[Kogan First] Valve Steam Deck LCD 512GB $799 Delivered @ Kogan

580

Not a bad price if you are not after the more expensive OLED version.
Look at differences between 64GB and 512GB other than memory capacity, to decide yourself whether they are worth the extra $130 $104 over 64GB version.

If you do make use of the Kogan First free trial, remember to cancel it within 2 weeks ;-)

Cheaper to get the 64gb and upgrade it yourself. $142AUD for 1TB SSD

    • Someone hates Tom's Hardware enough to down-vote a comment that saves people money.

Its more so that upgrading the SSD in the deck is far from risk free like with the PS5, you could easily brick it if you are inexperienced.

        • +2

I'd rank the upgrade as easy difficulty, just follow along to an instructional on youtube. You'd have to be really careless to brick a steamdeck doing this.
The even easier solution is just buy a 512Gb SD card or more. Its not as fast as an internal drive could be, but thats still an option for those who are worried.

I'm not downvoting your comment, but that mindset can be crippling in life. Everyone is inexperienced their first time. I broke CPU pins on my first PC build 20 years ago because the lever was in the wrong position or something, and Youtube didn't exist. It's one thing to be apprehensive about DIY, but I'm not going to be the PC-upgrade police and downvote posts because I screwed up my own PC build.
I think you should get the deck and upgrade it. Give yourself a win. Tell your friends about it. Maybe you'll end up helping others and feel even better about yourself.

@BoltThrower: Me mentioning that upgrading the SSD in a Steam Deck is a not exactly without risk does not mean I downvoted the original comment like you are insinuating and it definitely doesnt mean I have a mindset that will cripple me in life either.

I was simply stating why someone might downvote a comment recommending a DIY upgrade in place of a different SKU, there is also one major difference between the 64GB model and the 512GB model that cant be as easily upgraded, the Anti-glare etched glass screen. The original comment made no mention of this and it a pretty big factor if you are using it outdoors, which is very likely considering this is a handheld PC.

I dont know how you wanted your comment to come across, but this is the first time that I block someone on this website, try not to assume so much about someone from one comment in the future; it comes off as extremely condescending.

            • @Vinodra: I'm sure the anti-glare glass looks better, but the porosity of the coating causes a problem when using screen protectors. It also picks up dirt, grease and scratches easier. I'd prefer using a screen protector which can also remove glare, as I do with my phone. At some point I WILL drop it.
              Again, personal preference.

Pretty decent if you're after the matte screen and really don't want to open up the Steam Deck.

    Personally, I'd recommend waiting for a sub $650 64GB or a ~$1000 512gb OLED.

    • 64gb is being discontinued, so is the 512gb

      • True. I can see the 256gb model taking the place of the 64gb model in price.

If the Steam Deck is your intro to PC gaming, the 256gb might be enough.

  • +3

    Cheers mate
Just reminded me to check 256gb, can claim another $50 price protection

    Where does the steam go?

    • It vaporises into the air

    • +11

If you open the valve, it goes to the cloud.

    • +9

It's a very different device to the Switch. Beyond investment in the console, there are more than enough free games on PC.

    • +2

It has like 10x the library incl. Ps5 and xbox games, and doest lag in 2d games

    • +8

This runs switch games better than the switch does

    • +1

Yeesh, you really just said that.

  • +2

yeah its still not enough for me to give up my switch OLED with over 300 games on it lol.

    • why not both!?

      • +2

i own a gaming pc for one so it would be a low powered pc I wouldn't take any where lol.

        • +5

I'm in similar situation but I ended up using steamdeck more since it's portable. It's a great backlog machine lol.

          • +2

@Letrico: I use it to stream my gaming PC outside of my room. Has made me go through so much of my backlog now

Still waiting to hear back from Kogan regarding my SD from their previous sale. Almost been a week and no response at all. Only contact is through a message centre. Maybe take that into consideration if you're going to buy the SD from them… I'm definitely regretting it.

    • +1

That's very disheartening to hear, I have been waiting (missed the last sale) for some kind of discount to order one. I did send them a question about it about 3 days ago and haven't heard a peep back, their customer service seems abysmal. Only other real option (in terms of dealing with a larger retailer) is Amazon, please update if/when you get it sorted.

    • Got mine from the last sale all fine the $699 64gb LCD model. Took about a week AU charger came a day before

  • +2

OLED way better. Don't do it to yourself.

  • waiting for it to be 300-400

  • Price just dropped $30 down to $799!
