Rights under ACL for Flight Cancelled Two Hours before Departure?

I was flying with REX from Brisbane to Adelaide for the weekend for my brother's wedding the next day.

They cancelled the flight 2 hours before departure. The only flight they could get me on was the next day with Rex as they “don’t rebook with other airlines”.

I had to purchase a flight at increased cost to get me to my destination on time.

Would I be able to claim the fair difference under ACL?

    travel insurance?

Most don't cover cancellations whilst you're still in your home city.

No. Best you can get is a refund of the ticket cost of the canceled flight, you have no rights to seek compensation for any extra cost involved in booking with another airline.

      • My wife works at the same company as him (massive company). He's been getting so much crap since that aired.
        And rightfully so.

No. You can only claim for a refund…

There has never been a rule that a company would pay for you to go to a competitor if they can't give you what you paid for.

You were offered the best possible option Rex had so I don't think anyone will side with you.

  • no, max damages the cost of the airline.

If you have a corporate agreement, that might be different. lmk if you have a contract.

Another reason why Australia needs a air travel rights scheme like the EU does.
Even the US has better flying rights than we do.
Why isn't the government acting??? Because they are too busy protecting QANTAS.

Really? I see Youtube videos of people getting kicked out of flights all the time due to over booking.

Yes - and they are entitled to compensation.
        https://www.transportation.gov/individuals/aviation-consumer…
In this case OP would get 400% of his fare as compensation.

        • 400% of his fare as compensation.

Jetstar would go bankrupt in no time…

          • @jv: If the compensation plan actually had teeth Jetstar would be much slower to cancel…
At the moment they have no reason to go ahead with any flight that is of questionable profitability. This would shake up their cost benefit analysis pretty quick.

        corruption, plain and simple.

  • You should have rang your bro:

Master Dino thinks wedding is a scam!

  • I wonder how often Rex cancels flights. I would never go with a small carrier for important events.

Would jetstar put you on a Qantas flight? Anyone knows?

I wonder how often Rex cancels flights.

"Rex, Australia’s largest independent regional and domestic airline, has secured the coveted title of Australia’s number one airline for reliability and punctuality in 2023.

      • How many other independent regional and domestic airlines are there though? I thought it was just Rex?

          There's also Bonza

          • @QF99: Thanks cobber.

    • Jetstar had put me on a Qantas flight (flying domestically between Sydney and Brisbane) in the past, but that was about 5 years ago so no clue if they still do that

Fly Mickey Mouse airlines and receive Micky Mouse service.

    • They were the most reliable airline in 2023

  • Interstate flight inconvenience insurance on your credit card?

  • Short answer: no

Long answer: No. read the t&c’s

"If the consumer had to book a new flight with another airline because the airline they had originally booked with had no reasonable replacement flights, they may have a right to reimbursement from the original airline for the cost of that flight."

I'll see how I go with ACL. I do have Insurance from a credit card so ultimately I'll be made whole regardless.
