ASUS Zenfone 10 5G 8GB/256GB $1039.20 + Delivery ($0 in-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

210

One of the few compact flagships. High price but good value for the right customer.

Perfect for those looking for a stock Android experience with variety of fully optional Asus-exclusive features such as rounded icon quick panel, back button on right hand side, fully customisable colour calibration to name a few. Also support's Asus ROG Phone's gaming panel feature suite. You can of course leave the experience 100% stock Android.

The only downside I can think of is the minimum 2 year software support.

Source: Used to own a Zenfone 9.

I can think of another downside: It's extremely expensive, with no clear benefits over phones that can be purchased for less than half the price.

    • Battery life and processor speed vs the cheapo phones.

    • +1

True, I'll never understand the value proposition and target market they're going for with these. 2 yrs of updates, mid tier specs for a flagship price? What gives?

      • +1

        What's mid-tier about it's specs? Snapdragon 8 gen 2 is mid tier?

        • -1

Considering it was released November 2022, yeah

          • +1

@dsiritz: So…you expect SD 8 Gen 3 on a phone released 6 months ago? ZenFone 10 was announced in June 2023 and available from July 2023. SD 8 Gen 3 was released in Oct 2023 after the phone was released.

And for this hypothetical phone to be selling at close to 1000 bucks today?

Yeah…this is not that. Good luck finding that. And shelling out at least another 500 on top.

            • @hippo2s: I just don't see the value proposition for the phone as a whole. Other phones have specific selling points. I did have good luck finding my pixel 8 pro for $840 👍

              • +1

@dsiritz: Good on ya. I was just trying to explain. There is value proposition for this model due to its combination of features.

Just because it does not fit your needs/give you what you value, doesn't mean it's bad value.

And at the time it was released it was flagship SOC. But it's dropping in price in accordance with there being a newer chip (SD 8 gen 3) so you can argue it is mid-tier but it's certain not flagship price anymore.

Anyway yes it suits a specific demographic user, you (and I) are not it. Doesn't mean it's bad value.

    • These series of phones are great for the form factor and specifications. My wife needs an upgrade (she had the zen 7 from memory), and this is certainly on the list, of not the leading contender. Just need it to be sub $1k I think.

      • go for the Lenovo thinkphone

        • Different size/target market

          • @hippo2s: Yeah, . i wanted a small phone so i got the ZF8.
Then it died and i realised that for a little bit bigger i could get a phone that just works.

i got burnt badly with the ZF8 that im not recommending asus to anybody.
From crappy on-screen finger print, to randomly unlocking in pocket since their proximity sensor is crap, to then the sudden death.
i'm glad i bought from jbhifi and got my money back.

            • @FoxJump: Fair enough. Just didn't understand the suggestion of ThinkPhone as it's not really a competitor to ZenFone 10.

    • Same can be said with other phones too. S23/24, Pixel etc.

All depends on what you are after. What is in favour of ZenFone (for me) are

      1. Small form factor
      2. SoC / spec
      3. 3.5mm jack (you pretty much can't get this anymore)
      4. Battery life

You might value other things, such as value for money, Camera, OS support…etc

  • is this using stock google apps like the dialer/contacts? the asus version is way better as it has a native/in-house block/call recording unlike the google version which is basic and lets the other party know you're recording. ive been into the chinese market as they dont conform to google and all i have to do is install play store/google apps if i need it while having the ability to do REAL call recording/blocking

    • my zf8 had real call recording.

    • Don't you legally need to inform the other person that the phone call is being recorded? It might only be if you call them.

    • It has both. You can always get the google versions on any Android phone from play store anyway.

If you use the Zenfone dialler it does indeed have real voice recording. You can start recording without informing the other party.

another downside: asus fkced up their zenfone 8 with autodestruct before 2yo

  • SD card slot?

  • "Clearance"… when it's $400, we'll talk

    • I think the clearance badge is an error. The phone was released 6 months ago, the next Zenfones should release August ish again so a while to go.

  • FWIW, my wife went from a OnePlus to a Samsung S23 last year, excited to see the fuss about a big flagship phone. After pulling her hair out in frustration at how slow the face unlock was (and being told by friends and sales staff that is just normal) and the lack of hardware fingerprint that might compensate for that, she sold it and bought a Zenfone 9, specifically for those features. She loves it so much I think she would save it before me in a fire.

I'm in a similar boat where I have a Pixel 5, and am dreading the day it dies because flagship phones are just getting bigger and losing the features I want. I'll definitely consider ASUS offerings next time I need to, along with other mid-range brands.

Most phone reviewers focus on camera quality and processor speed, and they are nice to have but not as important to some people as quality of life features. That's why phones like this have a niche between budget phones and top-end flagships.

    • If you like your Pixel 5, I highly recommend the Pixel 7a or 7 even. Great solid phone, definitely the best stock android experience too.

      • Thanks, am wary of the lack of a hardware (non-in-glass) fingerprint reader, but heard it's not too bad.

What I like about the pixel is the size. I also liked my Samsung 10e before it, until an update made Google Photos annoying to use, so I sold it.

Last year in January, the Asus Zenfone 9 price dropped from $999 to $899. Similarly, now the price has reduced by approximately 10%. Last year October, it was decreased by 46%. We may need to wait until October to see the price closer to the $500 mark. I believe for those wanting the phone now, it's a good deal. I am going to get the phone now.

Again rumours are next year Asus may release two phones regular and Ultra.

Unless they've fixed the proximity sensor since the Zenfone 9, expect it to unlock regularly unlock itself in your pocket.

    • I "Fixed" this in my ZF8 by disabling a lot of features, and always making sure the phone was facing away from my leg in my pocket.
Even then, the power button was so sensitive, that i got a rhinoshield case and then swapped its power button button with a usb-c cover -trimmed to size and superglued.

the proximity sensor in the ZF8 was a POS. Meanwhile, thinkphone is fine.
