nbn Set up in New Build - Mesh

Hi Everyone
Hoping someone can help me as I’m a bit out of my depth. Looking for a recommendation for what I need. Moving into a a new build, where NBN is about to be installed leading to 6 ports in the garage, with data points scattered through the house.

Am I correct in saying what I’ll need to purchase is a 6 port splitter, so that 6 Ethernet cables are running between the nbn modem and the wall. Then one of the units inside should go into a mesh system to shoot around the house? If someone can recommend which ones to use so they are compatible that would be much appreciated. Don’t think I need anything major as the TVs will have direct ports into them so just something that will ensure I have strong wifi upstairs and downstairs.

Thank you!

  • From the NBN box, connect to a router (example)

From the router, connect to a network switch (example)

On a port central to the house, connect a wifi 6 extender or access point if wifi from garage is weak.

    I don’t see a need for mesh

Probably don't even need the switch if the router has 4 ports. Just connect 4 to where they'll be most use then plug in the mesh points from there.

Unless the house is a mansion that should easily cover it.

Yeah, and i was really just giving OP a product example so they dont plug all six cables into the NBN box. What they actually need is really up to them

      • Another option assuming 2 ports (lets assume they're ports 1 and 2) in the same location in the house would be

NBN box -> Port 1 shed to house -> Router in house -> Port 2 house to shed -> 5 port Ethernet switch in shed ->remaining 4 Ethernet switch sockets each connect to the remaining 4 Ethernet ports providing hardwired Ethernet to those endpoints in the house.

  • 6 port splitter

Either a router with six or more ethernet ports or if you have an isp proveded router, then you need a switch with more than six ports.

If ypu can ,go for ubiquiti and a few access points or similar instead of wireless mesh.

  • No, the NBN modem should be connected to the mesh router.

The mesh router should then be connected to all your ports, or you may need to connect it to a switch if it does not have enough ports available.

  • In the same boat OP, I have placed the Router in the garage and wifi is very poor inside the house. I was thinking of connecting the LAN cable from the NBN box to the network patch panel and then locating the router inside the house for better coverage. Also then using the additional Telstra router I have as an access point/bridge mode to boost coverage
