    G84 👍

Can we talk about how the specs of the Moto G84 is very similar to the S24, if not better in terms of battery life. In terms of raw specs, the G84 has 5000mAh battery vs the S24's 4000mAh battery and is comparable to the S24U's battery of 5000mAh. The G84 and S24 have a similar camera though the S24 wins in that aspect. S24's screen is far better with Amoled vs P-Led but both have same screen resolution and refresh rate. Did I mention it also has a headphone jack!
It does have a weaker chip than the S24, but that is expected for a phone 1/4th the cost. This is a really good phone for around $300.

        It's not though

        https://m.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=12526&idPhone2=…

        Some pros some cons.

        Def not like for like

        • -4

I compared it via raw specs. I am not well versed in what makes a good phone good so take what I said with a grain of salt. Even if it isn't similar, it is still a very good phone for the price.

          • +2

@NotReallyaMoneySaver: Yeah, xiaomi's give the G84 a run for the money.

It's pretty good price for the brand and of some of the features. CPU is a bit of a let down.

I'd just recommend people get a phone of what they want. Can do this via gsmarena, search what features you want. Spits out a list. Both phones may or may not be on that list.

          • +3

@NotReallyaMoneySaver: I don't get why Android mid to cost effective range phones continue to use crippled CPUs / APUs. Snapdragon 695's CPU performance is kind of like Snapdragon 845, which was from late 2017. The GPU is on 695 is still crippled. So, no 4K video recording, and USB 2 support (no USB 3).

UFS 2.2 storage on G84 is 2X slower than UFS 3.1. With these cost effective phones, it might be best to try to spot these differences. I guess it is fine if you don't play games on your phone, but it is frustrating these 6xx series Snapdragon CPUs are still being used.

            • @netsurfer: So what you are saying is my LG v50 SD 855 is actually better than g84 in term of performance alone? That's a bit crazy for mid range still performing like SD845

            • @netsurfer: Thanks for the USB transfer info. Always transferring a lot of data from my phone to my PC. Couldn't find the info for this model

      • +1

I have been using g84 for more than 2 months now.
        Excellent phone for the price.
Does everything you would want. About the camera, the Photos are ok.
        I don't play games and I'm on the phone a lot…
Battery life is good and charging is super fast.
I paid $379 and got $100 in a JB gift card.
        The old screen is amazing.
        Touch is very good too.

Don't compare this phone with the S24U. This is a very good budget mobile phone.

        • -3

I compared only the battery size on face value. The fact that a top end of a flagship has the same battery size as a phone 1/6th it's price is absolutely crazy. I compared it to the S24 which was a bad comparision as @Korban Dallas mentioned. Thank you for the review though. I may buy it though the fact it runs on Android 13 and only gets one year of OS updates is concerning.

          • +2

@NotReallyaMoneySaver: When comparing battery it's also good to check actual SOT.

Some CPUs and setups are more efficient than others. So a 5000mah battery v 4000mah one might not be that much different in a real world example.

          • +2

@NotReallyaMoneySaver: One OS version isn't really concerning though; even Android 8.1 is still compatible with most apps.

        • About the camera, the Photos are ok.

A shame they have cut down the quality of the camera for the last few years at least. I had a Moto G5 Plus that had a good camera for its time, but later Motos I bought to replace it seemed worse.

          • @kiitos: Marketing, sadly. Higher megapixel count in the same senor area means smaller less sensitive pixels.

They're now starting to do pixel binning very commonly to make up for it; but most people are braindead to technology these days, and a 'perfect' 8MP sensor would still lose sales to a woeful 50MP.

As a great example: My old 2MP canon still takes nicer photos than a phone, thanks to lens size, and was known to outperform its 5MP big brother.
Just dont ask it to do video…. Thats one area where smartphones are leaps ahead of point-and-shoots.

            • @MasterScythe: Top end camera phone pics will beat most older digitals now. Normally have higher dynamic range and better high iso.

As you suggest though, higher MP count doesnt equal better pics. My pixel 8 pro destroys the past few phone cameras i have had despite them all being similar or high megapixel.

That you can even do a side by side with a $5000 mirrorless setup is pretty amazing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8nSeVniXSY

              (i have had dslr/mirrorless cameras since ~2005)

The night sight mode completely destroys my mirrorless handheld at night. It isn't even close. The pixel shows star constellations when my proper camera gives me a blurry mess. (obvoiusly a tripod would improve the situation)

They use different battery tech for what it’s worth. Cheaper phones tend to get the cheapest inferior tech, so the Motorola gets a Li-Po battery. Motorola is basically cutting corners to keep costs down, but this is all part of the compromises needed to reach this price.

They both are targeting different market segments. The Samsung is basically a flagship phone, so it has one of the best cameras on a phone, best screen, one of the fastest SoCs and long support of at least 7 years. Nobody could expect the Motorola could compete given the cost.

The pixel 6a deals are still the best value phones imo. They come close in most areas to the more pricey alternatives, such as great camera, good oled screen and nice longish support. I personally would never buy a Motorola until they improve cameras and support. But I can see why the Motorolas are so popular.

