770

As seen on MyDealZ

Back again with another epic freebie! Tested again to ensure that it works, so follow along below!

Step 1:

1a) Sign up for a free Blue Star Neighbourhood Account here and select "Civilian Supporter" as your affiliation.
1b) Press submit and you'll be redirected to a screen that looks like this, with the green success message across the top.
1c) After successfully viewing the message in the previous step, click here, entering the email you used for the signup process and clicking "Send Password Link". You should then see this message
1d) Check your email to find this message. Follow the steps to reset your password. Read the terms and conditions and accept. You should end at a screen like this.

Step 1 is fairly easy and straight forward, follow along for step 2, which is also fairly easy!!

Step 2:

This step can be completed now, in advance of completing step 3

2a)After completing step 1d as above, you should be on this screen here. Scroll down to find this menu. Press the "Member Perks" button. You should appear here.
2b) Scroll down to find the Headspace option and press "Get Relaxed". You'll be redirected to this screen here. IMPORTANT: CREATE A NEW HEADSPACE ACCOUNT. If you have an existing account, DO NOT use it. Enter your details in here, ensuring you use the same email that you used when signing up in step 1a.
2c) You'll then be redirected to this screen.

Now we must wait for about 4-7 days. When you try to enter your email used for the signup process in step 1a, you'll receive a message like this. When testing my account only took 4 days before I could complete the next step, however, users on MyDealZ have reported needing to wait up to a week. You will not receive any indication as to your ability to now complete the next step, however, try after 4 days and each day thereafter.

However, read on to find out what to do when you receive the green success message. Apologies that this section was shot on my iPhone.

Step 3:
3a) After waiting 4-7 days and entering your email, you'll eventually see this message. Check your emails (this one ended up in my "Promotions" tab so check everywhere), and find this email and press the "Activate" link. You'll see a screen like this. Press next and then you'll be redirected to the Headspace homepage.

Check your Headspace subscription page and you'll see you've got it for just under a year!

Enjoy!

Ethical Disclaimer

This service is exclusively intended for military and ex-military personnel.

Founded in 2009 by military spouses with you in mind, we empower military families to thrive by connecting them with their civilian neighbors - both people and organizations - to create strong communities of support.

However, given the site has options for civilian supporters, this lead me to pursuing the deal. Before claiming the deal, please consider the targeted audience and whether or not you think you should claim. As a disclaimer and for ethical purposes, I made a $50 donation before continuing to use this deal. If you wish to do the same, you can do so here

Great effort in putting this together. Thanks OP!

Thanks for the ethical discussion, it's too often ignored.

Personally I think this delves a little too far into an ethically grey area, even with the donation. The charity is clearly aimed at American military personnel and their families, and is presumably offering them free/low cost mental health and wellbeing products to help them manage the traumas of conflict or deployment away from their loved ones. I'm sure some Ozbargainers will make donations, but it's more likely that most users will simply sign up and take the Headspace subscription without any contribution.

I'm unsure what the exact rules are here, but even if it's fine to keep up with the existing ethical caveats, I'd recommend that anyone thinking of signing up make a donation close to the cost of the 12 month subscription (AUD$91.99). Otherwise you're taking for yourself something that's targeted at a specific group of vulnerable people.

A donation would be great and I'm totally for it. But this is an app-subscription that doesn't really cost Headspace or Blue Star any money nor is it taking resources away from said vulnerable people who would miss out if others claimed it.

Edit: Headspace has location based pricing, it's as cheap as A$10 per year if you're in India and 9x the cost here. Headspace will still end up making money through membership renewals and if anything, this is is a very low cost marketing channel for them to "advertise" in.

      • I would've thought (based on no research whatsover) that blue star would be paying headspace per user signed up through this method, so if blue star get ozbargained, then there's a possibility that they rescind this offer based on financial reasons

I work in channel marketing and if it was me running Headspace, I'd be offering my services to charities for free and making money off of the lifetime value that a user will stay a Headspace customer. Headspace isn't in the business of charity and what they're doing is akin to essentially buying into a relevant audience base for very little cost.

