  • Are these refundable ?

  • +2

How about earlier in the year - like May?

  • Prices aren’t bad but those layovers are pretty extreme.

    • +1

Sleep in the lounge. They have sleeping area at Changi.

      • +1

The one I looked at seemed to be a 24 hour lay over. A long time to wander around the airport:).

        • +8

Leave the airport, no visa needed for Aussies in Singapore.

Also you can easily kill 5 hours at Singapore airport anyway. Lounge, explore/shop/etc, lounge again. One of the best airports to be stuck at.

          • @CheapBrah: I agree if you are going to be stuck in an airport this seems to be it.

          • @CheapBrah: There's a cinema around somewhere.

            • @Potedude: There’s a place with rides. I looked up a video of YouTube and this place is insane.

  • +1

    Not bad at all!

  • +1

Australians don't need visa for the European Union, so no need for transit visa for Denmark.

SQ flies directly from Singapore to both Rome and Barcelona, which is more convenient.

But with this extra leg with Scandinavian it is indeed much better price for business class.

    • +1

Flying direct to Rome / Barcelona is definitely more convenient - but that adds at least another $2500 .

    • To be pedantic, SQ doesn’t do a direct to BCN. It’s a very short stop in Milan but passengers continuing the journey to BCN (and other direction) aren’t allowed to get off the aircraft at all.

      • You're correct - I thought that SQ flies directly to BCN and then stop by MXP on return leg, but it looks like it's very short MXP landing in both directions.

      • +2

Sorry I’m also being pedantic - Technically that’s still a direct flight but not non-stop (they are two separate things).

        • I did that last year, on my return flight from Barcelona we were stuck in Milan for 3 hours due to technical issues with the plane

    • +1

This will change once Australia falls under the ETIAS sometime in 2025.

  • +10

Not bad at all for Singapore Airlines business where it actually has a business class service, Qantas and BA business class is just a better seat with an economy service in my experience.

    • +2

Cathay is similarly good. I would guess most Asian airlines are good like that. You only need to look at the luxuriousness of the lounges as evidence.

      • +4

Cathay business is aweful, the product is now old, staff are rude and the slop food. I used to fly them long haul for work regularly as I lived in HK. Singapore are miles better

        • I've flown both Cathay and Singapore Airlines business class and I'd disagree. They are both good but Singapore Airlines was sloppy and was like my seat hadn't been cleaned and they were out of most drinks and food items. Cathay is the best I've flown with great food, great service and the first business class where they weren't out of all the good stuff.

  • +5

For some reason I'd rather spend that extra $3.5k each on better accommodation or experiences when I get there. Like no one reallllllly enjoys flying. An extra $3.5k makes it slightly better for several hours, but I feel benefit/cost ratio pretty low.

    • +1

For long-hail flights, extra money for business class buys you a day or two at destination, as you can actually catch some sleep onboard, and feel refreshed (although still jet lagged). But yes, that might be too big price difference to pay.

      • +1

Yeah probably, although I've never managed to sleep in business class (travel for work). Noise cancelling headphones make a big difference. My theory is people ultimately just like to jangle their chains and post to instagram 😂

        • +1

For long haul, once you've flown J a few times, it's very difficult to go back to Y. The journey itself also becomes something of an experience (at least the first few times you fly on a "proper" business class like SQ or CX or QR) so you can consider your holiday started a little earlier and finished a little later. But yes, it's very difficult to sleep even in F, unless, I imagine, it's a proper F suite. Seasoned/commuting J flyers press DND and reject all out-of-sync meals to prioritise sleep. There are also flyers who is very time-poor and seldom go on holiday. So they prioritise having a "maximum" experience rather than a good-value flying experience.

          • +1

@Jstrrrr: This, once you do a few SQ business class flights on new planes, you realise that rather than your holiday starting the day after you recover from your flight jet lag a day or so after you land in Europe, some 24-36 hours after you depart Aus, it starts when you board the plane (and the same on the homeward flight). It's sort of like adding two days extra to your holiday on the way over, and being able to get straight back into life when you get home. But that is IMHO only, because I cannot sleep sitting up, but have no problem sleeping on a plan if I can lie flat. Business class is a BIG stretch financially for me, often I cannot afford it. But I CAN see it being worth while.

