Best banking app I've seen by far.

    • +3

It is, threaded payments just make it so much easier to send payments and they work with wise too.

  • +8

I got the card for my wife when she travelled to Europe last year.
    It worked perfectly.
We used it on our recent trip to Indonesia and also on internet purchases.
    I highly recommend it.

    • +7

Didn't know that UP can be used internationally without fees. Thanks for info.

      • +10

Yeah, even ATM withdrawals are free.

        • 😮

        • Just to be clear, Up doesn't charge fees, but ATMs still can. Up doesn't refund those.

      • +7

Yep and you can compare it to other options that are good for travel on the OzBargain wiki here

      • It also has wise integrated, it's actually easier then using the wise app.

Cards are also easy to freeze, cancel and have reissued.

  • +11

Highly recommend this bank for couples wanting joint accounts. Very simple and easy to use, with great spend tracking. Helped my partner become more financially savvy simple by being able to track our spending in a much more clear and concise format.

    • +1

Thanks, cost of living is hurting - might be time to give the wife more visibility

      • Good idea, more accountability

  • +25

Its really nice that this bank gives its own domain email "[email protected]" as a PAYID, wish more banks would do that.

    • Yep, helps identify if you've forgotten to change PayID to your current account and also helps stop PayID fraud since there's no real address to send a fraud email to.

  • +11

    What's up bank?

    • +10

      Nm u?

    • More colours on your screen than Ubank with LESS interest.

  • +4

Why it's the greatest bank in town good sir!

  • +6

I joined UP so that I could link it to GarminPay as the few banks I already bank with are useless and don't offer GarminPay.
Been with UP for a couple of years now and quite impressed with their offerings and support which is rare for one of the smaller banks who don't charge crazy fees.

  • I assume they don’t reimburse all ATM fees and it’s just free at major banks devices and not the DCs and ATMx and such?

    • +1

They won't reimburse ATM operator fees (like the $2 you'll pay at non-bank ATMs here) but they won't charge a fee to withdraw.

    • +1

There's only two companies left with reimbursement on domestic ATM operator fees Macquarie and one other. ING has no operator reimbursement now it's only five and it's the fee they would charge you for using an ATM.

    • Nope. If you don't wanna pay fees, get a Macquarie account and do withdraws via that card. That's what I do!

  • +4

Other question, would this be OK/good for my younger teen student?

Or rather, it seems pretty good does anyone have any experience or other options for younger teen student?

    • +2

Open it and try it out. Close it if you find not suitable.

    • +2

As long as they're over 16 years of age.

These accounts are available only to individuals over 16 years of age for private or domestic use.
      https://up.com.au/product-terms/#key-features

    • +7

I would say its a great bank for your younger teen to use (as long as s/he is over the age of 16). App is very well designed - designed in a way that encourages you to save money. Lots of hidden features around the app as well which makes banking "different".

    • +3

Yes, a teenager would love the app, when compared to every other boring bank app out there.

    • +1

Similar to your question… I wonder how does this compare to the other offer from Westpac (they're giving $50)
Anyone here having both options to be able to provide some feedback?

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/801525

      • Polar opposites. Up have a fantastic app. Westpac one of the worst.

  • +2

Used it in Japan without issue. Great card and by far the best banking app I've used.

Wish they had more products for mortgages and the like, would gladly move over.

    • +2

      They do have mortgages!

      https://up.com.au/home-loans/

But yes I agree, a credit card or other similar offerings would be a nice addition.

      • +1

Ahh they only do OO home loans, not investor loans atm so it's out for me! But hopefully they expand it soon.

        • +5

No need to brag Billy Boy.

  • Got this very recently for an upcoming trip to USA later this year, mostly because of the Citibank Plus to NAB changeover. My wife signed up too and we both got the $10. Hoping it's straightforward enough as we loved Citi for that.

  • If I refer myself, will I get $20?

    • You'll get a knock on the door from the fraud team…

    • Directly to jail. Do not pass Go, do not collect $20

      • -1

I did it 10 times and collected $200

    • FBI open up

  • +10

I use UP for budgeting. Currently have 17 "sub-accounts" for all sorts of fortnightly/monthly/yearly expenses. A portion of our pay is deposited every fortnight and automatically gets siphoned off to all of the sub accounts. Works flawlessly!

    • +1

Yeah. I use the same feature with my dividend payments, to automatically put 70% into my investment saver and 30% into an "income tax" saver.

So if I don't end up with a tax refund at the end of the year I've saved 30% of my dividend income automatically to pay the tax man.

    • Does each sub account have a different account number? Isn’t that annoying with multiple statements?

