Alright.

Got this TP-Link Mesh WiFi system. Mesh WiFi, eh? Sounds like something you'd find in a spider's web, but apparently it's for your internet.

Supposedly, it's meant to spread your WiFi signal all over your house like butter on toast. No more dead zones or weak connections in the attic. But let's not get too excited. It's not gonna turn your house into a WiFi paradise overnight. And it's TP-Link, so it's probably reliable. I mean, they wouldn't put their name on something that's gonna conk out on you every five minutes. At least, I hope not.

The ethernet port on it, right. It's cruising at 100 megabits per second. Now, that's not bad, but most routers out there are flaunting those flashy 1 gigabit per second speeds. It's like comparing a snail to a Ferrari, if you catch my drift. So, keep that in mind before you go zooming into the digital highway with this Deco E4.

So, if you're in need of a WiFi boost and you're willing to shell out a bit of cash for it, this TP-Link Mesh WiFi system might just do the trick. Just don't expect it to make your internet speeds faster than the speed of light. It's good, but it's not magic.

Just be aware that the ethernet port on this Deco E4 is only 100Mbps. Most routers have 1Gbps.

Even if your NBN is 100Mbit or lower it could be worth having the higher speed if you transfer files on your LAN etc.

      100Mbps

Last time I had such device was before 2010 :O

      • Some TVs and AV Receivers still come with 100Mb ports today.

    • M4 version has Gbit ports. Not sure if there is a bargain soon though.

  • Does anyone know how are the parental controls on these things like ?

      Hi Yeah,

      I have the M5 deco,

Have a large household can setup profiles for the kids, set timers and give the adults high priority on the network so your connection doesn't slow when the kids are streaming video.

      • Hey I have m5 too. To make use of this do I need to set them up as WiFi router, and switch my Archer vr2100 to modem bridge mode? For the last year I’ve had my m5s set up as AP and wonder if I might be under utilising them.

I have everything set as wifi router as default, run the main devices on phones tablets on 5ghz and IOT (wifi plugs) on and other non priority devices 2.4ghz.

for those wanting to use Airlink, or steam link or even virtual desktop for your quest 2 or 3 these mesh kits are crap for that. You need a dedicated ap for your quest 2 or 3 Mesh kits introduce too much latency.

    • oh really… i was considering getting an AX mesh kit for my quest 3… better off with just a decent router?

      • yeah I bought a Asus AP they seem to do well with the quest 3. over wifi 6

        • What did you buy? Interested for my quest 2

          • +1

@justtoreply: I bought it during the black friday sales it was like 80 bucks from jb hifi when I got it. the it was the Asus AX1800 dual band RT-AX54HP but I use it as just an Access point I have it connected to my router which has its own wifi network. the only device that is connected to that AP is just one my quest 3.

    • yo you read my mind before i could even ask the question

    • While this is true, no doubt, if you're using your Quest near the primary router you can lock it to that AP and remove any chance of adding hop latency, also, if your secondary mesh nodes are connected via Ethernet the latency should be tolerable.

I'm using a 6E deco in a similar fashion to connect to Quest.

    Did chatty G write this?

    • what I think everytime

    • I think he uses ChatGPT to write in the style of Karl… Poorly.

  • If I wanted just a wifi range extender, would these be an overkill?

    • +5

Range extenders kinda suck IMO. Mesh is all round better for a number of reasons.

    • +3

I'd go mesh like this, it will work waaay better than a wifi extender, and future proof you too. There is a 2 pack available for $92.

  • get a Netgear WAX206, good speed (I got 250 Mbps NBN and I am getting around 270 Mbps all the time) and coverage over WIFI AX, typically costs around $100, I got mine from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/809896

Wifi 5, hold, they going on clearance price shortly.

  • I had these, they worked fine but the 100mbps ports bottleneck eventually got in the way. I'd recommend getting S4 or M4 with gigabit ports, doesn't cost much more.

  • This or Google nest wifi (plenty new around Facebook) for about $200?

    • I'd say Nest will be much better than these but are they price comparable? Personally I'd go with a better Deco mesh system that's in the same price range as the Nest.

  • I got this. It works well. Killer value for money.

Not if you’re on FFTN or FFTB you may need to keep a modem.
