ANA are doing a repeat of this deal except this time there's more dates (see below) and they're available in May, June, August and September.

Most flights in my testing seem to be $1077.86 return and I was able to do Sydney-Haneda-Fukuoka-Haneda-Sydney in May for around 3 weeks at this price. If you haven't flown ANA before you get 2x 23kg checked bags in economy.

Dam anything that's similar pricing for VIC?

    • +2

Unfortunately not. I always have to fly to another state for any international so it's not a big deal for myself.

    • No ANA direct flights from Melbourne

  • +2

    Waiting for October! Praying!
    This would be perfect!

    • What are the domestic flight luggage limits like?

      • +2

I believe it's only one checked bag (correct me if I'm wrong), however if you were going from Sydney to Haneda and transferring direct to a domestic flight your bags would carry over.

Otherwise you can use Yamato to send your bags between hotels. It's a good service and available pretty much everywhere. Alternatively go over with one bag and buy a suitcase tax free from Don Quixote to bring back with you. You'll easily fill a suitcase in that place.

        • Yeah thanks, I thought this might be the case, so good to be mindful for the domestic flights.

          • +5

@Owgasm: if you purchase the domestic leg together with your international tickets in one booking, the checked bag limit for international luggage applies. (2 x 23kg)
So its better to purchase it together in one booking than booking the domestic leg separately.

            • +1

@tensai: To sweeten up the deal NH flights from Sydney now fly to Terminal 2. Same building as the domestic flights.
Not only this save you time at the immigration (which is mostly just the passengers from the same flight as you), you straight walk into the domestic luggage drop-off point as soon as you clear customs.

              • @Daibaw: Especially good for a return to Australia with Excel Hotel right in the domestic departures. I stayed there a couple of months ago and it's a fun terminal at night.

      • Normally 1x20 for ANA and JAL, but if you're just doing the golden route it's easier and better to take the train instead.

It's also far better to pack light in Japan and take a backpack only as going up/down stairs, across town and on trains with a suitcase is super painful.

      • I will wager that the domestic leg on ANA will probably give you 2xbags on this deal.

Because with the JAL explorer pass domestic flights (available to foreign passport holders with any intl return flight) you are given the international baggage limit of 2 bags.

  • +2

Wish ANA would announce flights departing Perth past March.

    • +1

Looks like they're only offering a seasonal service that runs until late March:

      https://www.wa.gov.au/government/media-statements/Cook-Labor…

But it also says that they intend to turn it into a year round service.

    • +1

They’ve announced in Japanese they are suspending PER NRT direct services from April until end October 24, with some exceptions in April 24.

  • +17

Please come to BNE/OOL and free us from Jetstar/Qantas tyranny ANA/JAL. (;_; )

    • Totes agree…..Come on

    • They may as well since the population of Sydney & Melbourne all moved to Brisbane

      • +1

Their probably to scared to land at Brisbane International seeing as though it still looks like it’s back in the sixties, horrible horrible airport

        • 😂 probably. However I can’t say Sydney or Melbourne are much better.

        • +2

That’s harsh. It’s not even 30 years old and much much nicer than Melbourne

          • @mjref: Ive been to both, Brisbane takes the cake for not being updated in decades

    • plus MEL

    • BNE/OOL losing airlines… From my personal experience, BNE has very poor custom service (bio-security checks), the officers there treated everyone like criminals, similar to my experience with cops in US. OOL very poor ground service at international terminal, lots of complaints on delays due to gate issues, and luggages were so slow that no one piece on carousel even well after everyone cleared immigration.

  • How does the free domestic flights work?

    • +2

On the flight search page you need to go to "multiple cities" and add in one of the cities mentioned in the deal. You may need to click "All search options" for it to show.

      • thank you! this is crazy value. am I missing something

        • +1

Only that the weather from May to September will be hot and humid.

          • @Clear: like bali and vietnam - I can manage!