      • +5

No, it all sits under one 'master' account with BSB/Acc number.
The 'subs' don't have their own BSB/Acc. Any transfer out needs to go via the master account.

        • +2

But you can make it so that transfer from specific contacts/senders are forwarded automatically to a savers account. All my salary deposits go directly to my SALARY savers account, or any money from Centrelink to a different account.

        • No, it all sits under one 'master' account with BSB/Acc number. The 'subs' don't have their own BSB/Acc. Any transfer out needs to go via the master account.

They do have individual BSB/ACC's they're just not visible to the user, your notably see this when you do your tax pre-fill.

  • +3

I opened one account yesterday to take advantage of the no account fees and no atm fees and no international transactions fees. It is good but I was disappointed that you cannot do anything without a mobile. The desktop web experience is pretty absent. All transactions happen on mobile. Also the interest rate is pretty low. I am trying upbank instead. I want a bank with no fees on international transactions.

    • +13

That's fair, but to counter, the mobile app is light years ahead of the competition in terms of features.

I've never once felt, "hmm, really wish I was on a browser to do this" as the app is just so powerful.

    • I want a bank with no fees on international transactions.

Look at the options on the OzBargain wiki

    • Website is supposed to be in progress to be delivered at some point. It's on their "development tree"

      • +2

It's been there since the beginning and is not a priority. Up as always maintained their digital first mobile first.

        • Yes, but most things on the tree have been there since the beginning, and almost all of them have been delivered. I think there were a few travel related ones that were discarded during the pandemic, but that's it

    • Oh damn this might be a deal-breaker as I do most of my banking at home on desktop

Anyone know if the mobile app prevents login if your Android device is rooted?

      • +1

It's definitely targeted towards people that prefer having their banking as automated as possible. I thought I'd suffer without desktop, but once you set up your pay splitting, recurring payments, it tends to just run itself.

Having your available balance automatically deduct any upcoming payments before your next pay is a game changer.

  • +3

For anyone floating around this thread, that might be interested late last year I launched an unofficial up related community on discord you can check it out here

  • For anyone who has used it overseas, how is their exchange rate ? In the past, Citi was the best where you can 'buy' and save it in the applicable currency account. Can Up do the same thing ? Or it will be withdrawn from AUD account at that time of withdrawal ? If we use it as overseas purchase, wouldn't it better using 28degrees card ?

    • +2

For anyone who has used it overseas, how is their exchange rate?

It's the Mastercard conversion rate of the day.

In the past, Citi was the best where you can 'buy' and save it in the applicable currency account. Can Up do the same thing?

No Up does not allow you to convert hold foreign currency.

Or it will be withdrawn from AUD account at that time of withdrawal?

Correct it's taken from your account conversion is done by Mastercard with the daily rate for the currency for the country you're in.

If we use it as overseas purchase, wouldn't it better using 28degrees card?

The only difference between that product and this is one's a credit card one's a debit card, so your money versus banks money. Both use the Mastercard conversion rate of the day.

You can compare the two products on the OzBargain wiki here

      • Thanks, Mate.

  • +2

Easily the best banking app out there. Highly recommend for your day to day account.

  • I love UP, been using it for years! Wondering if anyone knows of a resource of which overseas banks' ATMs charge an operator fee and which don't? I realise this can be tested in the country of travel itself but it'd be great to have this handy…

    • The closest thing is this wiki article on Whirlpool.

    • There's a big list here sort of maintained by Revolut users, but should apply to all cards.
      https://community.revolut.com/t/the-ultimative-free-atm-with…

Just note sometimes there are differences between how ATMs treat Visa vs MC (like Japan)

      • Could I get an invite / referral?

        • You can click on the referral generator, or are you talking about Revolut referral?

If so, there is a referral generator for them too, however they might be outdated, since Revolut updates their referral links monthly

        • Use the referral system on the deals page four Up here for $10

If you're referring to a referral for Revolut here but after it popped off here a few years ago, I don't think anyone's going to be able to give you a referral that will pay you money, most only pay the other party.

  • only problem is they cannot change the display name on your payid, always the full name

  • +1

I really liked UP Bank the app is the best banking app I've seen. I'd use it more if I was not using Bano. The cashback rewards on Bano are just too good, even out preforms my credit card.

    • Interesting! Which cashback rewards are your faves and how much usually? Looking to move from CBA but we do make use of their cashback offers at Myer, Coles, and some other big box stores. Usually it's something like $10 off $100 spend but tends to vary a bit

      • +3

I agree with Kyle-K, I just top up money into Bano from my main bank as I need it. I get a % cashback on each transaction and I have the option to split the bill with a friend (which I do with my partner) this rewards each person a random 1-20% back on the split amount. Sounds untrue, but my partner and I have easily receive over 2k cashback each using Bano so far, we split all household bills for the split rewards.

