Boost in China

Does anyone know if you can access the Boost app whilst using local wifi in China?

I'm thinking of getting my wife a travel sim to cover her whole 1 month period in China but if there is anything wrong with the travel sim's connectivity, I'd like her to be able to purchase an international roaming pack still?

Thanks in advance! :-)

  • According to whirlpool, all works as normal there. You should be able to get the roaming pack. I'd get the roaming pack over local sim card due to inability to access google /gmail. IF your travel sim card is a roaming esim (eg. Nomad/airalo etc), then stick with it. I think you will be fine. Your boost will also still work (to receive/make call to australia or/ send/receve sms) using wifi.

    • Thanks for the reply though I'm not sure the WP response is relevant to my scenario.

I essentially want to know if we don't purchase an international roaming pack before leaving Australia, and if we only have access to local wifi in China (it can be at a hotel, cafe or my wife's parents' home), would the Boost app be blocked and we cannot use it to purchase an international roaming pack?

In theory, the SimsDirect or TravelKon travel esim I am planning on purchasing will work.

But my parents had an issue with Amaysim international roaming when in China late last year. They had three phones with them… one Oppo and two Nokia… the two Nokia phones didn't work with international roaming. I suspect they connected with a network that doesn't have an agreement in place with Amaysim. Regardless, my parent have no idea how to troubleshoot a phone if this happens and neither does my wife.

As such, if something similar happens with travel esim, we'd like to be able to use her Boost sim with international roaming in either her Fold 5 or her Huawei P30 Pro.

      • Once your phone is connected to a local mobile network (or wifi if it is at the airport, or anywhere as you stated), you should be able to operate boost app, even without roaming pack. It actually says this on the app and that is exactly what we did on the five countries we have been to last month. I was with boost.
My wife did have issue with Amaysim in the US (yeah, wierd, in a country like US, we couldnt get amaysim working properly, despite manually selecting T mobile), but were able to connect to the amaysim site to purchase pack when connected to airport wifi.
So, yes, it should work. And if this is any help, I have a friend visited China last month and was on Belong Network (which is also the same network as Telstra/Boost for that matter) and it worked with no issue at all.

        • Cheers.

Hopefully the Great Firewall of China hasn't changed to block the Boost app from working.

          • @Mugsy: Hi - I'm going to China in December, and have a phone on Boost - did you find out if you were able to access the Boost app while there?

  • You should be able to purchase roaming pack using dialing codes without WiFi access, it's a bit fiddly, think it starts with #111# and follow the prompts and you end up putting in credit card details.

  • Yes you can still get SMS and phone calls from AU and make calls to AU mobile number if you have Wi-Fi calling available. A lot of the services you are use to don't work. You might want to look into this post https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/816934 any overseas eSIM will be able to bypass the firewall.
