    You'd be surprised how little something costs when you purchase in massive numbers. Also, this might have been a back to school product that was overstocked taking up valuable wearhouse space and it's better to have them all sold quick. Another reason for reducing products close to cost price would be staying traffic into the store in the hope that you purchase other items.

    Loss leader although I don't think they would be taking much of a hit on a product like this, while you're in-store buying little Johnny and Mary a drink bottle what other crap will you buy before you leave.

    the ACCC inquiry will find out how they make a profit selling these for $1 , might be cheaper next time., considering how much they sell bottled water for they could have done a promo and sold bottled water with re-usable bottles.

  Metal bottles are better in my opinion for school and general use, especially ones that can stay cold and hot for a decent amount of times.
