Looking for Budget nbn 25

I have looked at all the comparison sites, and at this stage I am just so confused and looking for some opinions from my fellow OzBargainers.

My current provider is TPG on their lowest plan and I have a HFC connection. But hoping to shave off a bit on the monthly outgoings as I am really struggling. I only need a 25 plan to meet my needs. I don't do any online gaming, but I do a fair bit of streaming. Nothing though that has ever been a problem from TPG, but if I switch I don't want latency issues (normal streaming, not ultra HD)

I've been looking at Flip and Spintel as my super budget options, and Leaptel and Superloop as my quality options.

Cost is absolutely important, but I am open to hearing about problems I may not be aware of if I go with the more budget options.

What are people experiences or advice on these providers for NBN 25?

Are you by any chance a CBA customer?

I am not a CBA customer unfortunately.

  • Do you have a good mobile phone reception?

    • I might have to share my internet with a housemate soon, so I wouldnt want to use my phone as a hotspot. Sorry I should have mentioned in my post.

      • Go with the budget option for now but maybe look for something more suitable if you get a housemate.
Just charge your housemate for half of the cost.

Get a phone and put Felix and use as a hotspot? 20/20 Vodafone network.

    • I might get a housemate later, so a phone hotspot might not be the best option. But thank you for considering other options for me.

      • Felix you can cancel any time and pay until end of the month.

    I don't want latency issues

latency won't affect streaming movies, it's mainly important for online gaming.

    • Thank you. I wasn't sure about that.

Just switched over to Leaptel and have been impressed with them so far after being with TPG for a million years. They've got a 6 month deal for $44.95 for 25/10 which must be about as low as you'll get. Can always switch to one of the cheaper options once the 6mo is up. I was cutover from TPG to Leaptel within an hour, just gotta make sure you've got a modem/router that works with most ISPs.

    • This is good information to know. Thank you!

  • If you have good wifi reception where you are get one of these mobile broadband devices. You can have many devices connected to it at the same time eg. your houseshare person's devices as well as yours… I've been using a 4G one of these for years and have NO TROUBLE - but my wifi reception is good here. When the NBN crashes (for others) I still have internet access. Look on Coles and Woolies websites for devices on special. Then you just need a SIM only deal with whoever you go with.

    • What plans are there for this? I would definitely consider this as an option.

      • Look at the website eg. Optus/Telstra/etc for their SIM only deals. Once you have your device you just need a SIM deal. Buy the device outright first. Also known as Mobile Broadband deals.
I am with Optus and have a $50 for 150GB per month deal. Never use anywhere near that many GBs and I am streaming and on internet for many hours per day.

  • Have had my Dad with Flip for over 12 months. They’ve been good and customer service/problem solving was excellent. He just does basic movie streaming and app updates. Can recommend them.

    • Good to know. I was a little worried they might be too budget.

You might find it cheaper going for discounted NBN 50 deals and switching every 6 months.

  • Any idea how much data you use per month?

    • I can't find the login for the TPG account as it is under my fathers name (who has just passed), so no idea on data at the moment. As soon as I find all of his passwords I'll be checking up on all of that.

If you go with the mobile hotspot, over 12m you'll average maybe $25 for 42GB per month (Kogan XL). I do tech support for some seniors with this setup but it only works because they hardly use any data.

        • OK. I'll keep that in mind for when I get to see data usage. I have a feeling though, I'll be needing more. I do stream a considerable amount, and with a possible second person I might just be better off going with NBN. But I wont rule it out until I see the data.

        • 42GB per month

Won't be able to stream many movies in the month though…

  • usb tether a phone into a USB equipped router with a Felix Mobile SIM might be a good plan,

half price for first 3 month and $40 thereafter.

if you use less data, 2nd hand 4G router + discounted new SIM card from Lyca/Lebara etc, keep on registering new number for initial data bonus.

I've heard good things about Leaptel. Their Product Review rating and reviews are also quite favourable. Superloop, I know, was once a beloved provider, but I think the quality has slipped in recent years. My vote was for Leaptel. And if that's not an option that works for you, then Superloop is a close second.

    • you’re not wrong ,i had superloop during covid when they gave free nbn for school students and it was fantastic never issues with drop out or slow speeds and i just switched to superloop nbn 50/20 and omg it’s that crap constantly slow as hell and drops out , i thought it might of been the modem that they gave me but now i’m not sure

Would not recommend internode. Currently on Leaptel, no issues.

  • Note NBN 25 seems only good for one person streaming at HD. If someone streams, the other can still browse, but other tasks may be slowed down significantly.

    • My TV is so old it doesn't even do HD. I typically stream straight to the laptop. If I find myself having enough money to upgrade the TV, I'll probably be in a position to spend more on NBN. But for now, I luckily don't have to worry about slowed streaming due to HD. Thank you though for input though. It might help someone looking at this thread who has the same probably in choosing a new NBN provider.

      • You said you stream in your laptop, and you also say you may have a roommate too one day - two people streams is a problem, the speed may be just not enough.

        • Exactly. And suppose one person is WFH and has a skype/teams call. It will be frustrating for both.

Tough position for OP to try to keep cost down

          • @avoidfullprice: not that tough, NBN is easy to cancel/upgrade, sign up 25M for now and hop to a different ISP for another initial sign up discount. Also he can easily split cost between himself and room mate when time comes.

Or just get a 4G router and SIM hopping until having a roommate, the 4G router can be used as BYO router thereafter. I watch HD youtube before/during/after dinner everyday, and update games regularly, cost be on average about 5-7 GB/day, easily covered by Sim hopping discounted SIM.

  • Thank you all for your input, discussion and ideas I hadn't considered. Although I haven't made a firm decision yet, I am leaning towards Flip due to its low ongoing price for NBN 25 and also its lower price point for NBN 50 if I need to upgrade when I get a housemate. I did consider mobile broadband, but realized I needed a modem for my security system to plug into. If I really get into a bind I can always swap over to another provider to chase initial signup discounts, but I'm hoping I won't have to do that.

  • i found 5g to be cheaper then my nbn and faster and no drop outs .even if it says 5G isn’t available at your address it doesn’t mean 5g won’t work as i brought my 5G modem thing to my ex unit for him to use and it worked perfectly and great speeds even though it said he wasn’t able to get 5G so i just signed up under my address and he just uses it at his address and no problems ..
