5800X3D Bundle, or Step up to AM5?

Hi All,

I have a current set up, with a Budget Micro ATX and Ryzen 5600G, paired with quad channel 32GB Ram, and a 3070.

Odd choice of hardware, as I bought it all second-hand a while ago, so beggars cant be choosers.

I am thinking now of upgrading my Processor to get the most out of the 3070, and so trying to decide on the following:

  • Swap 5600G for 5800X3D
  • Above, plus new motherboard
  • AM5 with DDR5 Ram (7800X3D)

I am interested to hear everyone opinions on this, in terms of cost to performance. I am fine shopping second hand.

Thanks,

  • 5800X3D are still selling for diamonds… :(

    • $500 is a tough sell. I know as well I will need to lump on a cooler as well (summer weather + hot house = not great for stock cooler).

      • I think they hold their price as there's a lot of us who would love to upgrade to them :(

as for original question, it all depends on your budget… you could just bite the bullet and upgrade everything now and be happy for few yrs, or just do bits and be unhappy in 6 mths time.

        • Yeh, why discount something that is selling at that price.

If they ever get to sub $450 I'll get a 5800X3D. Tbh the 5800X is very tempting at current sale prices, just not quite punchy enough. Otherwise I'll be going for the 7800X3D or 7700X depending on pricing and just updating my whole system where required to support it.

    • Yeh, I am still tossing up full AM5 upgrade or keep AM4

Honestly, it’s entirely up to you. Your options vary considerably.

The Budget wise answer is just slap in a new cpu and keep the rest saved for a whole pc upgrade later - including a next gen gpu when they’re released.

But even though it’s previous gen, the 5800x3d isn’t exactly a budget cpu - so I doubt you really want to hear this opinion.

Maybe just grab a cheap 5700x, watch the 1% lows jump considerably, and be happy knowing you’re ok to spend a bit more on the next pc?

      Appreciate the advice!

  • Isn't there a 5700x3d coming out? That might be better value.

    • Could be option, pending the release price

To play devils advocate - unless you're aiming for very high FPS, you're not going to get a particularly good bang for buck from upgrading. Move to AM5 and you'll be itching for a GPU upgrade straight away because the 3070 will be the bottleneck

I only say this because I've been sitting on a 3700x and a 3080 and I mostly game at 4K. For the pricing of upgrading to a 5800x3d I went and got a decent handheld setup that gives me a whole new option on gaming. I still desperately want that upgrade though.

I think from what I have been reading, its mainly the 1% lows for me. I find in some FPS games I can get a slight stutter.

Im either going to go all out, or minor upgrade.

This video is a comparision, luckily with my exact set up (3070). RDR2 and Cyberpunk, no difference, but check out Fortnite, the third comparision: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yN-n38dGP2Q

Edit: Fortnite used as the call out as aligns with my most common games (Fortnite, COD, Rocket League)

I'm still a fan of AM4 for affordability, but realistically 5700X like @barge-in hunter said would be the best option. I also have a 5600G and will replace that with a 5700X and then use the 5600G to replace a 3600 on another machine.

With 5800X3D you will almost definitely need a new motherboard (I probably wouldn't trust budget mobo VRM with a 5800X3D) and cooler due to higher TDP.

With AM5, parts are expensive and personally I feel that DDR5 isn't really near peak mainstream speeds as of yet, so any current RAM would be subject to higher than usual depreciation.
