Reliable Laser Mono Printer with Third-Party Cartridge Availability?

Hi all, looking for a low-volume laser printer for home for miscellaneous use when I'm not in at work. Brother HL-L2445DW looked like a winner @ $100 but no longer readily available. I've read the newer models (e.g. Brother HL-L2400DW @ $160) has a chip on the cartridges making generic cartridge use challenging. I don't really want to mess around transplanting chips, etc.

It would ideally work on a Wi-Fi 5ghz network as I have a modern mesh network (I supposed I could set up a guest 2.4ghz network in a pinch). Wi-Fi printing in general should be reliable. Thanks for any tips!

Reliable Laser Mono Printer with Third-Party Cartridge Availability?

    an old model Brother…

I have a HL-1210W and the cartridges cost virtually nothing…

    edit:

Looks like OW still sell them

Toners on ebay are about 2 for $20, or 5 for $40

    PS

    It ain't heavy…

    • Thanks! I assume I'll be forgoing Wi-Fi 5ghz capability though

Can't you just run dual-band? Switch to 2.4 to add the printer, then leave it at dual-band?

      • probably

Modern mesh network should be dual band 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz.

It is not modern networks where you have a problem. My uncle had the printer on 2.4ghz and ipad on 5Ghz and wondering why it doesn't turn up.

My old 2.4Ghz printer seems fine when I try to print from 5Ghz connection.

That's probably because of a network configuration most likely. Possibly different VLANs setup for each network, rather than being on 1.

Depends entirely on the network configuration.

  • Mine is HL-L2305W - upgraded from HL-2142 - the former I bought new at $100 the later I bought second hand at $20, I still kept the later as backup printer - seems I never have to. I used to print most of the time customer orders two A4 in one - thus A5 prints but now I made my order list in Google Keep so I do not have to print as much. Printing shipment labels with the feeder is really good. I used to print from the bottom tray but if not careful it can stuck, but via feeder is almost never stuck. I guess it is the same in most of this Brother printers.

I saw one Brother printer in a GP office where the feeder can be fed multiple pages at once rather than one by one - but I worry on the unknown - now it should be like op suggest tricky in using third party toners/drums.
