Nice work thanks OP. Worked out to 5 cents delivered for me.

  • Can these hold a virus?

That'll be the Ethernet CATCHCOVID19 variant, somewhat less popular these days

+1 for thinking out of the box.
In theory, yes, but very unlikely to be usable: Some energy may be harvested from Ethernet signal, even without active PoE. That energy might be sufficient to power a small chip. However it would need further energy (equal to harvested power) to create an active connection and start communicating.
Not totally impossible, but AFAIK, not in the reach of existing technology.

  • I'm getting the minimum spend error.. i could get 2 but for $1.50.. but prefer 1 for $0.02 :D

I used the code on some CAT6 cables.

  • Darn it's under $1USD by like a cent hehe

    • Change to AUD

*I was able to buy 1 cable for $0.02 AUD but subsequent attempts give me minimum purchase amount error

  • Anyone have experience of whether it is generally cheaper to buy individual cables than to make your own?

    • How can it be cheaper to make your own? Do you know how much a reel of cable costs? Do you need 300m of it? What are you going to do with the excess?

You will also have to buy a clamping tool, RJ45 connectors, and ideally a cable tester.

Unless you are going to make 100 cables from it, makes no sense at all.

      • Yes, I am talking about making various different lengths, to wire up a home.. versus buying nearest available lengths ready made. I assume I can live without a tester - if they work, they work, no?

        • ok wow, the reels really are 300m eh? I'd imagined there would be 100m rolls.

        • +1

Fair enough, in that case makes sense to make custom cables.

A tester can help you troubleshoot when cable don't work.

        • +1

You are correct no need for a tester. If it doesn’t work or won’t go full speed chances are you’ve mixed up a wire.

The cheapo $15 eBay/amazon specials work and crimp, but if you’re doing lots of cables I prefer something better (Klein do one which when on sale is good bang for buck).

And yeah, savings really only kick in when you’re doing full 300m or more spools. They 100m spools are priced crappy.

Oh and obviously this is all hypothetical unless you’re a licensed cabler because it’s illegal for home owners to do themselves 🙄

To wire up a home you really don't need a crimper since most wall plates I've seen use push down terminals. Strictly all you need is the cable, wall plates then one of those cheap yellow sleeving stripper/push down tools.

As per below though, under the nanny state, be illegal to run your own cable and install wall plates. Guess not illegal to run trip hazard cables though, hence the need for a crimper?

          • @rhangman: Wow, that is news to me, I had to google it to believe it! What's the logic behind it being illegal to run your own LAN cable, btw? Surely they're no more dangerous than the insides of the computers they connect to, and we're still allowed to wire those up ourselves, right? And in the case of fibre NBN, they're not electrically coupled to telecommunication wiring outside of the home?

@Horacio: It's all about creating work for tradies, who are a protected species in Australia.

              • @Mr Plow: Yes, I've found a thread on whirlpool about it.. seems a fair comment

The answer really comes down to time and experience.
If you know what youre doing, then it can be much cheaper to make your own, especially if youre needing a large amount or variety of cables.

However, if something goes wrong, would you know how to fix it or not make the same mistake again ? With premades, you're paying for assurance, and if you factor in your time in troubleshooting, it may turn out to be cheaper in the end.