            • @dtpearson: i have anxiety over flying, first class can't make me sleep. i'd rather not to fly at all

            • @dtpearson: I dunno. For $14k extra (assuming 4 family members), you could have a whole other holiday? But at least you can lie down in a pressurised, noisey, turbulent cabin for 48 hours… Bliss… ha

            • +1

@dtpearson: Horses for courses I guess, I feel it's better value spending the money I save from flying economy on a better hotel, nicer restaurants, tours etc at the travel destination.

Ex-Army spent a lot of nights in a hole in the ground I dug, I can survive 24 hours in an economy seat and still function ;-)

    • lol plenty of people enjoy and even love flying.

    • if you are making trade offs then it's probably not for you.. people buying business class seats with cash (definitely not me) aren't spending the money on biz flights INSTEAD of better accommodation or experiences… they buy the seats and the fancy hotels..

  • I’m going to get a heap of hate for this. I flew Singapore business and was not at all impressed. Sure, if it’s your first business trip, it’s amazing compared to economy. Compared to Qatar Q-Suits or Oman Air business, it’s a whole level down. It was so disappointing. This was on their A380, London to Sydney via Singapore. I think the hype is driven by the fact a lot of people first fly business class with Singapore. It wasn’t a bad flight, nothing went wrong but the seat, food, lounge and service were incomparable to Qatar/Oman.

For the prices above, you could almost fly Oman Air and be totally spoilt rotten.

I’m an Ozbargainer so I obviously booked the Singapore flights using points (Velocity).

    • +1

You didn't enjoy the onboard bar area?

I find flying SQ exiting Singapore or anywhere Australasia is fantastic. If you have the points/money, try flying F out of Singapore on SQ - you have an whole building with its own passport control dedicated just to you. Quite an experience. But coming home from Europe, SQ consistently disappoints with both the meals and the service. I think it's to do with the logistics of crew sharing between alliance airlines, resulting in "outside" hostesses aboard SQ.

But also, as I recall, QR J is rated above SQ J anyway. And QR charges more ($10k return vs $6k return to Europe).

    • +1

Similarly unpopular (but contrary) opinion I find Qatar J to be overrated. I've flown SQ in each class and easily best in the sky. Plus Changi is a dream to transit - the J lounge in Doha is always too busy.

For the prices above, you could almost fly Oman Air and be totally spoilt rotten.

Oman's cancellation rate has been super poor and I believe they partner with Malaysian ex AUS (which is by far not my first choice)

You also definitely could not fly Qatar J for this price

      • Will be able to provide an update on Qatar after September. However we managed to snaffle business class to Paris on points.

  • Didn't find Barcelona interesting

Water had a horrible taste and people were rude

Just full of pickpockets and shitty beaches that is suppose to be the "best" in Europe

    • I was considering Barcelona based on the few times I’ve heard how nice the place was.

Maybe Italy might be a better option?

Might have to do some research on where to visit.

      • +1

Don't be deterred by my experience

Much better if you know someone living there

        • Unfortunately don’t know anyone.

      • Honestly do a bit of research and stay alert no matter where you are. Everyone here would have a horror story for almost any place people visit. My worst one was in Prague. If you find stuff you want to see then go. Also have a good look at what time of year to visit. We went to Barcelona with my family in Summer. It, certainly, wasn’t my choice. Hot and humid.

      • +2

Barcelona is pretty crowded with tourists but it’s also one of the most fantastic cities to visit - so long as you like architecture, art and food. If those things aren’t for you, or you hate crowds, try elsewhere

That said, Rome, Florence and Venice probably fit exactly the same criteria; other than Rome has an awful lot of history on top of the rest.

Anyone calling Gaudi ‘a nut’ (as in OP) is probably someone who doesn’t like art or architecture.

    • +1

Sorry to hear - I had a brilliant time in Barcelona and mostly met lovely people. Didn't bother with the beach, but the museums, Parc Guell, Sagrada, and the myriad good options for wining and dining were fantastic.