User acquisition costs can be as high as $25-$30 per user (advertising, re-advertising and nurturing prospects to become paying customers). Your incremental marginal cost of onboarding a free user through a charity is next to $0 as it does not cost you any money to acquire them (you're potentially only foregoing the 1st year revenue), but a user may stay a paying customer after using the app for one year (assuming they see value in it) and any revenue from then on is just icing on a cake. Plus, the likelihood of this crowd becoming paying customers is very high as they are a highly relevant audience for an app like Headspace, so conversion rates might be orders of magnitude higher than some being advertised to on say Facebook.

Offering your app for free does two things:
          - helps you avoid expensive acquisition costs (brings your total marketing costs down) while targeting your service to a very engaged and highly relevant audience
          - helps build social credit and good standing as you're seen in a positive light by giving stuff to people who need it for free.

          • @d3al: Appreciate your professional input - some great insights.

I should add that the app is free for 10 lessons on the basics meditation after which you can stay or go. Headspace paid subscriptions also work on a one for one commitment where for every paying customer they give away another full subscition to someone in need.

Certainly a grey area and hey if you find yourself using it (and try to stick at it) I'm sure you'll pay for it at somepoint cause its very worthwhile.

      • I haven't heard of Headspace via India being AUD 10 per year. Upon searching OZB I found it via this link (approximately $26 per year), which is excellent BTW. Anyway, thanks for bringing this to my attention, much appreciated.

        • I remember it being around ~$10 a few years ago (I think that's what I paid based off an OzB deal, but that's going back 3 or 4 years ago)

So suddenly OB has a conscience?? Why? Because they are soldiers? Why do they have a special status in your mind?

        • +4

I disagree. They sign up because they are sold honour. They are manipulated because they are often young and inexperienced. Then due to politics (like Ukraine - Russia) they get sent out to kill and often develop really ugly coping mechanisms. When they return they cannot function in society. Thats why this program exists. They should not be respected, but pitied.

          • @Stivo: They are not sold honour, in many cases it's desperation. For e.g. in the US, joining armed forces means direct benefits like free/subsidised college education or even just stable employment.

            • -1

@d3al: Its true and sad. In places like Russia they are basically slaves who have zero agency.

              • @Stivo: and in places like Ukraine they are fighting to not come under the very rule that you note is sad and give folks zero agency. Sold honour - I don't think so, reality is much more complex than that!

                • -2

@hoxygt: In America and Australia there is no invasion. We are sold honour to manipulate the kids.

                  • +2

@Stivo: Sold to manipulate what kids? Those who join the armed forces have the opportunity to learn trades, technical and professional skills and get paid for it. Making the ultimate sacrifice is unlikely but its a choice, peacekeeping and other humanitarium deployments are common.

I'm not sure we have that same - 'honour' culture the seppo's have but it'd be an interesting exercise to think about what the world would be like had they not 'stuck their noses' into all those conflicts they have over the past 50 years or so?

  • Does this mean I can walk in anytime or do I need to book appointments with them still?

    • +5

Headspace, in this deal, is a meditation app and not to be confused with Headspace the National Youth Mental Health Foundation funded by the Australian Government.

  • Hey HamBoi69, you should make a additional message for step one to say that the email address to sign up has to not be the same as what you'll make for headspace as will be instructed below.

  • what an awesome instructions,guide.
Appreciated as well for the app access.
    cheers

  • Why can't you use an existing account?

  • +1

Thanks OP. You can also get the Spiritune app in Step 2b.

  • I have an existing headspace free account for over 7 years. Last week I tried using the existing email and there was an error when trying to login via fb to claim this deal so I left it. I just tried again today and everything worked smoothly. I was able to use my existing email and didn't need to wait 4-7 days like OP. Maybe they've updated the sign up process?
