AmEx Velocity Card Travel Insurance

Recently signed up to the Amex Velocity card and brough plane ticket with it.

Just wonder from your experience, is it still better to buy a separate policy? One I used many times only charge around $100 with no excess. Claim process was really quick and paid claim even some docs not present.

I suspect the Amex one is free so won't be that relax on claims, just want to know is it good enough that I don't need to buy a separate one, or is it terrible? Thanks!!

  • I have the Platinum and my secondary cardholder rolled his camera off his shoulder, dropped it and his lens split in two. $1050 lens 6 months ago, they paid out $950 pretty hassle free, just provided the correct documentation upfront.

Though read through the PDS because the policy differs between cards, especially claim max amounts

    • Wait, we can claim accidental damage?
I'm going to accidentally run over my phone.

Depends what is on the PDS and what your requirements are.

    • Going to Spain so lost and stolen is a priority. Yet nothing super expensive, expensive will be the phones.

        Not medical/hospital cover?

          Not medical/hospital cover

of course I need that too. Just saying lost and stolen is the focus.

The one I use is quite good. When i claim an ER visit in Japan, two of the taxi trip I don't have receipt but they still pay it. The reply also mentioned they were suppose to get more documents but decided just to pay me.

  • I used and claimed delayed luggage expenses for me and my parents clothes on my CC complimentary travel insurance. Wasn't an Amex card, but there's a chance the actual insurer may be the same. I claimed about $850 worth without issues.

  • A bit of a delayed reply - the Amex card insurance is pretty good. But you must read the PDS for that card. Scroll down and choose your card here, and read the PDS and compare it to a paid one.
It's generally good cover - BUT with one big exception - if you have any pre-existing conditions there is no cover at all for those conditions. It's also a little vague as to whether they'd cover certain things on a cruise.