            • +4

@ChatCPT: Super sticky and sweaty combined with dense urban concrete heat islands. People complain about it but I love it. Evening walks in Japan in Summer are some of my favourite memories.

              • @wavesgreen:

Evening walks in Japan in Summer are some of my favourite memories.

Plus one. But I have to hear the complaints during the day

              • +1

@wavesgreen: was averaging over 35 degrees last summer in Japan. I swear there could have been a streak of 40+ days of 35+ degrees. it was disgustingly hot. May June should be fine tho

    • Did you get this to work? It add's $800+ when I add internal flights

      • One city or multiple?

        • +1

Got it, needs to be same day travel e.g below is sale price, if you try and split the tokyo <-> sapporo leg to another day it costs additional

          May 11 (Sat)

Sydney (SYD - Australia) To Tokyo (All) To Sapporo (New Chitose)

          May 23 (Thu)

Sapporo (New Chitose) To Tokyo (All) To Sydney (SYD - Australia)

      • Yes, I got a few dates to work but Im still playing around.

When I add FUK - HND it adds $400

        So far I got working:
        SYD - HND
        HND - ITM
        ITM - FUK

        HND - SYD

  • Any recommended tools for planning activities in Japan?

    • +16

When you find something you're interested in you should Save it on Google Maps. Then when you're over there you'll see something like this and you can visit them as you travel. There was countless times when I opened maps and saw something nearby I completely forgotten about. You can categorise them too with different icons.

      • +1

exactly what i do. use the categories in google maps to break them up or create your own. i do
        stars = restaurants
green flags = places to visit
little blue suitcase = where the airport is/hotel is
        etc etc

        • I only realised you could do it that way after adding 700 favourites 😅 Too much work going back.

          • @Clear: fair enough. dont go back but start new categories for future

i do it in sydney (home) too. sometimes I'm in a suburb for some reason and hungry = boom I've got a recommendation ready to go eg if I end up visiting my mate in chatswood = jeans chili chicken time

            • @ChatCPT: Eastwood?

              • @spaij: probably. see this is why theyre all marked on my map

        • @ChatCPT Hi ChatCPT, this is a great idea! I hadn't noticed the different icons before until you'd mentioned them. I can see the stars, suitcase, and flag, but they were preset.

Is there a way to create new lists with your own choice of icon or do you use the pre-existing lists?

          • @Sploots: You can make your own.

Choose something and press save to list then hit new list where you can call it what you like and give it a new icon

            • @ChatCPT: @ChatCPT Ah, making new icons wasn't an option for me at all. Turns out I had the old version. Now I've updated the app and it's possible! Thanks for your help!

Renting a vehicle is flat out insane in Japan (unless you're doing something way off the beaten path like Okinawa)

      • +3

Can't speak for bikes but I've rented a car 10+ times on holidays, mainly snow trips too, and never had an issue.

      • +1

Not entirely true. If only at city area, buses and metros are very good. If going out to national parks of less populated area, can save lots of time by driving. For example you might be able to visit 2 parks in a day driving compared to one with public transport, simply due to bus/train schedules..

      • It's absolutely not insane to rent a vehicle in Japan. Really depends on the sort of holiday you like.

I've done both in Japan (rail holiday, hired a car) and they're both awesome.

The rail system is one of the best in the world. Between major cities, a bullet train will be much faster than driving or riding. The fact that you can send your luggage point to point (whether you're in a car or on a train) makes travelling by train even better. Easy, convenient.

If you love road trips and the freedom and flexibility that comes with that (just jump straight on your car or bike, leave when you want to leave, stop wherever you want to stop and explore stuff off the beaten track), then Japan is fantastically well set up for that too.

I'd avoid driving in major metro cities (other than to drive in and park at wherever you're staying) and I found the process of hiring a car was more complicated than usual. But actually driving there is a breeze. Drivers are very polite, the roads and highways are very well maintained, getting around was easy and everyone follows the road rules. In three weeks I saw one person speeding - a dude in a Maserati absolutely caning it in the overtaking lane. Within a minute I saw two highway patrol cars tracking him down!

