[PC] Halo: The Master Chief Collection $12.48 @ Xbox ($14.98 @ Steam)

870

The link I provided is, I presume, a UWP game. If you, like me, prefer old fashioned Mfc programs, you can pay $2.48 more for the Steam version until 14 Feb.

The series that changed console gaming forever is on PC with six blockbuster games in one epic experience. Or, if you haven't used GamePass before you can pay $1 and hope to finish all of the games within a 'fortnite'.

Steam link: https://store.steampowered.com/app/976730/Halo_The_Master_Ch…

Campaign: Featuring Halo: Reach, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2: Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST Campaign, and Halo 4, The Master Chief Collection offers players their own exciting journey through the epic saga. Starting with the incredible bravery of Noble Six in Halo: Reach and ending with the rise of a new enemy in Halo 4, the Master Chief’s saga totals 67 campaign missions over six critically-acclaimed titles.

I mean great deal, helps with us all moving off the Xbox platform hey, in light of Xbox ditching exclusives :D

Doubt you'll see Halo on Playstation or Switch. Microsoft counts PC as their own platform and they sell through Steam only because most Steamheads only buy through Steam, they are a captive audience. 70% of a sale on Steam is worth more than 100% of a sale that isn't made at all.

Read the news today. Reports that Microsoft are looking to publish their catalogue of first-party games (Starfield, Halo, Hi-Fi Rush, Indiana Jones, etc) on PS5 and Switch. Reports have escalated from Twitter wars to writers from gaming publications now corroborating a shift in strategy for Microsoft to publishing their games on competitor's hardware.

Publishing more of the IP they own on other consoles is one thing, but Halo is another. I'll believe it when I see it.

        • +2

Ive only heard about sea of thieves, starfield and hi fi rush. Sources dont name drop halo either. Did you have another source i could check out that states it?

          • +2

@Darkvolcos: Halo: TMCC has mostly been only included within the 'insider' talk on Twitter and Discord, and hasn't been included in the reports by gaming publications just yet (perhaps they're all still fairly apprehensive about it too, despite the corroborations). Jez Corden of WindowCentral (who gets scoops) is one source who has mentioned TMCC. He could just be being cynical.

But if Starfield and Indiana Jones are now being included in these months-long leaked conversations about Xbox publishing its exclusives on competing consoles as of this morning, it's only one more step away from encompassing Forza, Gears and Halo - in my opinion.

            • +2

@Spawn Peak: Yeah i saw Jez's tweet, definitely read like a pessimist jab at xbox rather than any insight or scoop.

Love that SoT is likely coming and my dream is halo on ps5, but really don't see it happening at all with how much of a brand ambassador the franchise is compared to whats been rumoured.

              • +1

@Darkvolcos: I think you'll be surprised… Something that not pessimist Jez has said is that service games are more likely to be multi-platform. They almost need to be to survive in todays market. So I wouldn't be surprised if multiplayer halo (the F2P) component went multi-platform… Thats why I understood when SoT was talked about and even Hi-Fi Rush (its a niche audience) but when the banger you so called bought bethesda so that xbox had exclusives, Starfield is being talked about being multiplatform all bets are off.

            • -3

@Spawn Peak: Bethesda and Indiana Jones games have traditionally been published on all platforms that will run them. Halo has always been an xbox/PC thing. Well it was initially a Mac thing, but then it was a Microsoft platform thing. Hifi Rush was only just invented too, no love lost there by putting it on Playstation and Switch later.

              • +2

@AustriaBargain: Bethesda games were until Microsoft purchased them. Then the Xbox team said those games, like Starfield, would be exclusive (see Sarah Bond statement during Starfield announcement: https://xboxera.com/2024/02/04/exclusive-microsoft-plans-sta…)

So if they are already back-flipping on that decision for their biggest exclusive title less than a year after its release, as well as letting completely new Xbox IP like Hi-Fi Rush onto competitor platforms, then it's not hard to see them eventually going third-party and publishing Forza, Gears and Halo on PlayStation or Nintendo's next console.

It'll probably be at a large cost and delayed release, but I honestly wouldn't believe anything Microsoft says at this point regarding exclusive titles. I think they're just transitioning into a different business model altogether (cloud-based, play across all possible devices, etc).

As someone who grew up playing Halo 1 and now only has a PS5. Good! I can't wait!

How does it matter to MS if people are playing on XBOX or PC?

      • +2

The talk online is about how it affects gamers mostly.

      • +1

The theory is without exclusives people will buy the console with exclusives eg PlayStation… Xbox has already had a hard time getting third party to make games for Xbox due to its much smaller user base. If they can’t keep numbers up with no third party support the console would die and you be left with them essentially being entirely a third party dev. Peoples Xbox digital libraries that they thought they’d have for life would eventually be gone as the hardware dies. That’s the theory… personally I’m ok with Xbox games being on PC but whilst PlayStation has exclusives Xbox needs exclusives.

