Is there a better value ultra-wide screen from a reputable manufacturer then?

    • I guess it has to be QLED for fair comparison so maybe this for $589? https://prismplus.com.au/products/prism-xq340-pro

Ignore the RRP idk about "reputable" when it comes to Prism+ as they are known for shady "sales" tactics. Although this monitor has a lot of reviews and it seems like an overall good monitor.

        Reputable manufacturer

        • +1

Realistically if we were to treat Samsung the same I wouldn't say they are "reputable" either with their QC and sending out expensive Ultrawides cracked or that crack within a week. Or their Odyssey lineup being more overpriced then other monitors with same specs but double the ghosting effects. Sadly couldn't find another 34 inch QLED monitor to compare to and this monitor specifically from Prism+ does seem great for value.

Sure, but at least in this case you'd be buying it from OfficeWorks so OfficeWorks would be the point of contact for any issues.

Prism+ has a pretty bad reputation for Customer Service, then combine that with lower grade quality products in general and it's not the best recommendation.

There have been plenty of 34" Ultrawide monitors from "reputible brands" at this price point or better, although not all would have the TB3 connections. For anyone wanting a 34" Ultrawide that doesn't specifically need the TB3 connection, this list on PC PartPicker would be a a good starting point

            • @dmouse81: Yeah better off buying Prism+ through Amazon
A lot of people have said the same about Samsung customer service too so I thought it was an equal comparison to make. Luckily here you can buy through OW.

Yeah definitely a lot more better options I've posted plenty but was mainly looking at Qleds for fair comparison. Otherwise $399-499 will get you a better monitor then this for gaming without having to look to hard. It's a shame no one tries to make QLEDs at 34 inch especially when they seem to be in the same price range as IPS models.

Yeah 100%, I'd much rather deal with Amazon customer service than Prism+ customer service.

Except you don't have to deal with Samsung at all if you're buying it from OfficeWorks, you deal with OfficeWorks for everything if you have any issues

      • +1

no Thunderbolt 3 connection points, which normally adds about $200 to the monitor price

        • Yeah if he wants Thunderbolt 3 then the answer is no, do they even give any new models Thunderbolt 3 support or is it just being phased out at this point?

  • +2

    AMD FeeSync

Given how much the premium for G-Sync monitors ended up making the market taking up the license-free Freesync more whole-heartedly, this amuses me.

Looks like the Samsung web store and JB have brought it down to $799 recently as well.

    • Yeah yesterday when I was looking those prices were listed but saw it was on OzB for this price previously, OW must've just price dropped today to price beat them.

It's incredibly difficult to find a decent monitor; even in the $1000+ range, prices often don't match up with specs. Anybody got any recommendations for a 31"-34" curved non-ultrawide used for gaming? Preferably 800+ nits, 144hz, VA panel.

    • +2

The 800+ nits I think is the hard part but I'll have a look

    • +2

      https://www.computeralliance.com.au/32-samsung-ls32bg852nexx…

This model peaks at 800nits brightness in HDR. I'm thinking you're better off with the 42 inch LG C3 OLED TV. If you reduce your needs to 600 nits in HDR settings then you've got a lot more options.

      • Hey, thanks! That's actually a great recommendation - and I already had that one in my "maybe" list. The only reason I haven't bought it is because I'm really not too sure about Samsung as a brand; I've heard bad things about their screens being fragile, easily cracking artifacting, dead pixels, ghosting etc.

I probably wouldn't go with the TV; I want a high pixel density for sharper images and the last time I tried a TV (albeit a 50") the picture quality was horrid.

The high nits requirement is because I was advised by a friend more knowledgeable than I that an especially high brightness combined with HDR contributes to the colours really popping.

I'm not really knowledgeable at all regarding what makes a good monitor; I just want to find something slightly larger than my current 27" MPG27CQ but with exceptional image quality.

          https://www.mwave.com.au/product/acer-predator-x32-fp-32-160…

Maybe something like this? Any sort of Mini-LED monitor will definitely blow you away compared to what you currently have. Nits isn't everything when it comes to colours popping and 600 nits sounds like it would be more than enough especially with local dimming zones included. Even the monitor I linked struggles to peak at 800 nits in some settings and main issues I see with that monitor is flickering at 240hz. I'd have a look at reviews for the LG though or even pop into a local retailer that stocks it, definitely hard to beat the image quality from that TV.

        • +1

Sounds like you mainly want 32 inch 4k 144hz with good colours/brightness. Need to keep in mind what your system is too. If you want exceptional quality 4k is definitely what you want but unless you have a 4080 or better in your system the quality you can get is limited

          • @lookingforadeal7: Yeah, I've got system limits in mind. Sorry, I should have mentioned - I wanted a 32" non-ultrawide because that's QHD with a good pixel density whilst still being an upgrade. My rig is decent enough coupled with a ROG strix 3070 ti, but I don't think it can deliver 4k with the buttery smooth feedback I'm looking for.

Do you know, I actually looked at that Acer Predator and it ticks all the boxes (including an IPS panel!) except for being curved. I haven't been able to go back to flat after trying curved… I fell in love with it immediately. It's incredibly immersive and when you sit fairly close to your monitor (I sit between 30-40cm away from mine, a bit over a forearm's length) it almost feels like… reality? It's the way the screen's curve reaches around your face and looking left and right doesn't mess with the image quality.

