Are Asics shoes any good for weightlifting? Anyone recommend a good pair for lifting with relatively flat heel (slightly elevated OK for squatting).

    • +15

I would not be using runners for weightlifting.

If you really wanted a 'all round sports shoe' get a cross trainer shoe (good for stability), or cross fit shoes. Most people at the gym seem happy to just use converse chucks or vans, but you're not going to get heel elevation with those.

      • Why isn’t this kayano a cross trainer? Asking because I genuinely thought they are/or at least used to be?

        • +1

Because the sole is too squishy and not flat enough

If you get the chance, go somewhere like Rebel and compare the Kayano to Nike Metcon and Reebok Nano

        • +4

These have too much cushion. Something soft = unstable.

You'd want the opposite - max stability for cross train.

      • I’d add that with a $200 budget you could probably get Chuck Taylors and Reebok Floatride Energy when they’re on sale, if you’re happy to use two seperate shoes for lifting and cardio

      • -1

You don't want any heel elevation doing squats, it puts you off balance.

        • +1

Specialist squat shoes have heels. The problem with these is they are too squishy for lifting weighs.

    • +10

For mainly gym use i'd recommend Nike metcons or Reebok Nanos.

    • +6

Anything with a foamy compressible heel is useless for weightlifting. Not only are you going to wreck the foam in short order, the foam doesn't compress evenly which messes up your stability during lifts. Asics make a weightlifting shoe, the 727, but it's not widely available. Lifting barefoot is fine, as are a cheap pair of Vans (solid rubber sole), purpose built weightlifting shoes are best and can be cheap on clearance, but expensive otherwise.

      • Thanks @SquirtyBumhole for the detailed, informative response. Aside from the usual vans and converse recommendations, can you recommend any other decent weightlifting shoe?

        • +2

weightlifting shoe as in a squat shoe with raised heel, or weighlifting shoes as in shoes suitable for general gym lifting activities? As above, metcons or Nanos are good as general shoes, not huge with the stability but not terrible; however they are also good for more mobile activities like sled pushes or skipping or whatever you do along those lines.

If you want more stability (which reduces mobility, so good for lifting but not good for moving) then look at Avancus apex power shoes.

          • @dtc: Would also add the Metcon 8’s really suck for running, moreso than the previous two versions. Only run in them for very short sprints. I don’t have the 9’s (yet) but it’s probably the same.

One last thing - in my experience the Reebok Nanos run a bit more narrow than the Metcons. So if your feet are a bit on the wider side, avoid or at least try them on first.

            • @Belts: Yeah, I wouldn’t jog in them but you can use them for shuttle runs or burpees or skipping etc (or short warm up on the treadmill); the more specialist weight shoes are much stiffer and not really much use for any of that stuff.

              • @dtc: Yep. Normal HIIT stuff.

    • I just remove the shoes during squats and dead lift.

I’m a fan of the Nike Metcons and I’ve rocked a few pairs now. They’ve got lift, great stability and they’re a solid shoe all around. Nike are doing 10% cash back through Cashrewards so that brings them down to $180.

    • I wear them as I like to finish a workout with a run. I don't do super heavy lifts these days so it's not a problem. If I did start getting back into that style of training though I'd just take my shoes off for those sets.

These'll be fine for 90% of casual weightlifters.

    • Go for hiking boots.

    • +1

You should never squat with a shoe that has any form of cushioning, such as runners, as some of the power in your squat is going to be absorbed into that cushioning and it also feels like you are squatting on marshmallows.

Proper squatting / weight lifting shoes have no such cushioning or if you lift at home, barefoot is great too.

That said, these are one of the best running shoes you could buy, would be a total waste to then use them for anything but running. It's like buying a Ferrari to do the school run.

How is everyone's feeling of shopback? I often use Cashrewards. Is their service reliable as the shopback requires credit card to be stored in account? I am trying to avoid saving a credit card details these days. Cashrewards can use Paypal. Thanks

    • +1

No, you don't need to store any credit card in ShopBack for it to work.

I used ShopBack before I even knew about CashRewards and it's been pretty good experience for me

      • I mean you need to store a credit card in order to payout the rewards? Or we don't need to?? I confused. Eg do I have a choice to select paypal when I am claiming my rewards? Thanks

        • +1

You can select Paypal when you withdraw your approved cashback. But you'll need to store your Westpac card detail and use it for payment if you want to get the additional 15% cashback bonus. Cashrewards used to have something like this with ANZ too.

