Petrol Lawnmower - Deal ?

350 sqm but grass is tough (buffalo I think).

18V Ryobi only works if the grass is dry and not tall.

Any of these petrol ones a good deal ? Recommendation please:

36V Ryobi only works if the grass is dry and not tall.

    The new model works fine.

I have the brushless 36V Ryobi and it has no problem with my 350sq metre tall kikuyu lawns.

If I leave it too long then I need to mow it at position 5 and then do again at position 3.

OP mentioned the 18V Ryobi which is basically USELESS !
It has a very low run time and lawn must basically be mowed EVERY WEEK in the summer months.

Same with any 18V lawn mower. They don't have adequate run time nor the power.
And the cutting area is very narrow (30-33cm) so takes you much longer!

In fact I have found that the lawn must be mowed every week during the summer months with almost any battery lawn mower.
But 36V is more powerful and has longer run time.
Battery lawn mowers generally dont handle long thick grass at all. The simply cut out!

Petrol lawn mowers are far more powerful and will always do the job!
As long as you can start them.

But stay with a known brand as you wont find parts for these el-cheapo mowers from Woolworths….they are definitely NOT BARGAINS!
Anything with a Briggs and Stratton engine - parts and service are everywhere!

OP mentioned the 18V Ryobi which is basically USELESS !

Not for people in townhouses with very small sections of lawn.

Also, OPs comment was for the 36V and changed later…

        Time to change your username…

        • Sorry you are INCORRECT and my comment also applies to townhouses as well
Though OP made no mention of a townhouse.
In fact OP mentioned 350sqm of lawn and that quite a big lawn!.
In fact its the FULL size of an average inner city house block but wothout the house!!!!
So please read the post first and my post properly before making unappropraiae comments.

PS For a small town house lawn, most people just use the cheap push mowers or a whipper snipper,
Yes the run time of an 18V mower should suit a townhouse lawn
But if the lawn is left to grow for a couple of summer weeks, the 18V lawn mower wont cut it…Full stop!
It will just literally cut out!

          As OP correctly stated
"18V Ryobi only works if the grass is dry and not tall"

And Im reading THIS post as it was on the day which mentions the 18V mower.
Im made no mention of the 36V mower as it wasnt mentioned in the post.
But clearly the inference is that the 36V mower would be much better
So I am the one that knows anmd clearly you dont.

          Thank you

            Sorry you are INCORRECT

Nope, the post clearly said 36V when I commented and later the OP changed the text…

                • @jv: This one for stubborn ones only and those living in a backworld

    350m2 ?
Got to be a good neighbour and produce as much CO as possible with such good ww deals!

I would stay away from those no name brands you have mentioned as there will be no after sales support whatsoever. Buy a Ryobi or Ozito so as they are reliable brands and good support as you can go back to Bunnings for parts or replacement if there are issues. I have an Ozito with 4x 18v batteries which works well but if grass is overgrown, it struggles so get a petrol mower if you are not regular like me.

Wet, tall grass is a challenge for any mower, except maybe a slasher you tow with a tractor.
You might need to step up to one of the more powerful models, as bargain petrol mowers will deliver similar power to a 36v electric. Possibly the first option with a larger engine? But I’d be looking at a name brand, and possibly 2-stroke for higher power.

    • old victa 2 stroke has entered the chat

I have been tempted to pick one up just because they can scalp so well. Aussie lawns on YT uses his for lawn reno's

I used a toro zero turn while house sitting, grass wasnt even that long or that thick (couch + Weeds) I wasnt impressed.

Have you tried upgrading or sharpening the ryobi blades?

    • no … maybe i should do a servicing.

      Thank you !

      • You should, I have a 36v with dull blades and a suspect battery and an 18v with good blades and the whole experience is similar

i would be looking at Gumtree/Marketplace for a petrol mower

    i have a 36v ryobi
tall grass means - two passes. Once on height '5' and another on height '3'.
no biggie. Beats dealing with maintenance aspects of a petrol mower

    • This. More frequent mowing is better for the lawn anyway.

      • its not really the same, he is indicating he has to mow twice to get to his height which is completely different to someone mowing the same height twice a week which will produce a tighter "trained" height and maintaining "cut only 1/3rd of the leaf" rule

Its also easier overall if you mow twice a week as the engine/your legs doesnt have so much to labour through. E.g if I mow the front twice a week I never have to go over patches to properly mulch, its done in 15-20 mins. But if I only do it once a week, its 40-45 as I its overall harder and I have spots that need the mulch broken up to properly disperse or cut up finer. This is for buffalo and kik. couch would be different I think but it depends on thickness and maintained height etc, personal preference

        • If you dont let the grass get too long, you don't need two passes.

Have had a Victa petrol mower for over 20 years. Never failed. Mows buffalo fine.

    • thank you
this helps to narrow down search and to ignore the woolies sales.

      Mows buffalo fine.

      What about Bison?

      • That is what you say to your boy when you leave for work.

  • +1

As others have said, I'd stay away from anything from Woolworths. Go down to your local mower shop and look at their options.

I myself have a Masport 4-stroke with roughly the same size yard. Never had any issues with it, apart from filling the catcher (I don't mow often enough) and probably should have gone with a self-propelled variant; not that it's heavy, although sometimes manoeuvring it into tricky spots can be difficult (maybe I'm just getting old…), not that self-propelled would help with that anyway.

  • +2

A true aussie would get a 2 stroke Victa. There's nothing quite like the sound and smell of 2 stroke engine at full throttle in the morning.

    • +1

100% agree, 2 strokes make the boring task more exciting.

      • +1

Especially the real old scool ones with a throttle. Used to love making it backfire.

      • I had a ported 26cc line trimmer back in the day. High comp and expansion pipe off an rc car. Big bore kits only just came out but I didnt want torque, I wanted RPM!

I didnt have to do the edges for a couple of years, just invite a rev head friend over to show them and next thing I know im sitting down watching him do my edges.

It got accidentally chucked out in council collection, the plastic pull start gear failed (too much comp) and I had a metal one waiting for it but kinda forgot about it in the shed. Hopefully someone picked it up and got pleasantly surprised. If you can find an old grey ryobi 26cc they should have the jap zenoah which is the best of them, enough to have clones made in china. Most of the HPI baja aftermarket hot ups fit straight on, doesnt matter if it doesnt run or its rusted, race carbs, stroker/big bore kits, ceramic clutches, everything is available!

I have a couple of straight shafts and a bent shaft now, it makes me depressed in comparison but the straight shafts will chug pretty low without too much effort so theres that

If you want a petrol mower, grab a second hand honda from market place. They are regularly on sale.

    • +1

I'll strongly second that. My Honda is 15 years old and still going strong. You pay a bit more but you get a quality machine.

  • +2

    Honda buffalo all the way

  • +1

Wow - hard to find 3 worse mowers than those you shortlisted. I have no idea on what basis you could ever have thought they were worthwhile choices. With that in mind I suspect you're not overly savvy with mowers?

In which case, keep it simple and perhaps go with the Ozito 2 x18v steel deck recommended earlier - grab an extra set of 4aH batts when on sale. Read up on how to treat the batts for best lifespan.

Otherwise grab a 2nd hand Honda petrol mower via Gumtree/FB.

  • Never had an issue with my EGO on anything. Even overgrown (although I have to go slower)
