  • i've been looking for a gaming laptop cooling pad. thanks for sharing

    • The Cooler Master one looks good. Another option to consider if you're frugal is the $15 kmart one, although quality may be questionable.

The Kmart one must be noisier with its 2x 125mm fans vs 1x 200mm one on CoolerMaster with fan speed control.

I have an ancient version of this that's still going strong.
It doesn't do a huge amount, but there's an audible difference in my old Y540s fans (a much more noticeable fan noise) when it's sitting on this and it's running, vs just sitting on the thing and that big fan isn't spinning.

Get a laptop stand instead, these things are functionally useless in comparison. Unless you took off the entire back of the laptop and the fans inside the laptop, this isn't likely to do anything since the inner fan will be blocking whatever air is being given by the outer fan. A laptop stand will be more adjustable and will provide space for air intake (get one that sits your laptop on 2 ends rather than just being a mini desk, better for airflow).

It'd be like me putting a fan next to the tempered side panel of my pc case. You'd get a cooler side panel but there's no point in that. Repaste your laptop's cpu/gpu and you'll get better temps, especially on laptops that cheap out on those (most of them).

Same thing goes for fans that '''suck hot air out''' of things like consoles/laptops which actually raise temps since they impede airflow.

    • If you have a decent laptop the body is likely aluminium. I'd suggest an external fan circulating cool air onto a warm metal surface is better than not having a fan at all. However, I agree the effect is probably minor.
