  • Thanks OP!

Always wanted to try these. I have the Chipolos but also want to try the Samsung SmartTags aswell.

So this is nothing to do with Apple Airtags as it only finds items within the 250 range?

    • +2

Where does it suggest it is?

    • +4

It is similar but Tiles can only find other Tiles. Airtags leverage every iOS device around to build the network.

    • -7

No, airtags use wifi I believe. This is great if you leave your wallet and keys around the house in locations you forget. I've used these a couple of times in the past 6 months of owning. Wish I got it for this price.

      • +1

        Airtags and Smarttags use BLE

  • -1

Shipping or transport will kill this deal for me, no local jb hifi unfortunately.

  • +10

Non replaceable battery will definitely kill the deal

    • +8

This is why I've never bought one, it's just guaranteed e-waste.

    • +1

Not sure if this is a good product or not as I don’t use it personally but the product seems to be terrible for the environment as most people will chuck this in the bin after 3 years.

On the other hand AirTag uses coin battery which again is not the best thing to be around young kids or pets.

    • They used to sell the Tile Pro here (but stopped with the change in laws), they have replaceable batteries and rated to a 400ft range

I bought up on Tile Pro 2 years ago and theyre going strong.

this may be cheap but if you lose something only others with Tiles would ping it. airtag or smarttags are better imo

    • +7

That's nice, but we don't all have apple devices.

      • -1

SmartTags are Samsung if you have those.

The benefit of AirTags/SmartTags is that they both use their respective devices (iPhones/Galaxys) to find other devices so given the sheer volume, I think it ends up working much better as a result.

I can't personally see Tile being a valid option in Australia.

        • +1

Tile is older than both of these services, and has a pretty big install base.

Smart Tags only work with Samsung devices, and AirTags only work with Apple devices. Tile works across all platforms.

          • +1

@klaw81: Yeah right, but they essentially got the death penalty with the release of airtag, it's only a matter of time before it becomes obsolete.

            • +2

@lgacb08: Tile (and a couple of others) have adopted the Google "Find my" network for their newest devices, which effectively makes every modern Android phone part of the network.

            • @lgacb08: OK Tim.

Don't think it works that far, it's only if you misplace your keys / wallet around the house.

    • Eh it's worked for me a few times. About 6 months ago I retrieved my wallet that had been picked up by someone and taken to their home on the other side of the city.

I turned on the community search mode, got a ping a day later, headed out to the area and moved around until the app connected to the tile. Then I had the tile play it's ringtone until I found the right unit.

      • +1

Wow - and then you knocked on their door and said - I think you have my wallet?
Depending on who picked up the wallet, could have become quite confrontational

        • Yeah it was some super apologetic whitebread lady who said she had picked it up with the intention of dropping it into the police station but I was prepping to throw down when I knocked.

  • Thanks Op, great price. Hopefully not old stock/batteries.

Tile was great before it got sold to Life360. Would recommend Apple Airtags as an alternative.

    • +1

Can you get a 2 pack for $25?

      • +1

Vastly better question than: "Does it work well?"

        #TypicalOzBargain

      • Yeah but when you find yourself having misplaced your items, you wouldn't really be asking the same question.

    • +2

Airtags are only viable if you have Apple devices.

      • +1

Tiles are great for anyone using Android/Samsung devices. The downside is that they work via devices with the Tile app installed (unlike Airtags that report off any iPhone whether you like it or not).

Easy solution is that I gifted some of these to family members, now their devices help find my Tiles as well!

        • +2

That's pretty much my strategy too. And I'm far more likely to lose my keys at the house of friends or family than in the general public so it's far more effective than you'd think.

  • +5

I've got Tile devices on my keys and in my wallet. I've used them multiple times to find my keys/wallet and even phone
    (I'm very forgetful)
I've only used them in suburbia, and they've never let me down

    Non-replaceable battery = more plastic e-waste

    • A lot of gadgets don't last more than 3 years these days.

  • +2

bought two, thanks ops. i saw a lot of compliants about non-replaceable battery, but really for this price, $12.5 to save you a hassle from not finding the keys in the the rush morning for 3 years, it is defnitely worth it! in terms of the plasticv waste, it is really small, and i can assuem you the plastic used is less than a water bottle, so what you're really complaining about!

    • +1

      Yep.

I wonder how many of the e-waste brigade are using a mobile phone older than three years…

      • +1

That was exactly my point earlier. I bet there's heaps of gadgets bigger and less useful than these things, that don't last 3 years.
