Recommendations for Laptop to Run Scoreboard Software - Budget $500

Hi OzBargain

I'm a volunteer assisting a sporting organization with their need for 5 new laptops to run scoreboard software during competitions. The existing laptops are well beyond their useful lifespan, taking over 10 minutes to boot. I've been tasked with securing quotes for new equipment to ensure everything is in order before their first event in early March.

Key requirements:

Usage: 7-8 competitions annually, with the laptops stored the rest of the time.
Battery life is not a significant concern, as they will be plugged in at all times.
HDMI output for TV connection.
Must include an Ethernet port and 2 USB ports.
Software: Online, browser-based, not resource-intensive.
Long lifespan desired to avoid frequent replacements.
Budget: Flexible, but aiming for a maximum of $500 per device.

I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions for suitable laptops or recommendations on stores where I can obtain quotes that would meet these needs.

  • New $500 laptops are going to take 10 minutes to boot.

Second hand business laptops with a usb hub with ethernet are your best bet.

If it doesn't have to be portable, looking at a refurbished desktop would also be worthwhile.

As usage is minimal, chances are you'd likely want to tweak the settings for updates to prevent disturbances.

  • Honest question - does it need to be a laptop if it's hooked up to scoreboard screen via HDMI?

You can get some very decent miniPCs that would be perfect for the task - and no concerns about bad batteries etc - but obviously don't have a screen. You could also get these working with one or two "portable screens" that are shared around for any setup time you need a second screen?

    eg;
N100 mini PC - currently $239 on amazon, including win 11 pro

14" low res or 15.6 FHD portable screens (if you need one or two during boot/setup time). Both are about $100 today, but I"m sure you can get better deals on aliexpress if you were happy with their returns policy.

having used similar systems at sporting events, I would recommend sticking with a laptop rather than a desktop.

The people using them will often not be very computer literate and when they malfunction (usually 5 minutes before the game starts!) and there is nothing on the display you don't want to be stuffing around with external monitors etc etc…

    Simplicity is key

I agree a refurbished business laptop with warranty may be a better option than a cheap and nasty new one, and will probably last longer

Is the boot time the only concern at the moment? If they are still in good nick, grab a cheap ssd and see how your existing ones work with a ssd instead of spinning rust.

In built ethernet requirement is going to restrictive

agreed - a laptop with hdmi output would be best suited, possibly chuck a 4G/5G data dongle into it so you can remote into the laptop if they need support. If you need a full windows o/s then I'd recommend google 'tiny 11' and install that - it's a legit windows 11 cut down with bloated processes and apps removed and can run in less than 8GB storage and just 2GB of RAM but more importantly it RUNS FASTER because all the bloat is removed. You can still add in components / services if you need them. There are lots of <$500 laptops I can see on amazon - I'd recommend finding one you like the look of (probably battery life might be the most important criteria over processor and RAM (especially if running tiny 11)), then go to a local store that has that model and get the hands on feel of it. At worst, buy one from amazon - test it and if you don't like it, return it.

To match what you want will be difficult. But have a look here: https://www.dell.com/en-au/outlet/refurbished-inspiron-15-35…

Whilst this has no Ethernet, has 3 USB Ports, meaning you can use one with an inexpensive adapter: https://www.amazon.com.au/Cable-Matters-Ethernet-Adapter-Sup…

Just an option if you are set on the laptop route. Will have a warranty on it as well.
