Interesting Discounts Enticement Strategy from a Musical Instrument Website

After reading about a well reviewed & received mid range guitar I visited the vendor's website. Received a 15% discount voucher on what looked like a slightly jacked up price.
I added it to the cart, then changed my mind.

About 8 hours later I get a reminder email about the cart.

A couple of hours another email from the Thunder (get it?) shop site, this time with a 25% discount voucher. OK, sold me. Deal done.

The same shop sells a rather nice multi effects + looper + drum machine pedal. Put that in the cart and waited.

Got the reminder and 25% discount voucher just now.

There endeth the lesson.

Their metrics probably tell them that after eight hours an abandoned cart tends to stays abandoned forever.

This is very common and built into most e commerce platforms. Store just needs to enable it and set times and discounts.

  • This is something you should try with any website that your buying online from. Just add something to your cart and leave it there for a few hours. You may just get an email offering you a discount.

You can spot most shopify sites based on how they look, but if in doubt put the URL into builtwith.com

Plenty of e-commerce sites use marketing automation. In this case, cart abandonment triggers a voucher code after a certain period of time passes.

I do this all the time when I want to purchase something expensive, I leave it in the cart for 12-48 hours and see if it triggers a voucher.

  • Have had this a few times, including once when taking out an insurance policy