I always use Bano + either Shopback / CashRewards or my Employee's program RewardGateway (which ever gives the best $ reward!😄)

        • How do you go about using Bano?

Looks like there's a sign up fee ($150), and a monthly fee ($15)?

Or do you not get charged fees somehow?

        • Thanks for bringing Bano up to my attention, just got a couple qns..

Do they have PAYID/Fast transfer in/out?

Also does “bills” basically mean any transaction that has been paid via Bano card? What about like using that to pay for a Colesworth grocery, can I still split that kinda “bill” and get cashback?

          TIA ,🙏

          • +1

@noelhoi: Yep, PayID in/out. I use Google wallet from my ME Bank to Bano to 're-charge' when I need more funds.
Also yep, bill is any transaction. I split Coles with my partner both get a couple of dollars back (caps at $10 each)

            • @Cludo: I’ve been using HSBC for the instant 2% cb which is also displayed in txn history immediately, how does Bano compare to that?

              • @noelhoi: Your transaction cashback comes in after a few days.
The split bill reward is as soon as the other participant(s) pay either split

                • @Cludo: Ok so they have 2 systems going on?
                  A. 1.8% cashback on any bills no max spend
                  B. Up to 20% extra cashback when splitting bills

Am I reading that right? ty for the info 🙏

                  • @noelhoi: That's it, not 100% sure on the "no max spend" part though.
But really, the money is mostly from the split bill system.

                    • @Cludo: I doubt you will get the full 1.8% as well, pretty sure it is 'up to'

            • @Cludo: So how would you split a coles "bill"?

Do you have to pay half each at the checkout, and then the balance with your partner's card?

              • +2

@movieman: No mate, thats done after the transaction in the app.
I go to Coles alone, buy the weekly shop and pay on my phone.
get home and in the app click split bill, enter my partners name and then they just click pay on their app.

Rewards make it straight to her account.

    • +1

Not exactly something I would recommend for all your money. It's a financial service does not give you access to the government guarantee on deposit as they're not a license bank.

      • Which one?

        Up? Or Bano?

        • +1

Up is owned by Bendigo Bank and covered as any other bank institution is, with the government securing upto $250,000 per institution (e.g if i have a CBA and a Up account, I get $250k insured via CBA and $250 via Up) Bano is not a bank and thus is not covered by the government's FCS scheme.

  • +2

Just wanted to join the crowd of people saying how good this banking app is. Definitely made my ability to save so much better with all the countless cool features. I actually read every app update notes because it's genuinely exciting to read the features they work on and release.

  • +2

Damn, I have 5 referral clicks on OzBargain but not a single referral in my Up account. One from two days ago, I checked my referral link and it is correct, any ideas?

    • +1

Yea me too, I have 4 clicks and not a single sign of any bonus :S

    • +3

There is nothing wrong, this is standard for referrals on Ozbargain. Most users click just to see requirements or change their mind. It also probably doesn't help that you can't directly sign up from desktop which is where a lot of users would be clicking from.
Up credits new sign ups instantly from my experience.

  • Guess they’ll never do $20 again :S

  • +1

    Best app bank ever!!

  • +1

Highly recommend this app. Life-changing for me and my partner (no exaggeration).

  • Just signed up as a backup account/international transactions account. still going to keep with Bank Australia for my main banking needs but I will say that the Up app is great!

  • The way this app is designed particularly for people who live together but want separate personal bank accounts is really great. Support has been really good as well when I have queried something. My only bugbear is its impossible for someone (like granny) to deposit eg birthday money into this account in person. Even if you go into a Bendigo Bank or an AusPost branch, they cant put money in this account - really only impacts the older generation who don't have access to internet banking, so I just get Granny to post it instead and take the risk.

    • Always need an account from one of the big4 even if your main account is the neo/digital bank for this such situation.

I'm using ubank but sometimes need to use my account from either ANZ or NAB for withdrawing large amount of cash.

  • +1

Hi guys, I am unable to sign up with up . I'm an I international student whose been in Australia for almost 11 months and I can't sign up. I currently have a Australian p2 license.

After contacting up support by sending my full name and phone number I get this : Thanks so much for reaching out and doing your very best to join Up.

During the account creation process, we're required to verify your identity against several Australian Government databases. Unfortunately we haven't been able to verify your identity.

I'm very sorry, but we can't create an account for you.

    Thanks,
    Up Support

Anyone knows how I can register?

  • Does the app now have a logout button or is it just my Samsung 21u?

  • Signing up now but where could I find people with their invite/referral codes?

    • You need to click on the referral generator at top of this post first, then signup via the referral link
