[PC, Steam] Road 96 - $7.49 (75% off) @ Steam

210

For those who recently snapped up Firewatch and enjoyed it, Road 96 is heavily recommended as a similar style game. Its currently 75% off on steam.

The associated bundles are also on sale. Given the current heat wave in NSW, maybe a good time to stay inside in the aircon and play some games.

$7.49 is the lowest this game gets too according to steamdb.

Is this like good old Interstate 76? My mate had an overclocked P150 with Voodoo Fx card and that was a cracker of a game.

    • Overclocked by using the "jumper" on different pins? It's been a while.

      • I think so? I remember doing that on my K6-233. Exposed pads and drawing a line between the two using a graphite pencil.

  • I must of missed the firewatch deal but this looks interesting

  • This game is apparently beautiful. Thanks for the recommendation.

  • Got this a few weeks back on PS5 for about $4-5. Nice to play something where you dont have to shoot nonstop. These days it seems like if its not a sports game theres a 95% chance you will be trying to kill with a gun.

I couldn't believe Stride has guns. They should have made a parkour game be about… parkour. Sigh. It stopped me from purchasing

It honestly seems like all these Devs think, its not a game unless you can shoot or kill something?!

        • I think it’s because it’s quick and cheap to make (maybe?). Use the Unreal or Cry engine and slap on a bunch of new surfaces, come up with a new map and some story and done.

          • @GeneralSkunk: Yeah its laziness and it pads the runtime. Put a few stages where you just shoot or fight a group of people or mutants in a simple area and you got a lot more game time. Instead of coming up with something clever they do that way too much in all games, especially so called triple A titles.

            • @Whisper Quiet: Agree. I don’t game much these days because most games are virtually the same. I grew up in the late 80s and 90s when devs wrote games in assembly code and they were so imaginative.

              • @GeneralSkunk: Same age. Used to be a video game nutcase always at the arcades. Had all the consoles too. After the PS3 I stopped. Over a decade of not gaming, Got a PS5 with deluxe subscription and other than a handful of games was really disappointed with most of the stuff out there. Everything has to have neon colours flashing when you hit something or someone, non stop shooting and whatever plot there is, just stolen from other older games. Sad whats happened.

                • @Whisper Quiet: Oh yeah, the last console I had was a PS3 which I sold. I was so over the routine of every time I turned it on, it would not let me play a game until it connected to PSN. That then led to it checking for updates and forcing me to update, which was a ~10 minute DL + 5 minute install/restart. PITA.

I just built a Ryzen 7 + 64GB + GTX3060 for work (CAD), and the only measly game I play on it is Far Cry 3 at 4K with max settings. I have purchased a couple of others which I haven't tried yet, but I think there might be some hope for us in the indie games and smaller stuff. Seems like there's a whole world of stuff on GOG. Maybe I'll install an emulator and play Another World, haha. One of my favs of all time.

Same price for DRM-free version at GOG
Edit: well, it's actually 1¢ more expensive but worth it imo

Cheers, bought. You can pay a few dollars more and get a 268 page 'prologue ebook' (some sort of choose your own adventure) the game soundtrack in flac and mp3 and some sort of documentary. Interesting, why not.