      • -1

        your forgot Gaudi

some reason the Paella there tasted really bad

        • +2

Sagrada Familia and Parc Guell were both designed by Gaudi - I also walked past Casa de Batillo and Casa Mila but didn't go inside.

          • -3

            @Ozymandias: don't worry you didn't miss much

            Gaudi was a nut RIP

          • +2

@Ozymandias: SF and PG are must sees. Start early to avoid crowds if possible. Casa Mila was fascinating, but nothing on Palau de la Musica (not Gaudi), esp with a performance.

Gothic quarter and cathedral. If you're lucky you might experience locals all around the square (Placa Reial) spontaneously dancing and singing (Sat morning iirc). We were lucky that our trip coincided with the Gracia festival/street parade. Great vibes.

Everyday jamon rolls and good cheap restaurants (esp Barceloneta) - a decade ago, Barcelona markets and of course Las Ramblas and its eclectic mix of street artists.

If you have a spare (half) day take a trip to Montserrat.

            • @Igaf: Our Air BnB place was next to a market. Lots of lovely produce to bring home for dinner.

    • +1

Barcelona is the only place I’ve ever had my purse stolen but I got it back with nothing missing. Learnt a valuable lesson on where to keep my purse now.

However, there are some very interesting places to visit, some great food to eat, and the locals were pretty good. Sometimes you can just have a bad experience.

      • -3

hey just me but shows that pickpockets are in full force

        too busy fending off gypsys

        • +2

OK, maybe some travel isn’t for you.

          • @try2bhelpful: How they steal your purse?

            • @Poor Ass: I was hot and bothered and wasn’t careful with my bum bag. They unzipped it and took the purse. Pretty brazen I have it at the front. A number of passer-by’s alerted me to the theft and showed me where the purse was. Nothing was missing as I had no money in it. I’m not sure if they were good samaritans or part of what happened. I didn’t speak Spanish but I thanked them profusely.

From now on I will use a bread tie through the zip tag holes to make it more difficult and put the purse in a back zip next to my body.

              • @try2bhelpful: Well there you go… No money in it pretty useless

Don't some ladies just chuck their phones in their bra these days

                • +1

@Poor Ass: Fortunately they left the cards. Maybe they didn’t have time.

No way am I leaving a phone next to the girls. Butt dialing is bad enough, imagine bending down and boob dialling. A tiny voice coming from my tits.

                  • @try2bhelpful: Usually people would fingerprint, pattern or pin to unlock… Small chance of misdialing

                    • +1

@Poor Ass: Good point. However it would still be uncomfortable and might overheat.

The most ingenious thing I’ve seen is women with hijabs tucking their phone in near their mouth and ears so they can carry on a conversation, hands free, whilst walking along.

    • Barcelona is my favourite city in Western Europe, people are friendly, architecture is cool, and there is enough interesting stuff to do.

Personally I really didnt enjoy Rome, too busy, too spread out, the locals are rude, food surprisingly poor.

Pickpockets are everywhere in Western Europe.

      • When we did Rome we did the hop on/hop off. You have to push your way on but it takes you to a lot of the more popular sites.

    • pickpockets in barcelona? damn catalonia/spain/europe has fallen

  • +1

Why don't they also offer Syd to Copenhagen since it's all via there?

    • maybe because the ice cream is overpriced

  • People are complaining about cost of bread going up 20 cents

  • How to add stopovers?

  • +2

Wow~~that’s cheap if I can win 150m tomorrow.

    • +1

No way mate that 150 mill is mine. :)

The man and I joked about if we won it. We probably would still balk at paying the dollars for first class.

      • +2

Rich people don’t stay rich wasting money hahaha but with $150m you could let a $20k first class slide through to the keeper, as you’d make that much interest by the time you arrived in London

  • Has anyone here had any experience with the booking sites that iwantthatflight redirects through to? The cheapest ones are via mytrip.com, which seems to get some bad reviews.

    • +1

I’ve seen all the horror stories as well. I only book direct with airlines then I know if there is a drama of their making it will get sorted. Never using these dodgy online agents

  • +1

Fantastic deal, I wish it was only for one month sooner (sep/oct)

  • It's that price for a reason. Weather is getting cold.