If you'd prefer the convenience of rail, then Japan is perfect for that. If you like to drive or ride, it's brilliant for that too.

    • +4

It's not like the rest of Asia where everyone is on a moped. The public transport is extremely efficient and you're better off taking the Shinkansen, bus and rapid trains.

If someone figures out an itinerary that works longer than 1 month (8+ weeks) please let me know :)

    • +1

Why, what happens if you use an itinerary for less than 1 month?

      • +5

The fare conditions for this deal is maximum stay of 30 days

        • Yeah I am trying to find a good deal for 2-3month duration to camp and hike areas from Osaka up to Hokkaido, 1month is too short.

  • 19/08/2024 - 12/09/2024
Within this timeframe, how come it works out to be $1408 if I do:
    Sydney-Tokyo
    Tky-Fukoka
    Fuk-Osaka
    Osk-Tky
    Tky-Syd

The important word is from in the title. It's possible it might only allow 1 free domestic flight.

If it was me I'd take the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka. It's only about 3 hours, unlike the 6+ hours for Fukuoka.

      • +1

Ok thanks, I read FROM Sydney and FREE Domestic with(IN) FlightS (plural) separately.

        • -1

          I meant the from $999.

  • +2

For those who cant find a deal and have the option of flying JL.

JLs Economy on their B788s and B789s are way superior to any other 787 product on the market due to their seating configuration. A 2-4-2 or 8 abreast seating versus ANAs and everyone elses 3-3-3 or 9 abreast seating plan.

  • Bugger, just booked flights/hotel package through Trip.com a couple of days ago. ANA flights were about $1300…

  • I had been looking at those over the weekend..As soon as it was posted I booked lol

The fear of being ozbargained lo

  • is there anything in reverse, id love a return trip to japan

  • Anyone have any recommendations on what to do for 2 week trip to Japan in May?

    • Lots of flowers…

      • …laying around on the ground by May, except for maybe Hokkaido.

    • First time there?

If so, I can recommend doing Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima and Osaka.

      • +2

Kyoto is easily becoming my least favourite place in Japan. Extremely overcrowded, extremely touristy, bad public transport and if you speak Japanese you'll quickly learn they hate everyone.

        • So with this deal would it be worth flying SYD to TOKYO return and use bullet trains for the rest of the trip? Or use this deal to book internal domestic flights to all the destinations?

          • +1

@mash6280: I mean you can still visit Kyoto but just be aware of the overcrowding. Like the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and surrounding areas during the day has insane crowds and if you want to cross Togetsukyo Bridge be prepared to line up and wait 10 minutes just to cross the road. Fushimi Inari Shrine is the same so I went around 11pm and only saw a dozen others. By around 6am that place is getting packed.

The free economy flight is definitely worth it if you want to go to the other end of the country. A flight to Sapporo is a good idea as you can't get a Shinkansen the whole journey. You'll make it to the bottom of the island and then have to transfer to other train lines. A flight to Fukuoka is worth it if you want to see the southern island, i.e. Kagoshima as a Shinkansen from Tokyo to Fukuoka is about 6 hours.

Doing a flight from Tokyo to Osaka I think is a waste of time given it's about 3 hours from Tokyo on a Shinkansen.

            • @Clear: but flight from tokyo to osaka is 1h 05min surely thats better than a 3 hr train ride even accounting for airport lines given its free on this deal?

              • @ChatCPT: If it was me I'd be taking a connecting flight to somewhere further away by Shinkansen.

  • Any flight from Melbourne that is on promo ?

  • +2

Trouble with Bne is departure security is way to small for international flights leaving morning to mid morning and the racial profiling/unconscious bias border force staff when arriving. Place smell like barn yard.
