Car Servicing - Any Ideas to Save Money?

Recently got my 100K car servicing done at Mycar.

The oil/filter change was $100 and the labour was $300. I am not sure if there is a better way to save some $ here?

I am curious to hear, what others OzBargainers do for car servicing? I am also keen to keep service records as it might be handy during car sale.

Find a good local mechanic. Mycar isn't cheap.

    • +3

      Neither were kmart auto.

      • +1

Also I wouldnt service a trike there

    • +2

      mycar isnt expensive either.

One cannot comment of the cost of a service without knowing what was involved.

100K service is usually a major service so $300 sounds very cheap!
I dont know what OP expects???

      • I thought major service/100k involves replacement of timing belt

Yes i think 300 to supply and change timing belt was cheap?

        • +1

Depends on the vehicle. Some have timing chains that dont need replacing every 100k. $300 ain't gonna get you a timing belt change.

          • @Euphemistic: Ah thats right, i remember now timing chain on newer cars vs old timing belt

Yeah thats why i said cheap

    Got an EV.

Now i just wait for the car to tell me what to service; probably tyre rotation..

    • +3

most savings mainly eaten up by upfront purchase price (and massive depreciation if you care about resale).

*everyone's arrangement to purchase an EV and what EV they purchase may change the scenario…

      • Just curious any servicing requirements for EV

Like does the ev motor or battery need service

Also im trying to hold off buying ev atm, you reckon good idea to?

I just feel like the technology of the battery will improve very drastically over the next 10 or 20 years

And also that my current car was bought new and still low kms

        • each EV have different service requirements set my the manufacturer.
Tesla don't really have a service per say.
BYD have a km / year service.

The best thing for you to do is keep your car if it is reliable, of if you really want to change, change asap while resale prices in the 2nd hand market are high…

If you're planning to finance a new vehicle consider the tax benefits of a novated lease - this probably only works if your income is $100k + and vehicle purchase prices lowish - think BYD or GWM
Other than that cash is king.

          • @dasher86: Thanks for tip

Gonna run my current car to the ground i reckon

Also if i was to get an ev i would get a tesla rather than one of the chinese brands

Just curious how much a typical ev service costs?

    • +1

Do you enjoy lining up at the mall to charge your EV?

      • Why wouldn't he be charging at home?

        • +1

They'd have to pay for the electricity at home.

          • +1

            @Sammy2000: I don't.

My car and im sure others do something similiar is 100% exclusively charged by excess solar.

The only time it doesnt work is when i need to use the ducted aircon which means i need to choose between charging the car or cooling the house.

            • @adgnetworks: I would like a EV so much as I wfh and have 11 kw solar

              • @Franc-T: Why would you need a car in the first place?

                • @nushydude:

Why would you need a car in the first place?

Answer: because he wants one. Is there a law against owning a car?

        • If they live in an apartment, I guess their only hope is public charging.

      • +9

        'the mall' lol

Wait till oil goes on sale and repco/whereever and just get your mechanic to use that?
Ask around your area for a good private mechanic?
Learn to change oil and filter yourself?

    • +7

Wait till oil goes on sale and repco/whereever and just get your mechanic to use that?

i kind of remember a member here posting about how after he sourced own oil the mechanic charged more for labour haha
damn now i need to try and find the story

      • +2

Yeah this probably isn't the best idea in terms of buying your own oil and getting a mechanic to do it. Mechanics have their own liability/requirements, if you bring them an external part you can't then blame them for any issues arising from that part you provided. Either find a good local mechanic or learn to DIY.

        • +1

yep, racv refused to install a brand car new battery i purchased. they wouldnt even give me the tool to take off the nut which held the battery in place

      • Same with air conditioning if they provide their own unit.

        • ymmv but as long as a sparky installs it and you have an invoice for proof, most manufacturers have a service agent that will come out instead to fix issue if it really is a warranty drama

edit: i assume you mean normal ac in a house..and not..car ac?

          • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: Sorry, I meant air conditioning installers will charge more if you provide your own unit.

            • +2

@Some Human: Always better to get installed where you buy from that way if anything happens theres no blame game between installer and seller

        • i think there was another one, but this is very close to the one I had in mind!

          right idea

          Thanks!

edit i think it must have been this but maybe not, will keep looking later lol

  • +3

    wait for 200k

  • +1

I had this issue as well, local mechanic who WAS good, used to charge a whole ~200 flat somewhere mid COVID, now costs 400, and yep same as you ~300 in labour for an oil change. Ridiculous. I know inflation/cost of living has hit us all but come on..

    • +3

Everyone else is allowed massive pay increases though right ?

      • Where are these massive pay increases you're talking about? To the top 1% or?

        • Come on - last few years - some of the biggest increases for decades - most have jumped around for 20%-40%+ across a heap of industries - as long as not unskilled work or in public sector.

