how is this a deal when you just pointed it out its cheaper at PCCG? you can pick up at PCCG as well

    • +1

Not everyone lives close to PCCG. I guess it's just cheaper for those who live near scorptec

      • Not everyone lives close to PCCG.

that applies to any deal that is in-store though…

    • I was just trying to point out both, cos it might be cheaper at Scorptec for some people, and cheaper at PCCG for others…if you don't want the deal, don't use it ;)

I have no idea if this is a good price on this model or not, but the whole concept of a "wireless NAS" is pretty flawed.

You'd only use such a thing in a space that was using Wireless devices - but if that's the case then you'd already HAVE a wireless router sitting there to do the file sharing between machines, and to provide internet access.

Therefore, you get the exact same result by plugging a standard NAS into the back of your existing wireless router. This would save you at least $100, or even $150 off the price of this kind of device.

Yeah, this is a reasonable home-use NAS (1.6MHz CPU), and a fair price compared to the (more powerful) DS213j at $329, but it's not a bargain compared to the only slightly less powerful DS212j at $219.

So do you REALLY need a wireless one? Could you spend $320 on a different brand and get something with more grunt or features or HDD slots? Would you better paying $219 for the 212j and then spend the $100 difference on a 2TB hard drive? Those are the questions….

    • To challenge the 'flawed' concept of a wireless NAS…

Yeah and what about those PCI cards that give your PC wireless capabilities! Similarly, you'd only be able to use it if you have a wireless router just sitting there ready to do everything, so why not just plug it into the back of that and save yourself some money.

Taking the piss a little :), but in reality I think the main point of a wireless NAS is that you can put it somewhere completely hidden from view as long as there is a powerpoint.

In general I agree with your point, as for me the performance of a wireless NAS hidden behind 4 walls does not sound appealing and detrimental to the whole purpose of the device.

or in a garage or something in case of fire, your data has a better chance of being safe…

      • Yeah and what about those PCI cards that give your PC wireless capabilities!

LOL - that's a different thing. A NAS is the type of device that should be hidden in the same location as all the other "ugly stuff" like Modem and Router.

My Media NAS lives on a shelf below the shelf that holds the modem.

It's bad enough streaming high bitrate 720p and most 1080p via a "proper" powerful WiFi modem with large antennas. Imagine how terrible it'd be streaming from the inbuilt wireless inside a NAS aghhh

There are some things that are infinitely better as wired Ethernet… a NAS, which is effectively a server, is one of them.

  • I agree with Ilama

I can't see how the wireless is more useful as the idea of NAS is to store large files. DS212j or DS213j would be more suitable for the SMB offices.