        • That it true if they release games on PS. But shouldnt matter if its PC or XBOX? There is no much profit from selling the harware itself, its probably selling games is where they make money.

  • +2

    Note if bought on steam:

In your steam library, Right click on the game > properties > DLC > tick all that apply. I would suggest ticking all Multiplayer packages at least. Otherwise you won’t be able to join some servers.

Note that ATL on Steam has been $12.48 in the past.

    • +1

It's because there was a regional price increase but it was the same 75% off

  • So when I look at it.

XBOX - $14.98 on the XBOX.
    PC- $12.98 via link above.

    Weird.

    • Unfortunately it's not a play anywhere title so you have to purchase twice if you want it on Xbox and PC.

I booted up Halo 2 again recently and damn I missed the grapple-hook and ledge climbing when going back to these from Infinite. I wish Infinite wasn't so tied to the success or failure of MP. I loved the campaign and gameplay loop.

  • The xbox link says it also playable on PC

Does this mean if I buy it on the xbox store I can play both on the xbox and my PC ?

Word of advice to anyone thinking about buying this for co-op campaign: don't.

There seems to be no code at all for lag compensation for co-op campaign.

The result is that anyone other than the host will experience extreme input lag. I'm talking about waiting several seconds for your character to crouch after pressing your crouch key. Every single action is significantly delayed, including shooting, basic movement, etc. It's absolutely awful.

This happens no matter how good everyone's internet is. Having good bandwidth or latency may alleviate it slightly, but the problem will still persist in some form.

This is not some elite snobbery about input lag that happens in competitive shooters. This will be noticeable to everyone, no matter how bad your reflexes or how unobservant you are.

On top of that, sometimes the game just straight up disconnects everyone because it's so unstable.

This has persisted for years. 343 claims that solving the issue will require a major refactor of large parts of all the games. Given that Halo MCC is just a loss leader for the flagship Halo title, they are unlikely to ever be granted the resources for a major refactor for something that cannot be sold as DLC or directly generate revenue in some way.

    https://www.google.com/search?q=halo+mcc+input+lag+site:www.…

Note how the Reddit posts all come from different people and go back years.

On the other hand, if you want to buy it just for some solo nostalgia, go for it.

    • Agreed with the co-op lag. Tried a firefight match with a friend in America, we had previously played other co op games (deep rock galactic) without any real issues, but halo was absolutely unplayable.

As you say, multiple seconds of lag before any of my inputs registered.

      • Firefight? I thought that was on dedicated servers.

Or are you referring to private firefight lobbies? I think those are on the host's machine.

You should be able to queue with your American friend in public matchmaking for firefight. You'll be matched on servers in Asia, USA, etc, with strangers who waste all the team lives and don't pull their weight, but at least it should be somewhat playable.

    • Co-op works fine playing on a local network though (or it does for us at least).

We choose LAN instead of Xbox Live in the settings, so maybe xbl is the issue.

Proper split-screen co-op would have been better than LAN co-op.

But it works fine, we've played through Halo 1 and 2, one mission at a time, with only one or two disconnects.

      • So if you have two different Xbox consoles in the same house and each one has its own purchased copy of Halo MCC installed, you can play this over local LAN without needing Xbox Live/Gamepass?

I hate playing split screen as eyes are getting to old to see the squished down UI, but happy to co-op with my son on our own TVs.

If this is possible, I'll purchase immediately.

        • This deal is for the PC version. That's what I used.

I don't know if it's possible on the Xbox version or not.

          • +1

@GandalfTheCheap: The deal is on both, just $2.50 difference between the platforms.

That's ok, I'll test it another way.

    • That's a real shame considering the Halo series is known to have pretty decent co-op through its campaigns. I purchased this last time it was on sale this cheap. Luckily my bro didn't buy this to play co-op with me.

Maybe I should consider Gears 5 instead for my co-op fix… also $12.48… but only good for 2 player co-op (third player gets to be a robot):

      https://butwhytho.net/2019/09/gears-5-proves-why-we-need-co-…

  • Great if you wanted to replay all the campaigns. Easily 40h worth for just $12. Got it last time when it went on sale.

Gfx in halo reach, 1 and 2 have been upgraded. With halo 3 staying the same but made for ultra wide now.

    • For me, it's to experience the campaigns for the first time.

Though I'm still mainly playing Diablo 3 seasons… running out of things I want to do though so maybe I should fire up Halo again.

Brought this awhile ago. You can toggle OG graphics and the newer lighting system graphics if you want, it's well done, I've hardly played it but it's nice to come back to and for the price, it's a must have.

  • I keep seeing "master CHEF" collection… :s

  • its a good collection i bought it only steam a long time ago, still haven't bothered to play through it lol. Alot of people didnt' realized the orginal Halo and Halo 2 were on PC cd rom back in the day.
