Guess who is stocking up on Australia's worst tuna brand :)
I'll buy whatever's cheapest on the day.
Is it really worth it to save a couple of dollars? The more people show that they have a conscious when making purchasing decisions, the more value businesses will put on social and environmental responsibility.
If consumers continue to seem like they don't care, businesses won't change their behaviour and we will all be worse off for it.
This should probably be a sticky.

wow thought John West was one of the best brands, wont be buying anymore.
Great post.
Sustainability is very important.
I will also add that I have had this week, John West , Greenseas and Safcol.
Safcol was in Olive oil, the other two were just vegetable oil.
But the big thing was Safcol was 70% Tuna, John West 59% Tuna and Greenseas was only 51% Tuna!! All were 95gram tins and all the same flavour - chilli. What a big difference.
So don't just go by price (even though on the weekend Safcol and John west were the same price at Woolies.)
John West has a terrible fishing policy.
"When John West’s suppliers go fishing, 10% of the catch is made up of important marine life like sharks, rays, baby tuna and turtles, known as bycatch.""John West catches the equivalent of 10 million cans of sharks, rays, baby tuna and turtles a year by refusing to ban FADs." (fish aggregating devices - FADs).
Go for Safcol or Greanseas, they're not much more expensive. I often see Greanseas at Woolworths for $1 each, or 5 for $4 (or possibly 4 for $5, I can't remember).
So from what you have written are you suggesting that the Tuna that is processed by John West is mixed with other marine creatures (sharks, rays, turtles etc)?
If that is indeed the case I'll have to think twice about purchasing their products again.
10% of the catch isn't tuna… not 10% of the content.
Has anyone actually looked into what happens with the 10% of non-tuna? Perhaps it goes to pet food. I don't really see a problem.
Fairly sure it's just dumped overboard to make space for more tuna.
Good on you! Thanks for that, I'll be buying Safcol for the next few years then (at least until 2015 when the other companies claim they will improve).
I always made sure I bought Australian brands labeled "dolphin safe", but if I can do a bit more, that's great. Cheers!Look for 'pole and line caught Skipjack Tuna'.
Pole and line is more sustainable because of a much much lower by-catch. Plus, it employs more people because it is more labour intensive and the boats tend to be smaller.
If Safcol is able to do this and maintain competitive prices, surely John West being the biggest seller of Tuna in Australia can do the same?
Yes, I've seen the ads. :) I naively assumed a large portion of the Dolphin safe brands that are not line caught came from the Pt Lincoln tuna farms. Not sure where they end up?
I'm all for bargains, but not at the expense of nature. I'll stock up on Oreos from this catalogue (and really hope they don't have palm oil!)Nabisco is making these in China now. There's more to worry about than just palm oil.
protein is protein brahs, who cares.
Won't be any protein left in the ocean if 'business as usual' persists… brah
too bad the brain isn't a muscle eh?
with tuna, the rule is to buy the cheapest tuna you can stomach. i.e home brand is only 2.99 for 500g. I can't taste the difference and 2 cans last me a week at work for lunch.
The problems of the poor….on the other hand what is better note II or iphone black 1st world problems
I usually buy the coles tuna, 5 for $4, I think similar fishing technique to john west
Time to restock up on Oeros :D
Made in China
Memo to OP. Check with greenpeace before you post next time.
You eat 1kg a tuna at lunch! Holy crap!
Cool, stocking up on Sanitarium So Good.
Sanitarium is owned by the Seventh Day Adventist church and as such the company doesn't pay tax on profits.
O.o…. So I should make my own milk?
Are Sanitarium the only brand of soy milk?
