Alright.

So there's this Garmin vívoactive 5 thing, a Health and Fitness GPS Smartwatch. Now, it ain't as cheap as it was on Amazon Germany a while back, but it's still a decent deal I spose. First off, it's got this colorful AMOLED display. I don't know what AMOLED stands for, but it sounds fancy, right? Like, it's not your granny's black-and-white TV. And get this, the battery lasts up to 11 days in smartwatch mode. That's longer than my attention span at family gatherings.

Now, here's the thing – it's got this Body Battery energy monitoring. I don't know about you, but I'm not sure if I want my body monitored. Don't like goin' to the doctors meself, so it sounds a bit invasive, but hey, it helps you know when you're charged up or need to rest. Personalized insights based on sleep, naps, stress levels, workouts, and who knows what else. They say it's an estimation, so it's not like they're spying on your every move.

And sleep! It gives you a sleep score and coaching. I mean, I know when I've had a bad night's sleep – I wake up feeling like I've been hit by a bus. But apparently, this thing tells you how much sleep you need and gives you tips to improve. Plus, it throws in some fancy metrics like HRV status. No idea what that is, but it sounds alright.

Now, if you're into moving your body, it's got more than 30 built-in sports apps. Walking, running, cycling – the usual suspects. But then there's stuff like HIIT, swimming, and even golf. I don't know who golfs with a smartwatch, but hey, each to their own.

Here's the kicker though – wheelchair mode. It tracks pushes instead of steps, includes handcycle activities, and even has preloaded workouts for strength, cardio, HIIT, Pilates, and yoga. Challenges for wheelchair users, because apparently, regular challenges aren't challenging enough like tennis, can hardly get a rally going. Prefer swingball.

So, there you have it – the Garmin vívoactive 5. Not as cheap as it once was, but still a good deal if you're into having a little gadget that tells you more about your body than you probably want to know. Just don't let it boss you around too much, yeah?

  • Designed with a bright, colorful AMOLED display, get a more complete picture of your health, thanks to battery life of up to 11 days in smartwatch mode

  • Body Battery energy monitoring helps you understand when you’re charged up or need to rest, with even more personalized insights based on sleep, naps, stress levels, workouts and more (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)

Great writeup OP, and tbh I'm fine with the $20ish difference compared to the Amazon Germany deal since you get local Aussie warranty coverage 👍

Garmin really need to consolidate their product lines or make it bloody obvious what each model range is targeted to.

Agreed. I have looked long and hard I'm still not sure.

      *ix is premium multi sport
      Forerunner is running focused
      Venu is casual
      Instinct is adventure
Vivo I have no idea - non premium multi sport?

      Anything else?

And just like toothpaste comes in 500 different varieties that all claim to do one single thing good, there's no reason they couldn't just consolidate all of these features in 2 or 3 SKU's.

  • Yeah, local warranty.

Cheers OP, got JB Hifi to price match so i can click & collect. Ain't got time to wait for delivery… Get it?

    I'll let myself out.

  • Amazing write up. So different to the usual copy paste.

I have a Garmin Epix Gen 2 to replace my apple watch. Wasn't a fan of having a phone on my wrist so with the Garmin its more of a sports and data tracking watch.

Primary use is for Golf. I have a rangefinder but for 80% of shots I just want to glance at my wrist and get a 5m estimate. Also can get distances to end of fairway, bunkers, water etc. The great thing about the Garmin is it lasts 8-16 days on one charge so I can play 3 games of golf a week on one charge.

Secondary use is for Weights Training. You can program workouts and exercises into the watch and it will run through the program, count your reps and weights. Good data to have when you want to increase your lifts over a period of time.

    • Agreed, could never go back to golfing without a smart watch. Having gps distance to the pin on your wrist is great. 2keane have you compared the garmin golf app to other apps for apple/android like golfshot and golf pad? Does it give club recommendations and shot tracking etc? Getting a bit sick of having one game flatten my samsung watch.

      • Yep I had Golfshot Premium for a few years on the Apple Watch.

        Golfshot
What worked well on Golfshot was the distances, instant club recommendations and just navigation as it was touchscreen. What didn't was the tracking, the Golfshot app always registered practice swings. Scoring was good as its just scroll to the next screen and enter score, putts, penalties, bunkers etc. Only issue is the battery wouldn't last a round when the watch has some years on it. I would still use the apple for golf if this wasn't the case, i just feel battery degradation is too much for a 2-3 year $600-800 watch.

