Mobo Died - Suggest a Replacement

Recently my MSI B550 Tomahawk motherboard appears to have died - it hangs on boot screen ('MAG' logo) when trying to load any type of windows installation including rescue disks. I unplugged and removed everything except for 1 stick of ram and it won't even boot to a USB rescue disk created by EaseUS todo or Macrium Reflect. I can only boot to memtest and all the memory sticks test fine. Basically it is either the CPU or mobo and I punting on the mobo.

Kind of disappointed it died after only just over 2 years and now I have to find a replacement.

I am looking for a board which can support at least 2 monitors with onboard graphics - I do NOT game. I don't overclock.
I also have 2 x Gen4 NVMe M.2 SSDs I want to install.

I am guessing if I want to use my existing DDR4 I am looking at AM4 platform only?
Any suggestions for a quality board that has all the above?

Existing parts::
Ryzen 7 5700G
980 Pro 500gb + crucial T500 2TB SSD
Corsair RM750x PSU
Ripjaws V DDR4 16gb 3600-16 (x2) - 4 slots
Don't need onboard wifi

    Firmware updated?

Can you boot into the BIOS?
If so try flashing the BIOS
    Load optimized defaults
Disable full screen logo and see where it gets stuck

    • It actually passes the bios stage - looks like the MSI replaces the windows boot logo with their own.

Same as I posted below but it hangs at the windows booting screen. Does this on installed OS or rescue USB with nothing else plugged in.

All motherboards have 3yr warranty on them if purchased in Aus

Have you tried clearing the cmos (reset bios) ?

Did you try turning it off and on again?

  • I can access bios.
Have for to latest version - I was really far behind, but if it ain't broke….
Reset to defaults a couple of times

I can try disabling boot logo and see.

      • Yes they cycle through OK

It gets to the Windows logo screen and the circle animation does half a rotation and hangs.

This is either using OS installed on the internal drive or a bootable USB rescue disk and no other drives installed.

        • This sounds similar to another user who had to change their MB to fix the issue.

[Update: Installed the new board - Asrock b550m-itx. Issue resolved]

The only other things that I would try is playing around with some settings in BIOS, as below:
(I have an Intel system so not sure if yours will be the same/similar)
          1. [Boot Setting] Fast Boot —> Disabled
          2. [Advanced Setting] SATA Mode —> AHCI Mode (try others as well)
          3. [Advanced Setting] BIOS CSM/UEFI Mode —> UEFI (try CSM as well)
          4. [Security Setting] Trusted Computing - Security Device Support —> Enabled (try Disabled as well) - for TPM 2.0
          5. [Security Setting] Secure Boot —> Enabled (try Disabled as well)

          Other:
For the hard drive and flash drive, make sure their partition style is set to GPT, not MBR.
When trying to boot from the flash drive, completely disconnect the hard drive (to ensure it is not interfering).

If none of that works, then a new motherboard may be the only solution.
          Good luck.

          • @Malik Nasser: The USB rescue disks are set to GPT by default (have just checked this). Pretty sure my SSD is set to GPT as everything was UEFI and had been working for 2 years. Bit of an update below.

  • Bit of an update - I knew the board RMA would take a while, and wasn't 100% it was the issue, so I bought a Gigabyte B550 Aorus Elite V2.
Swapped over the CPU and the memory and same thing has happened :(:(:(

Hangs on booting to either the USB rescue disk or the SSD.

I guess that means it is either the CPU or an outside chance of the RAM (although I have swapped out sticks to eliminate this possibility)

Now I think I might have to RMA the CPU instead of the mobo.

I am sure I have tried every combination to swap things out:
Completely different mobo - same issue
Swapping single sticks of RAM - same issue
Unplugged absolutely everything (including front USBs and sound etc) - same issue
Tried previously working SSD OR Rescue disks created by 2 different programs - same issue

    • If you are having the same issue with a new motherboard, then maybe your power supply is the issue.
CPU's are generally pretty rock solid.
Power supplies definitely die more often than CPU's.

If you have another PSU to test with, then try that.

After that I would also try to underclock and undervolt the CPU.

If none of that works, then you might as well build a totally new computer. You have pretty much tried everything else.

Turns out it was the CPU.

I took it back to the store and they said 2 weeks just to look at it. I couldn't wait so I bought another CPU as this was the last part not checked. I put it into the old hardware and it booted straight away.

I have sent the CPU in to the store anyway but I have 2 concerns - that the fault occurs when booting to windows, which they may not check and if it is faulty they will refuse a refund even though it is my choice of refund or replacement under consumer law.
