70

The Sovol SV04 is a large IDEX (Independent Dual Extrusion) 3D printer available for US$319 (A$483.40) instead of its regular price of US$559. It has a build size of 300mm x 300mm x 400mm and an Independent Dual Direct Drive Metal Extruder (IDEX) system, which allows you to print two colours or two different materials and without manual filament changes and reduces purging during color swaps compared to other systems. This makes it suitable for printing support structures with different materials for example.

Key Specifications:

  • Build Size: 300mm x 300mm x 400mm
  • Layer Resolution: 0.1mm
  • Positioning Accuracy: X/Y 0.012mm Z 0.001mm
  • Supported Print Materials: PLA, TPU, TPE, HIPS, ABS, PETG, WOOD, PC, PA, PVA, ASA
  • Print Speed: 20~120mm/s (suggested 60mm/s)
  • Stock Nozzle Diameter: 0.4 mm
  • Extruder Type: Direct Drive
  • Operational Extruder Temperature: Max 260°C
  • Hotbed: Magnetic Flexible Plate, Max 100°C
  • Mainboard: 32-bit TMC2209 Silent Driver Board
  • Connectivity: SD Card or Data Cable

The printer also features dual Z lead screws for stability, filament detection, print recovery, and a flexible magnetic build plate. Additionally, it comes with two purge buckets to collect oozing filament from idling print heads and to wipe nozzles before printing again. It works like an ordinary 3D printer in single mode. If you want to use both extruders there is the dual mode. And to print the same object twice on the left and right side of the build plate, there are the duplicate and mirror modes.

    'Times they are a changin'
Bambu has heralded an explosive change in the 3D printing market.

3 years ago when I bought my second Ender (3v2) this may have been relevant.
Suggest pooling your funds and setting aside some $$$$ for something bulletproof.

    • a1 or p1s?

      • +1

        P1S

        • cheers do you reckon overall its a better printer then the a1?

          • +1

@bob98: Got both, P1S is faster but the A1 probably makes the time up in multi-color prints as it changes filament quicker.

Both print amazing though, my A1 is running off a toothbrush holder at the moment and it looks schmicko!

            • @XeKToReX: thanks man its my 1st printer ever im usually a buy once cry once person but the p1s is making it hard with no touch screen. one of the harder decisions ive had to make for a while

              • @bob98: I bought a Biqu Panda Touch screen for my 2 machines, waiting for the delivery in a couple of weeks!

To be honest, I touch the P1S' screen only ever in the event of an issue, most of which are a problem with a model I designed or using random build plates. I wouldn't put it into the no basket purely because of the screen.

The only reason I would buy the X1C over the P1s even would be the camera, A1 and P1 cameras are garbage.

                • @XeKToReX: Thanks mate was a hard decision this morning but I went for the a1 with ams got 6kg of fillament spare belts spare nozzles and a few other shits and bits for $1150 shipped. When the new models for the p series come out I’ll sell the a1 and purchase. I also got panda touch for $29 usd it says it’ll work with the a1. Hopefully one day I’ll have a few printers and get to use the panda to its full extent

                    @bob98: Congrats!

Would suggest a pack of Microfibre cloths and a bottle of IPA to keep the PEI bed nice and clean.

A lot of people say using dishwashing liquid but I haven't needed to so far, I just give it a wipe with IPA between prints and it's been great.

                    • @XeKToReX: thanks mate added to the list of things i need to buy

agree, i bought the P1S in the amazon deal with AMS. Now I have two ender 3 v2 sitting around collecting dust .Being able to print from my phone without needing to setup octoprint, autobed levelling etc. Yes you can add mods to the creality ender 3 to do all this, but it is alot of effort for newbies like me.

      • Arrgggg just missed out on this deal, kicking myself

      • Thats a broad statement, a better way of saying it would be 'It' can be a lot effort for some newbies'.
I thought the multitude of info and step by step guides made it easy TBH. The only mod required was a $60 BTT Pi4.

Had one, overall a good printer but eventually went to bambu x1c for ease of use.

Sovol pros - cheap, sturdy, can make very nice prints even with abs/petg. Lots of customisable parts and an octopi power user delight. Great intro to 3d printing if you want to learn lots. Doesn't scare people with big noisy pooping/priming and is material efficient. Can print mirror/dual with ease and speed.

Cons - Don't give up after it fails a print. It needs a lot of fixing/tweaking/setup between prints and even then can print twice exact same conditions and material 1 fail, 1 perfect zero defects. Had a cr10 prior that was much more forgiving. It's just small things first layer faults, spaghetti, blocking, filament extruding from the heat block directly where the nozzle is inserted, tip not clearing models on travel and knocking them, bl touch probe getting sticky. None are unique faults but it just seemed more prone to these and fussier about perfect print conditions than my other printers.

Pro tip, if you can't afford a bambu p1/x1 (which are on a whole different level and amazing) and go for this still excellent printer, get the custom marlin 2.x.x firmware onto this unit on day 1. It fixes a lot of the issues and makes it a much nicer printer to use, adds things like auto tramming, more refined 49 point abl and on the fly print speed and flow rate adjustments.

  • Quite a good price. Got Neptune 4. Like the idea of dual extrusion. Might be my OCD LOL when looking at link and first picture. Blue and yellow/orange filament but the printed is white and orange/yellow.

I've had a Solvol printer for 6 weeks and despite countless hours searching for solutions and about 37 print runs, the printer has not yet successfully completed any model. Given the forums I've been searching through, it would seem that mine is not an uncommon experience. They are not really plug and play. Perhaps other brands are. This is just my experience.

    • Valuable experience, thanks for sharing!

    • What's are symptoms? Does do the first few layers ok and maintain adhesion throughout?

  • Damn I really thought prices on the sale were in AUD after seeing their Aus day FB ad. Was about to correct OP but they stated them selves it's USD.