I’d downvote is overpriced and way to expensive I’ve had these before for $150

    • +4

Whenever it was $150, I missed that :(

I'm pretty happy paying $156 for it now though, cause I was nearly paying the full price a few days ago!

      • lol dam i just paid $160 for some kayano 28s

        • they are probably better than these tbh

  • Wow 30 for $196 .
That’s like one for everyday of the month .

    • I liked it mate. I'm upvoting despite all. 🙂

Spend of around $165 to cap cashback using the Westpac offer (stacks for extra $25) for total of $65 cashback.

  • Awesome - just ordered! I have been waiting to replace my 28s since Christmas so this was perfect!

  • Is the cashback $40 per account or per transaction? Looking to het 2 pairs of shoes if I can get cashback on both.

  • Nice thanks

  • Great deal! Can I buy two pairs over two seperate transacations and get cashback on both?

    • I am keen to know this as well

  • $40 Shopback registered almost instant :)

  • My purchase still hasn't been tracked after an hour.

  • bought from Rebel Black Friday deal few months now very happy with this one

  • It's good to see these highly coverted sneakers at a reasonable price, and with a relatively wide range of colour options. Full RRP is egregious gouging; they definitely cost far less than $280 AUD to manufacture.

  • +1

    Gt-2000 looks similar, $30 cheaper and 30g lighter…

  • I remember these kayaonos used to cost around $100 when on sale, damn its so expensive now

  • Are these worn out pretty quick if I was to wear them just for walking as well?

Not sure about carrying a pair of shoes around :/

    • +1

They are relatively durable. Should get well over 1000km if you are average weight and just walking.

    • Having putting similar mileage on my kayanos and ultraboosts, I'd have to say the kayanos wear out quicker. E.g., the sole of the kayano has become super slippery, whereas the continental rubber on the ultraboost can still provide traction.

  • why are there more colour way in 4E than 2E width, i wish they have more colour way in 2E

    • They always do boring colours in the wider shoes. Share some vibrancy please!

  • I got these recently, way more comfy than Ultraboost or NMDs.

  • +2

Isn't 29s much better than 30s ..at least for over-pronators. That's the whole purpose of buying Kayanos..otherwise go for Asics Nimbus

    • Not really. If i was neutral (which i am), id still prefer the kayanos…the better question is, would i rather spend extra for the superblasts.

    • I had the 28, 29, and just bought this 30 version

So far 28 fits me the best but mine is so worn-out (ran over 1000kms and wore it as daily shoes also). I don't use my 29 a lot, waiting to see 30 is better for me

  • How many KMs would you get for such a shoe?

  • I placed order using shopback master card…. And registered shopback today only. Will I be eligible for Cashback ?

    • why not cancel and reorder properly?

  • How is this compared to the Hoka One One Bondi?

    • +1

I have both (as they both have wide models)… there's more heel-toe drop in the Kayanos (10mm vs 4mm for the Hoka), which is noticeable for comfort if you have arch problems (plantar fasciitis etc). Neither shoe is particularly hard-wearing though.

      • Any chance you've compared to a NB 1080v13 (also available in wide)

        • No, sorry. I went back to the Kayanos after trying two pairs of Hokas (the first didn’t last long).

          • @cletus75: I tried the Hoka Cliftons, they last longer for me and more comfortable. Last pair of Kayanos was the 27s for me.

  • How long does the base deal go for? The 30% off without the cashback?

    • On their T&C page, it says "offer ends 29/01/2024 at 11:59pm AEDT"

  • Just got the shoes today, shipping was quicker than expected! It fits me really well! Will need to try it for a run soon!

  • Does anyone know what will happen to the cashback if I had to change for another size in the store?

    • +1

I can answer that - had to change to half size up due to toe box - went in store and they had my size, but had to refund the existing shoes and purchase the new size - they said there was no other way due to their "system", even though it was the same colour - obviously, I would lose the Cashback, so I just got the refund and walked out

      • I’ll have to do the same then. Thanks for sharing

  • Never registered the sale for me on Shopback :(

    • Mine was tracked instantly. I just used the webview inside ShopBack app when making my order

  • I am now a few hundred kms into the 30s and they are ok but not great. My ankle is always a little sore after a long run in them. 28s and 29s were much better.
