Check My Gaming Setup - Budget $3,500

Heya, I was wondering for a few expert opinions on a new gaming PC I wish to order. Let me know if I should change anything.
I don't plan on overclocking but I like white and RGB lights. I want to keep the OS drive clean and install all my games on the 2nd NVMe

What are you actually planning on playing with this rig? $3500 is a lot if you're just gna rip around in minecraft.

No I play the latest survival games

Looks okay but why are you getting an mATX case with an EATX case?

I would personally go with air cooling the CPU just because it's more worry free.

    • Do you have a better recommendation for a Motherboard? I do like lots of USB ports available but motherboards seems to vary a lot in price without much different in performance.

      • mATX is said to the awkward middle child between ATX and ITX but I went with one for my build and got a 7 usb port pcie card https://www.umart.com.au/product/orico-7-port-usb-3-0-pcie-d…. Can get one for like $20 on AliExpress. This will be a good option for you and easy to DIY.

I think you're better off keeping the mobo and downsizing to an mATX case. I went with the cooler Master nr400 for the HDD COMPATIBILITY and size. The specified EATX case is over 50cm x 50cm.

You need to look at what's important for you case wise. Some have more front usb ports including usb C, volume, hdd compatibility, glass door, ventilation, noise, wood accents.

Can have a look at pcpartpicker for options

I'd look at a PSU that supports ATX v3.0 for the nicer cabling (and supposed better dealing with power). Otherwise as above, air cooling and think about matx. You could probably tweak the storage to save a little bit of cash but if you've got $3.5k to blow then do whatever you like.

That gpu is now 1500 at msy
I'd go with the PS120 or the PA120 for air-cooling as mentioned above and save an extra $100

OP, listen to this guy. Watercooling is a load of wank these days unless you’re keen on paying for aesthetics. Go for the 7 pipe PS120 that was posted the other day.

you don't need great cooling for the 7800x3d, so I would step down to a 240mm AIO or air cooling as someone else mentioned above.
this would also allow you to get a smaller case as long as it fits the 4080.

  • I agree with the others regarding the air cooler, have a look at a round up like this one by GamersNexus. A good air cooler is as good as if not better than an AIO cooler, and is an investment that can easily last 10 years.

  • A lot of you guys are suggesting to get an air cooler than a AIO cooler. Isnt a AIO cooler quieter?

    • +2

Not necessarily. You have the pump motor which can generate noise. As the bearing ages they can be noisier.

Good quality fans are very cheap and affordable. Don't need to go as high quality as noctua these days either.

still needs fans for the radiator

    • AIOs are better for CPUs that use a lot of power and generate a lot of heat. Air is always the preferred solution (less components to go wrong) but it doesn't dissipate enough heat for a lot of the high end CPU's (i9's for example).

One of the features of the 7800x3d is it's power efficiency so you definitely want to look into air coolers and get a good one. Deepcool and Noctua are both excellent brands and have great track records but can you do your own research there.

Is it always ideal to get 2x separate NVMe (1x for OS and 1x storage) rather than a single 2TB NVMe?

    • I think so, but there are people here that know a lot better than me. My current setup 2060 Super has a 2TB storage drive and its full. Current games are only getting bigger and bigger

      • This used to be a thing with old versions of windows but it doesn't really matter anymore - it's just personal preference now (if you need to re-install windows it helps but that's about it!). The main thing to do is always ensure there's 10% space available on an SSD.

  • That's a solid build and I don't have anything to add that others haven't already.

Just a couple of tips - with DDR5 ensure that whatever sticks you choose are explicitly specified to match your motherboard (found on mobo manufactures website).
Also, that price for the 4080 ($1,499) is banger - if you're going with this build I'd place that order ASAP before it goes back up. (yeah, they could drop when the supers release but in this climate - who knows what will happen!)