I also tried out Arccos Caddie (with sensors) and Hole19. Both were good apps but weren't as easy and seamless as Golfshot. Also the free versions of all the apps for the watch sucks, you really need the paid subscription. Good thing with the Garmin is its almost all free, there is a premium subscription but it has minimal features like wind speed, green contours etc. Im no pro so I wont need that….yet

        Garmin
This is where the difference is, tracking shots is automatic and doesn't register when you take practice swings. Club recommendations take a few rounds to get your averages but once it learns your distances it works instantly on course.

On the Garmin scoring is automatic when you are on the green there is an icon or when you walk to the next hole it shows up on the score screen as a par and just need to button up or down for score, putts, bunkers, penalties. The only issue scoring on the Garmin is if you forget a score or put it in wrong its hard to edit on the watch or I just haven't figured it out yet.

Phone app wise both are good, shows your stats, scorecards and really all you can ask for.

        • Awesome, thanks for the info mate

  • Garmin Vivoactive 5 In-Depth Review: Now With An AMOLED Display!

Smartwatch mode: Up to 11 days (5 days display always-on)
Battery Saver Smartwatch mode: Up to 21 days
GPS-Only GNSS mode: Up to 21 hours
All-Systems GNSS mode: Up to 17 hours
All-Systems GNSS mode with music: Up to 8 hours

TBH 17hrs GPS battery life is probably enough, just needem to last all day. About half the battery life of the Forerunner 965 (which costs twice as much)

    • the battery life of the Forerunner 965 (which costs twice as much)

Or the 30 hours of the Forerunner 255 (non music) is cheaper at $419 .

      • these AMOLEDs look a lot nicer than 255

  • Solid deal. This and the Venu 3 are kind of like the "smartwatch" versions of a Garmin watch to compete with apple, Samsung and pixel offerings. They do a bit of everything with the health tracking, phone functions, music, pay and of course more sport tracking modes than you can like a stick at!

I personally went the Venu 3. I was waiting on a decent deal on either the 265 or 965 but needed up jumping on the Venu 3 for $580ish.

Unless you are a pro level athlete or triathlete I doubt 98% of people would need anymore than vivo or venu offerings and probably be more attuned to the smartwatch feel of these instead.

There are some pros to these too (depending on your use case):
    - They use lighter weight materials like plastic but these are tough and still look really premium but weighs in at about 40ish grams vs 70ish grams of epix models.
    - They are also lower profile off the wrist so easier to fit comfortably under a shirt sleeve.
    - They are also smaller diameter so looks better on a small/medium wrist BUT the screen real estate is better (thinner bezel from screen to total circumference)
    - Venu 3 has 1.4" screen on 45mm vs 1.3" on 47mm epix 2 and 1.4" on 47mm forerunner 265/965.

I went the Venu 3 over this primarily as it has the barometric altimeter for hills/stairs/elevation as I do a lot of hills on walks/runs where I live and the larger screen size. The extra button, on screen workouts, built in speaker and better battery life are all little bonuses that have come in handy but not deal breakers.

I strongly recommend going into a JB hifi, rebel or similar that carry most of the Garmin's to try them on your wrist. Once I did this I put a line through the epix 2. I have a medium wrist and it look ok (47mm model) and larger 51mm model looked ridiculous. The Venu 3 was perfect size on wrist and gave the largest screen at 1.4" - I just had to ignore the "but epix 2 has everything making it better" chant in my head… I wouldn't use any of it anyway except maybe the full map ability on epix/965.

    • @souljah may i know how you manage to get Venu 3 for $580

      • @justchill walked into JB hifi and asked if they could match the Myer price they had a few months back and he did it with no problems. I'd just tell them that's your price, the fact they have been sold at that price before usually helps get it over the line. If you can get some discounted gift cards then you can use them to make it even cheaper.

        • Thanks… Have to wait until some good deal come up

  • Myer has the black and ivory one for the same price.

  • Blue one is roughly $410 on Amazon, local JB Hi-Fi price matched it and let me get it in black (which is currently out of stock on Amazon).

  • FYI: Did a live chat with JB and they brought their price down to $450.
Wouldn’t match as it’s international Amazon. Means I could pick up on the day with local store if issues arise.

  • FYI, this is still from Amazon Germany - JB HiFi will refuse to price match if they realise.
