If you're looking for a great budget hand grinder for espresso while camping, Lance Hedrick highly rates the K4 as one of the best value espresso hand grinders.

Was waiting for this to drop below $100 on BF / Xmas but it didn't - not at it's $90 all-time low but still quite cheap.

Been waiting for K6 to be restocked and go on sale for ages. Just pulled the trigger on K6.

FYI - K4 is espresso oriented and K6 is pour over / all rounder.

    • Yep, K6 moreso for pour-over and also rated highly by Lance!

      Hope you enjoy the purchase.

      • Not sure how it compares to my comandante but it's certainly cheaper

        • Anyone know why the K4 is supposed to be better for espressos than the K6?

Apparently it is because the K4 can get a finer grind size thanks to the titanium burrs, but if it's so much better, then why is it cheaper than the K6?

          Maybe it's just marketing.

Has anyone used these and found a noticeable difference when doing a fine grind?

Quote from website: "The burr set of the K4 grinder is Titanium-Coated Burr whereas the K6 grinder is Stainless Steel Burr."

@Noob Noob: I dont think K4 is meant to be "better" than K6 at espresso, its just that K4 is really only for espresso (doesnt do filter as well), while K6 is meant to be good for both.

From what I understand K4 is better for more traditional / "blendy" espresso. K6 is better for more moden / clarity focussed espresso. Neither is better than the other - just one or the other may be better suited to your tastes.

K6 is meant to be more like 1zpresso K series, Commandants C40, etc. K4 is meant to be more like 1zpresso JX / J series.

  • I got an angle grinder from Bunnings. Can I use it to grind my coffee beans?

    • Probably but it will take you forever to get enough for a cup.. not to mention the uniformity will be off. But you can do it

    • +3

      That's for grinding angles.
      This is for grinding coffee.

I have had the K4 for around a year or so and love it.
    Amazing value for $102.40
Works great for espresso with the Dual Boiler, Dedica and Picopresso. I also use it with the Aeropress and Hario switch.

I’ll be pairing this up with a Picopresso and Bellman 50ss steamer for camping - can’t wait to see how it’d compare against my home setup.

      • +1

Nice setup - I take the picopresso with the K4 when I travel and enjoy the espresso I get from it.
        Enjoy your camping cafe!

    • What settings are you guys using on the K4 to make it work best for expresso? I found that the suggested settings to be too fine

      • +1

You’d have to experiment, it changes from bean to bean - there’s no set number. Explore coarser settings even if it falls out of their recommended “espresso” range.

      • +1

It depends on what type of bean, how fresh it is and what espresso:
e.g. recently medium roast beans, 70 on the BDB, 75 on the Dedica and 74 on the picopresso (-2 for beans a few months on)

Note that Kingrinders may have a different "actual" zero than the zero mark (i.e. where the burrs touch), so settings may vary between grinders.

  • I'm currently using a Timemore C2 and it takes forever to grind for espresso. Would this be much faster or just provide a better grind/more control over the grind size?

    • +1

The 48mm burrs in the Kingrinder should grind faster, it take about 40 to 50 seconds to do 18g espresso. Also provide smaller adjustments to dial in espresso

      • +1

Thanks, yeah it's definitely a lot faster, also managed to choke my machine with my first grind haha.

    • +1

My K4 grinds 19g for espresso in a touch under 30s.
The titanium coated 48mm burrs work a treat.

      • +1

This thing is fantastic, it's so quick. I am finding it noticeably harder to turn than the Timemore though but that's probably due to the burr size and it absolutely inhaling the beans.

  • Anyone know how this compares to the breville smart grinder pro? or is this a completely different type of product and I'm way off.

    • +5

They are coffee grinders, yes - manual vs electric.

Aside from convenience (having to grind manually by hand), this will be a lot better.

    • I found the Smart Grinder Pro wasn't giving me consistent grinds, some would be really fine and some would be more coarse. Also, my Smart Grinder would get clogged after a few shots (maybe from the oils), K4 has not had any issues. Highly recommend if you dont mind 30sec of grinding coffee by hand.

  • K4 OOS it seems - I'm too late

K6 comes in at $118 but I already have one.
