What Would You Do Differently? - Purchased Flights from CNS to BALI

First time poster, long time watcher (lol).

I have been trying to get more savvy with points, especially Qantas.

Yesterday, I purchased return flights from CNS to Bali | I paid $631.51 AUD total return including 20kg luggage. Booked directly via JetStar.

I collected Qantas points for this, but sadly as my Qantas Premium Plat CC hasn't arrived yet I couldn't redeem them points!

My question is, if you were booking it, what else would / wouldn't you do / what would you check points wise / price comparison wise etc.?

I'm new at this, trying to get my life and finances in order so any advise would be amazing!

Definitely a long time watcher. Classic ozbargain.

    CNS to BALI

CNS to DPS (or) YBCS to WADD

    • Thanks, wasn't sure on the exact airport codes :)

You didnt learn the airport codes in primary school?

    • You could take a boat from Yorkeys Knob.
Or hijack the PD shuttle, make a fuel stop at Lizzie and keep fingers crossed.
Jetstar usually has their "feral" shuttle, an A319 or similar.
      Enjoy!

      • Ironically… I'm on Lizard Island currently!

Wish I could take one of the boats, don't think i'd get approved sadly haha.

    I'd avoid jetstar.

    • Sadly it is the only option for flying direct on those dates :(

  • Get a large bodybag?

      You mean a bodyboard bag?
      Don't know what you're planning….

    • Bodybag…. I think bali has different things for us both haha.

I probably wouldn’t go to Bali in peak rainy and extreme humid season for a start.

    • Also good advise, it's planned that way sadly —-
My workplace has a closure period, so heading their just to check it out

Bali and Cairns won't be too different weather wise.

30°c, 97% humidity, afternoon storm, possible cyclone. Same shit, different location.

    I have a 1c per point rule:

    1. Go onto the Qantas website and search for classic rewards
    2. Find your comparable fare and determine the cost in points as well as cost in taxes
    3. Convert the amount in points into a $ cost at a rate of 1 cent per point (i.e. 50000 points = $500), and add it to the taxes to get a "total price" of sorts
    4. If that total price you get is higher than the cash fare you can find, then go with the cash fare. If the cash fare has a higher cost than the total points cost you figured out, go with the points flight

If you regularly fly business class, you can increase the conversion rate from 1 cent per point to something higher. Otherwise, 1c is the most reasonable and straightforward rate to adopt IMO.

    Hope this helps!

    Long flight…

  • Don't waste QFF points on international economy return, aspire to the Oneworld Classic Flight Reward.

    • Sorry, it maybe was a misconfusion.

I didn't USE any points for the flight, only gained, I just wanted to know if I could have gained anymore / differently :)

      • Qantas Premier Platinum earns 1.0 QFF per dollar. Qantas Amex Ultimate earns 1.25. Reconsider your choice of card.

  • You could save up your points over the long term and treat yourself to a special business class "bucket list" destination in the future. If you search for the points cost of your "said" destination, you'll be able to work out roughly when you'll be able to go based on your annual points savings. Once you know the approximate date/year - then start watching for sales and particularly points sales. In the meantime start churning Credit cards for bonus sign up points.