  • +1

Pull out your mobile and fiddle with cheap cars made with low salaries.
Walk back to Mycar and collect your new EV. No more costly oil changes, gearbox issues, diff noises.

And you are no longer supporting dirty oil money used for wars!

    • +1

      Tesla's still require
      * Automatic Transmission Fluid changes/top ups (for the drive system)
      * Brake Fluid changes/top ups
      * Multiple lubrication points for moving parts
So they are not entirely oil/lubricant free

      • -1

        Kmart does not sell Teslas.
But that dreamer with today I saw gen 5
Kmart sort of knows past tyres what to do so they tell me.
Smart ev drivers use 1 foot, pads last sort of 10 years?

  • +7

That's pretty cheap for a 100k service. Don't they also do things other than oil changes, like topping up all the oils/fluids, checking/rotating tyres, checking brake pads, checking filters, road test, etc.?

    • Yes. They have done those things as well. It is included as part of the labor

  • +2

A service is more than just oil + filter and off she goes. There is the pre service test drive, where aside from assessing customer concerns, the technician will be checking wipers/washers work as they should, listening to abnormal sounds from steering/suspension, engine/turbo noises. Is there hesitation on take off, is it torque converter auto, dual clutch, characteristic of the car or not, software updatable or a mechanical problem, wear and tear or not. How does the clutch feel, is the HVAC working as it should, fan speeds, getting cold? Little things like is the DST set right on the clock, sat nav updated, is the windscreen servicable, when was the last service on the sticker, does it need cam belt kit quoted, if chain what are the Ks and are chains an issue for this model, what are the wipers like, does the vehicle pull to one side, is it camber of the road or is it suspension related, what about tyre conditon/pressures. Squealing from the brakes from glazing or wear indicators, just some hard braking or inspecting pads carefully both sides too not just one as pads can wear unevenly, outside pad showing good, inner pad not servicable. That noise and drone in the car is it characteristic of the model, is it wheel bearing, which one how to test (safely on the road), or is it tyre noise, does it change with vehicle speed or not…….

The list goes on but this is just an indication of some of the work and expertise that goes into a service, and this is just the pre-service test drive, the car isn't even on the hoist yet for the actual inspection and service!

You are paying for the technician's expertise and know-how. The same way you pay a medical doctor $200/hr who "tells me to take some paracetamol, rest up and monitor for a few days". In hindsight, I could have gone to the chemist and got my own $2 panadol, but how would I have known that's all I really needed?

    • Yes, they have checked the windscreen, all sorts of filter check.. wheel alignment and balancing

      • Yes, they have checked the windscreen, all sorts of filter check.. wheel alignment and balancing

I really doubt that. BTW. You can't check a fuel filter or auto transmission filter.

    • You're dreaming if all/any of that happens at a service.

  • +2

I originally thought OP meant they took their $100,000 car for a service, but after reading comments (and rereading the post) realised it's 100,000 km service!!

If you ask for a service, I think $400 is pretty reasonable and I might even call it cheap.

If it's just an oil change, its probably on the pricey side but not unheard of. I'm sure if u find an honest local mechanic (…yes, they exist) you'll find better value

    • Sorry for the confusion.. It is not a $100K car. 100K service for Mazda Lol

  • +2

Depends what other items were listed on your logbook (and on the receipt) for the 100k service. If it was just oil and filter change I would be rightly outraged paying $400. If it is out of warranty I would invest in some Jack stands and floor Jack and DIY.

    • Wheel alignment and balancing, air filter

      • A wheel alignment costs about $90, from mycar actually, not sure if its a discounted price when you buy new tyres or a bit extra if you just wanted a WA on its own.

Then you mention WB as well, so yeah, its actually more than just a oil/filter change, otherwise if was only that, fook yeah, that a bit rich.

  • +2

Have you looked at the service booklet to know what all needs to be done?
Usually it give a list to be checked and a list that needs replacing like oil, filters etc.
    It varies between different services.
I usually also supply the oil as I can shop around or get it when its on sale.

    • Yes. Not sure if Mycar accept supplying oil and other things from outside?

  • +1

Recently got my 100K car servicing done at Mycar.

Is that the Aston Martin or the Maserati ?

    • Na mate.. it is a simple Mazda M5

      • +2

You paid too much for it then….

  • +1
    1. Be specific in exactly what you want done at the service and get a price before proceeding
    2. Do it yourself - but take it to a mechnic occasionally for their expert inspection if you dont get an annual rego check.
    3. Dont service it.
  • +3

In various comments above you mention this price included wheel alignment, balancing, air filter and a bunch of other checks. If that's the case, your $400 service actually isn't that bad. Best to list everything they did for the price rather than grouping everything under "labour". The 100k service usually involves quite a bit so will usually be more expensive.

    • +1

They might charge more labour to list out everything they did :D