    • Assume 84 don’t have e sim? Couldn’t not find details

      • Yes, G84 doesn't have e-sim.

I live these motorola phones. I've been using them for years.

    • +1

Same here. However I dont like where they are all headed … down the path of no 3.5mm jack and no microsd card 😥

I Adapted to Bluetooth headphones but not gonna lie, I chose this phone over poco cos mSD

  • Is it worth finding a deal on an edge 30 fusion over the g84 if a similar price to this can be found? Or just get this?

    • -7

AH-HAHAHAHA wouldn't piss on a Motorola m8. May as well run it over wif ya lawn mowa ay HAHA

    • +1

Depends on your needs. I dont think the fusion does microSD; and I like to backup, so thats crucial for me.

But im slowly realising that usb otg storage might soon be my only option.

  • +1

I mentioned this in the previous post on this phone.

The G84 is the best budget all rounder. Good at everything.

  • +1

G84 is the same price as the recent Mobile Citi deal and is probably the best value mid range phone, provided you can justify ponying up the extra $90 price differential from the G54.

  • Moto G84 or the new released Poco M6 Pro? Poco has the 65w fast charging which is big plus but obviously no local warranty and 5g connection except I believe for the Indian market.

    • +3

As the 3g network is turned off in near future, there is always a risk buying a phone thats not released in Australian market due to non Volte support.

      • And with 3G frequencies being largely re-deployed to 5G, not having 5G will actually start to matter in terms of coverage.

    • I've been comparing it to the poco x6 5g.

  • G84 is single physical sim and no microSD?

    • +2

Dual physical or one physical + sd

      Hybrid Dual SIM (nano-SIM + nano-SIM/micro-SD)

  • +4

I'd jump on this but the lack of updates sucks .
I've had a couple of Motorola's and loved them .
Never been too worried about missing out on the latest version of Android but security updates are a thing when your phone doubles as your wallet .

    • +7

      Speaking broadly;
Working in a SecOps related field; not nearly as much as you think.
Banking apps operate within a sandbox and so do browsers.

Generally, security updates prevent on-device exploits.
In the case of banking apps, you have the SafetyNet Attestation API too (which is fully cryptographically-signed).

Exploits that can happen OTA are very rare, and usually targeted. (pegasus, as an example)

Keep your apps updated, dont install small time apps 'just to try' them, and dont connect to strangers wifi.

      Tldr;
If the banking app is happy (passing safetyNET), then so should you be.

Dont install apps you dont trust.

      • +1

do you think it's OK to use phones with Android versions that are 3-4 versions older than the latest?

        • +7

Yep. So long as the apps still update, theres no reason why not. As I said. Most apps are sandboxed. The only risk is in things like shitty ad API's baked into 'free' software (might be poorly coded and have exploits).

I obsessively sniff/pcap my network traffic.

My Blackberry running Android 8.1 and used for everything still doesnt send any unexpected data, and still passes safetyNET just fine.

        • Yes I am on Android 11 and no problems

  • Bloody bargains, mate !

  • how is this one compared to the Motorola Edge 30 Pro, which is still on sale at JB-Hifi for $450 ?

    • Where?

      • nvm the deal is gone. Last week it was available at $449 for the single Sim version at JB

      • JB-Hifi

  • 922S8B24QQZ33W

  • Update what update? Check online with how Motorola (don't) update their phones.
Too bad, otherwise I'd be happy to buy one.

    • +1

The updates really aren't as bad as some like to make out. Motorola say updates are bi-monthly and that is roughly the case in my experience.

      I have a G82 and the update history so far;
      2 Nov 2022
      3 Nov
      10 Dec
      2 Feb 2023
      25 Feb
      12 May
      29 June
      25 Aug, Android 13.
      26 Aug
      26 Oct
      29 Dec
Due for the next one in Feb based on the history.

  • Well posted !

  • Will the G54 support networks in in USA, EU, JP? Is this like a global/international model or does Moto release different band support depending on where you purchase the device?

  • Does the G54 have dual physical sims as well? Or is it just one physical hybrid + esim?

    • +1

The latter ie eSim + physical Sim & SD card.

      • Thanks. Just to clarify, so if I use an sd card I won't be able to use the physical sim then?

        • +1

The physical sim card is next to the micro-sd card so that you can have both one physical sim and one micro-sd card.

What you can't have on the G54 is two physical sim cards because the micro-sd card slot is just that, it's not provisioned as a second physical sim card slot like many other phones such as the G84. I suspect the reason is that the second sim card capability is taken up by the e-sim so that's why the G54 is one physical sim plus one e-sim.

  • ffs keep missing these 314 deals. Stock seems to be drying up might have to do unOzb thing and just bite bullet at 350

    • It’s still active for 14 mins more.

      • +2

Nah was no stock for delivery or anywhere nearby

  • +1

Couldnt even get it delivered, would have to drive over 200km to get one, sigh

  • Plenty of stock in Harvey Norman and Amazon but at $348 of course.

  • Moto g series budget handsets have been pretty decent spec wise, and a variety of differences.

  • Purchased the basic G14 for my parents Click & Collect from my local JB. They don't use the mobile much. So don't need all the features of the more expensive higher end models.
