    officeworks selling controllers that's new

What's everyone's take on these controllers?

I got one a few weeks ago and it chews through batteries like crazy. My regular Eneloops barely lasted a day, and it uses battery power even when it and XSX is switched off!

I had to buy the Play & Charge kit so that I could play without swapping batteries every day or taking out the batteries during dinner time and overnight.

regular AA batteries last at least a few days of gameplay in my experience, but I'm not using it constantly

    • +1

Batteries last as long as the previous gens for me. It's the plastic on these that I hate, feels like cheap third party crap. Some of the special editions are nicer (the starfield one was nice and smooth)

    • Definitely chews through batteries but that might just be normal, definitely need the rechargeable batteries and only should come standard as it does with Sony but is what it is

      • +1

Yeah. I paid a little extra and got the red one for $69, and the play & charge kit cost $30, so it ended up costing $100 all up, which was not I was planning on. I wished that MSFT still sold the Xbox One controllers as they worked fine.

        • Yeah definitely need to factor in the costs otherwise you'll use $30 worth of batteries in a month easily if you play enough. I actually had my old Xbox One controller that I bought 2nd hand from EB games but was basically perfect condition when I bought it and had no issues, sold it about a month ago for $60 with the USB connector and still ran perfectly fine no signs of wear and no stick drift either. Had a lot of interest in it and everyone had the same issue with their controllers having stick drift.

    • Found the battery life roughly the same as the previous gen one (for XBox One S|X), but found this model of controllers not as reliable. The A button on mine no longer works 100% (have to press harder than usual nowadays). Still had an old controller I kept from XBox One S|X days, the buttons still work normally.

      • That's weird. Previous Xbox One controllers would last weeks on the Eneloops, whereas these new XSX controllers last a day at the most. A friend donated an old XSX controller with stick drift to me, and that too chewed through batteries like mad. Googling around, I'm not alone in this and battery life seems to be a major issue.

Still have no idea why it drains the batteries even when it is switched off.

        • these new XSX controllers last a day at the most

Mine one lasts longer, but I cannot play games for 24 hours non stop. I don't find the old X1S|X controller's battery life that great. I can't game every day (other than login at least once a day to get the dumb weekly reward points where you need to launch the app on 3 different days in a week). Do game a bit on the weekends, mine last weeks.

Was overseas for about 3 weeks last December, came back, controller still works fine with the same set of batteries (did not take batteries out of the controller).

    • I got one a few weeks ago and it chews through batteries like crazy.

Did you use it whole day?

      • 12 hours maybe, not the entire day.

    • +1

There's something clearly wrong with either your batteries or controller because my last at least 35-40 hours on Eneloops, same thing with the elite controller with the built in battery.

      • Yeah, it's weird. I tried 2 different XSX controllers and they both chew through batteries. Online search also says many others are seeing the same thing.

I think my Eneloops are fine, the charger indicates they are pretty good and hold 1900+ mah

    • I've been using wireless Microsoft controllers for nearly 20 years now and haven't noticed any significant decrease in battery life. Always used rechargeable batteries and feel like I get a couple of weeks play every time. Have you tried updating the firmware on these new controllers? Wouldn't think it would do much but may help

  • Batteries always been fine for me with envelope. I have 4 of these controllers and had a left thumb stick go bad after just over 1 years of use. It was a (profanity) pain contacting Microsoft support but they did eventually replace it for free.

will this work with a PC?

    • Yes, like all other xbox controllers since the 360, you can connect it using Bluetooth or a USB cord.
Personally I'd opt for the USB connector as I found the Bluetooth connection flaky, but YMMV

      • Or the dedicated wireless adapter that Microsoft sells (or used to sell? IDK), but I personally found Bluetooth to work just fine

      • Only the latest (Series) Xbox controllers have bluetooth, not the previous gen. One had to buy the official USB dongle for wireless connectivity to PC in the past.

        • Yes, I think you're right. I don't think I ever tried connecting the others wirelessly (my PCs didn't have bluetooth until recently)

      • Only wired 360 version works.
I've been desperately trying to find one recently at a reasonable price and they just don't seem to exist! There's hundreds of wireless ones dirt cheap, but you can't use them with PC (without the proprietary dongle).

        • what's a reasonable price? I swear the 360 USB ones were about $25

          • @smalltime0: $25 is what I want to spend.
But people are selling them used on eBay for like 70 (if you can find them).

    • If you want audio through the headphone jack you need to connect it via USB-C cable I think.

      • There is a 3.5mm jack on the controller. Just re-tested it, audio out of it works fine.

        • On Bluetooth? Nice! I haven't played PC games in a while. Time to dust off the controller.

  • hmmm might get one for the quest 3 for xbox live. hehe

  • Just what I need, another controller to lose at FIFA with!

  • 66 + 29 for the xbox rechargeable pack 95 bucks not bad.

Please note, I've purchased one of these from Amazon recently and it was clearly a used controller.

There were little hairs on the controller, including hairs in the battery compartment, as well as lint.

Anyone who has opened one of these brand new before knows what a new controller feels like. Definitely not new.

Nothing on the listing mentions it being a refurb but it certainly looked like one. Reading through the comments found that I was not the only one with this experience. Ended up returning it to Amazon for a refund and buying it elsewhere.

Would recommend opting for a price match at Officeworks as OP suggests.

    • Normally, these are sealed. Did you receive one that's not sealed or it was, but once you opened it, it had an old controller inside?

Did you return it to Amazon to get a full refund or a brand new replacement?

      • The packaging had a seal on it, which is what completely threw me off. I cracked the seal open only to be surprised by the contents. I still have close up photos of the hairy controller which I sent to Amazon along with my complaint.

I returned it to Amazon and opted for a refund. Couldn't be bothered wasting time with another controller which could potentially arrive in the same state, given other reviews complained of this also.

    • That's weird. Mine I got around Xmas time was definitely brand new.

      • They must have mixed stock and only the unlucky few cop the dodgy controllers. I definitely wasn't the only one, going off the reviews.

        • I got the red ones, so not the standard all black, or all white, which may be the reason why I dodged that bullet.

          • @GreenLego: Funny you say that, because I got the candy apple red one specifically.

Will this work on my submarine?

    • +3

Only on submersibles. Not a submarine.

  • Officeworks Boxhill REFUSE to price beat this morning as model on their website is QAT-00003 while on Amazon is QAT-00006…

    • That is next level stupid.
I could understand it being the other way 'round (i.e. we have the newer revision, that's someone offloading excess).

      • So how would you answer that?
