Tall Metal Cooking Thermometer Suggestions

I want to make some chilli oil so need a food thermometer that goes up to about 400-500 F (200-200C).

None of the main kitchenware places have anything too suitable, checked house, robins kitchen, chefs hat etc.

Temu has some that does this range but im scared it will be some dodgy material or something given its going in my food.

Anyone know anywhere in Melbourne you can find a good tall thermometer that doesnt have plastic or rubber so I can leave it in the pan?

  • Just get an inkbird or similar that has plug in probe with 1m cord. Even aldi selling those at time but the inkbird Bluetooth or wifi models are bullet proof. $50 and you're set. If you want cheaper, a $2 k type probe with 2m length, $10 esp32 and $5 max6675 off aliexpress can give you plenty of fun to monitor your oil from the other side of world.

    • Thanks! Are ali express ones safe? I dont know why but I keep thinking they might have mercury even though I know that's not real

Digital thermometers do not contain mercury. Only old analog thermometers contain mercury - the mercury rises as the temperature increases due to an increase in pressure.

  • What about a non- contact thermometer. ?

    Bunnings sells one for $29.95.

    Or $18.90 delivered from ebay

    • Hmm how do they work with a chilli oil for instance? Would it give the oil temp or the pans temp?

      • Infra-red thermometer is very inaccurate because it might not reflect the true temperature of the liquid, it only pick up the steam or top layer and sometimes depending on your skill, temperature of the container.

        • Surely if you mix the mix thoroughly, then take a big spoonfull and measure that then it would be quite accurate.
