I'm assuming it's possible to sign a PDF form with one of these functions?

    • +1

      Doesn't look like it.

    • +6

Acrobat reader will allow you to fill and sign forms for free

      • +1

Only in the app? My friends PC has Adobe PDF installed but it's only a reader, you have to subscribe to be able to edit or fill in any PDFs

        • +1

I have the Adobe reader and I can sign and insert text into it without subscribing.

        • +1

Look for the Fill & Sign option in Acrobat reader

  • +2

    Not free for me

    • Maybe come back to Oz from Turkey/Argentina/India or wherever you are now?

  • +11

Why are apps that can edit pdfs so hard to come by?

This one seems to everything but edit.

    • Maybe Adobe has that locked down

      • +6

        Adobe don't own PDF format.

    • +2

      adobe charges hefty licensing fees

      • +5

Adobe doesn't own the PDF format.

    • +15

      Install LibreOffice
      Import the PDF and edit.

      Or another
      Xournal for annotation.

Or Stirling PDF (similar to Accumulator ) but Free. It's great if you have a synology.
      Merge/split/rotate/crop/adjust colours/remove password and more.

      • i just installed this a few days ago. stirling pdf on Synology .

    • There are a few apps on Linux that can do all this plus more…. But that is the only issues, you can create a live USB for specific apps and boot through USB to utilise a lot of potential that way.

    • +1

because usually you create a document and then convert/save to PDF.

I've tried various PDF editing apps over the years and most are rubbish. Adobe has always been the best by a country mile. So look for cheap Adobe subscription..like the Lebanese one
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/783297

    • I think it's because the way data is structured in the pdf format, it becomes technically too hard to write a program that can edit it, especially dealing with existing text.

      • Sometimes it's called OCR. It's a premium feature so a lot of developers can make easy money off it. If a big player like Adobe was to incorporate it for free everyone else would follow suit. Obviously they won't.

    • +4

Because by design it's not a format made to be edited. It's for document distribution.

  • +1

you just use a web form to pdf to word, etc

  • +32

Accumulator seems like a fitting name for something I'll install and likely never use.

  • Good find, thanks OP.

  • Does it convert tiff—-> pdf?

  • Can anyone recommend free PC software that lets you sign and edit PDFs

PDF X-Change Editor does what all the free apps do - open read sign pdfs
Also allows some editing in the free version e.g. click to edit a typo etc.
If you exceed the free version it applies a watermark
      Trusted company and highly recommend

PDFgear seems quite useable and has all the features
Fairly new and not quite as user friendly but free
Can't recommend as it seems to good to be true - if it's free then you are the product
Actually it has some pretty trusted reviews - give it a go
Available for Win Mac and iOS with ANdroid coming
      https://www.pdfgear.com/

Otherwise Acrobat (expensive - or difficult to geo-shop) or Nitro (not quite as expensive) are the only ones I would pay for

      • Worth paying for the proper version if you use it daily in a professional environment. The extra tools are great and save time (editing, marking up, splitting/joining/extracting and other tools), even use the right click and export tables to excel etc. a watermark is useless.

Before that I've used PDFill which doesn't the basic stuff (combine, convert etc).

  • anyone know a good app that converts images (as in .jpg or .png files, not a camera picture live) to text reliably and consistently ??
currently using this, below which is okay but limited to 10 images at a time (which is super annoying)

    https://ifimageediting.com/

  • Thanks OP may test it out. 158 upvotes it must be decent.

PDF-XChange Editor is awesome for PC, sick of Adobe after 20 years.
Not free not expensive and worth it though.

Had a quick look seems they don't have an Android app/plugin.

    • +1

Yes PDF-XChange Editor works well. I use a cracked version found on torrents, I'm not interested in paying annual fees. If they had a stand alone product I could buy as a one off then I'd give them my money.

      • +1

        That's fair 😉.
Work pays so got it at home too but forget how much.
Probably not more than$100 but could be a good tax deduction and Adobe is annoying af.

      • +2

FYI: PDF Xchange Editor Personal costs US$56 outright and isn't subscription based. It comes with 12 months maintenance and one can pay for longer (2 years, 3years etc) if interested for a small additional fee.

About Maintenance: When that expires: This does not mean that your current licensed products will cease to function or that the license will expire. Your license will work in perpetuity for any version of the product released during your term of active maintenance.

Just means you no longer get upgrades to latest version. Great product and well worth the $$.
