How to Sell Steam Games in Inventory?

A long time ago I bought a few games for a friend on Steam, but they never ended up using them. They're still in my inventory. Is there any way to sell them, and if so, what's the best way of doing it? I tried putting up on an ad on FB Marketplace but haven't had any interest yet.

    what games are they?

    • Skyrim (regular version), Portal 2, and Trine 2 Complete Story.

Considering the small risk to the buyer and the sale price of those games, you're definitely going to struggle selling them.

At best they're worth a couple of bucks each. I bought Trine 2 complete for about $3 9 years ago. Portal 2 was $1.50 over Christmas and, for the amount of content involved, there's no real point buying the base version of Skyrim considering all the DLC and enhanced versions around. I'd just find a way to give them away.

  • Suggestions:

    • lower prices
    • try eBay
    • try some of the forums where people trade games (eg. Reddit)
    • consider value vs effort and leave them in your inventory
    • Thanks. I don't know any Reddits where people trade, can you point me to some? Also what's the fair price to ask for the above listed games?

      • I've never personally bothered so I'm not aware of specific communities. I'd suggest looking at trade histories to price games or posting and seeing what's on offer.

I occasionally just give away extra keys or games to friends.

i doubt anyone will pay for them to be honest

    • No they're not keys, they're games in my inventory (not library). And why can't I sell them?

  • Steam gift games are collectibles now for many so you should join collectors groups on Steam. There are lots of them like this one.
You can also make an account on barter to trade or sell them as it's an established platform for this kind of stuff as is Steamtrades, although barter has moderators. Been using both for many many years without issue.

You could put them up for sale on grey market storefronts like Kinguin who take a commission but you have protection and is how most offload their leftover game keys from bundles which the Henny Penny's will tell you is "illegal" but is no different from selling them yourself on ebay or marketplace or here on Ozbargain. It's all grey market but it's what the majority do all day, every day, everywhere.

All that said, do your homework and know the market and be realistic about pricing. If you can't be bothered with all that effort, you could as suggested, just lower the prices to get rid of them quickly or keep them yourself and let their value increase which is what I do until I see the price soar. Feel free to message me if you have any questions.

    • Thanks for the info - the first link you provided says you need 750 games on Steam to join?? Are they freakin serious?

      • That is just one example. That group isn't a selling group, but a group full of collectors where you can find buyers but it seems it now has a minimum to join. I generally trade outside of Steam groups as I am already established, so I am not sure which groups are relevant now as they tend to change.

As I said, there are many groups for this kind of thing on Steam, so you should search through the Steam groups for steam gift collectors/completionists as new ones appear and old ones can close.

Personally, I'm not really interested in Steamgifts and most tend to just linger in my inventory, but you can always message me directly if you decide you'd prefer to just trade them for game keys.

  • What about the OzB classifieds?

Less likely to move them here but you're already on the site, and it's free.