Both of your recommendations have been fantastic, man, and I thank you for your effort. This is why I mean it's so hard to find a monitor - I can get something that ticks MOST of the boxes, but not all of them.
I'm considering the Corsair Xeneon but I really don't want to spend $3400 on a monitor when that was about the same amount I spent on my rig.
            https://www.mwave.com.au/product/corsair-xeneon-flex-45wqhd2…

Maybe I just need to stop letting perfect be the enemy of good.

            • +1

@rotundpiglet83: The corsair xeneon flex pixel density is really bad - you don't want to be running 3440x1440 at 45 inches.

Have you considered the AW3423DW / F? If you're looking at $1,500 it's one of the best PC monitors you can get at the moment. It does HDR at 1000nits too. Not sure your 3070ti would push super high frame rates on recent AAA's but being OLED anything over 100fps on it feels really smooth.

              • @jk82: The PC case gear specs list it at 400 cd/m2… to be honest, I'm about to throw nits out the window because it ticks every other box with bonuses being a g-sync compatible IPS curved screen(!!) but I just wanted to expand on what you mean by running at 1000 nits.

I'll be honest, I haven't seen that screen and I'm incredibly close to pulling the trigger on that because the price is right and the specs are great.

                • +2

@rotundpiglet85: The AW3423DW is an OLED panel not IPS, its certified as "HDR True black" at 400nits, but it does have a HDR1000 mode - honestly either mode looks spectacular, and I use mine for work every day in a bright room and it's definitely bright enough for day to day use. I've been using it for a year now and it's honestly the best monitor I've ever had.

Also Dell has a 3 year next business day replacement which also covers OLED burn in. Mine had a bug where it wouldn't wake from suspend unless I unplugged it from the wall, so I contacted them and the next day I had a brand new one at my doorstep - no charges at all to me, I was very happy with their support.

Also, because it's not IPS you don't have any backlight glow and those inky blacks look amazing in games like Alan Wake 2 or the Resi Evil remakes. Keep an eye on ozb - the F variant is currently $1,699 on dells website but the DW often goes on sale around $1,500 and the F will sometimes go $1,450-ish

Also keep in mind that at CES recently there have been a load of new monitor announcements (heaps of new OLEDS) but they're unlikely to hit stores for months, and as such - see price reductions on existing models.

                  • +1

@jk82: I was actually a dumbass and clicked a sponsored link by mistake for the XG349C.

The AW3423DWF specs are pretty incredible. I'm strongly considering buying it right now since I've got the cash to splurge… I can't believe G-sync compatibility adds another 400 to the price tag though, what the hell. I wonder if it's really worth that much or if it's just Nvidia overvaluing their product.

You've mentioned the blacks looking better in horror-style games; do the colours on an OLED panel stand out particularly well? I frequently open-world games with incredible vistas; MH:W, Grounded, BG3, theHunter to name a few.

                    • +1

@rotundpiglet85: The F variant came out probably 6months after the DW, so it's not $400 extra for the gsync module, it's that Dell reduced the cost of the monitor by making tweaks - 165hz instead of 175hz, no gsync etc. (I've read HDR issues with the F variant so look into that) and calling it a different name (add F at the end).

And re: your question, well, it's OLED. If you don't know the difference between OLED, IPS and VA I highly suggest you do some research. But yes, OLED is the best screen technology you can get at the moment and will look great no matter what you throw at it. Hence why lookingforadeal7 suggested the LG 42" C3 to begin with! For the same price you could get a 4k 42" OLED panel (on sale they're about $1,600) - sure it's a TV but a lot of people use it as a monitor. Main difference there is obviously the size, but it's also limited to 120hz… but it does look fantastic and it's got those inky blacks and a great response time. So really depends what you're after.

                  • @jk82: Sorry could you quickly explain the difference between the F and DW variants? I've been looking at this monitor and that's the bits that's confusing me.

            • +1

@rotundpiglet83: That Xenon has a 21:9 aspect ratio too. I would personally just go to retailers and have a look at models until you find something you're happy with. Usually easier doing it that way then searching by specs.

              • @lookingforadeal7: That's fair enough. What I'm really petrified about is the thought of dumping a fat stack of cash on something that looks nice to the eye, only to find out that if I had done my due diligence, I could have had something much better.

                Thank you for your help!

Out of curiosity - why 800+ nits?
Mine has 400 nits and even on sunny days 40-50% brightness is more than enough.

      • The nits requirement is because I was advised by a friend that HDR requires a high level of brightness but combined makes the colours really "pop", so to speak. I'm most interested in high image quality.

      • +2

99% of people don't understand how nits work!

eg. 400 nits to 2000 nits is NOT 5 times as bright as many would assume!

400 to 800 is 1 stop of brightness increase
800 to 1600 is 1 stop of brightness increase

My sony does 1000 ish peak brightness on 10% window

Watching Asoka/mandolorian in dolby vision, I have to look away from lightsaber fights because the flashes are that bright it hurts my eyes! This is not even in a pitch dark room! Anyone that says you need 1000+ nits peak brightness is just delusional unless you watch your tv in direct sunlight haha!

        • Hey, thanks for the advice! I was actually advised to get something 1000+ nits! I might end up settling for 600 nits, because most of the screens I've seen fall short of even 400 nits, which is what I've currently got.

  • Using it from last 2 years, no qled blacks on this. Very had but visa mountable. Can power upto 85W. Has builtin speakers. Good for this price.
