30m Trojan Measuring Tape $5 (RRP $10) + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store/ OnePass) @ Bunnings

821

Good little tape measure. Remember Length times Girth over Angle of the Shaft (aka YAW) divided by mass over width.

Heaps of stock across Australia: https://bunnings.youinstock.com.au/search/5660651

As highlighted by ripprind:

"this isn't your regular self retracting household tapemeasure that you wear on your belt.
30m is about 3 times as long as a "regular " tape, it has a small krank handle to rewind and is mostly used outside, to measure out garden and such and at the beginning stages of construction."

It's not a good idea to measure your banana with a steel tape
Better to measure twice, cut never.

Do Bunnings do partial refunds? I reckon I’ll only need about 10cm.

    its a weird shape

Better off using a dressmaker's tape then.

It's Length times Diameter plus Weight over Girth divided by Angle of the tip squared!

      • Depends on who’s attached to it ;)

We need to pre-sort by D2F ratio, taking complimentary yaw angles into account

The spaces you have between your sentences and punctuation marks make me uncomfortable.

This is useful to calculate D2F ratio, which can be then use to determine mean jerk time…

Just FYI, this isn't your regular self retracting household tapemeasure that you wear on your belt.
30m is about 3 times as long as a "regular " tape, it has a small krank handle to rewind and is mostly used outside, to measure out garden and such and at the beginning stages of construction.
I would struggle to find use for it at home and would not buy it.

Calm down mate, its a free forum.
It was just PSA for ppl who would jump on it and find out its not what they though it was. No need to just grab stuff you have no use for while someone who actually needs one is missing out.

@diggityfish: What is wrong if part of his comment is not helpful? He was just mentioning his own personal opinion, do you want other people to criticise you too just because a deal is not suitable for you?

              • +8

                @diggityfish:

                no one needs to know.

Speak for yourself because I needed to know in this case, and I found it quite helpful.

I don't see any value in people announcing they wont buy something on ozbargain

You don't actually believe this. You're just mad.

              • +6

@diggityfish: Lol mate you need to calm down.

His comment definitely helped me NOT BUY it because I'm one of those people who impulse buys.

Each to their own, no need to criticise.

                • -4

@montorola: I have no idea why you're suggesting I calm down. I agree his comment on its usability was helpful and added it to the post….

                @diggityfish:

Just do it, don't announce - no one needs to know.

I just thought I'd let you know that no one needs to know about my not wanting to comment, so I won't be commenting on your comment.

settle down champ. no need to get so insecure

          • +6

@diggityfish: having a melt down because someone gives valid info on a product that some people may look past is pretty insecure

            • -3

@Kozhutki: What meltdown? Do you know what meltdown means? I added his comment to the post and agreed with it? How is that insecure?

I genuinely have no idea where you are coming from.

Worth noting, this is a steel tape, not a flexible fibreglass one.

    • Hey mate, is one better than the other (steel v flex fibre)?

What’s better for measuring outdoor spaces to plan patio/decking, car port, shade sail, etc?

Edit: google suggests much of a muchness with main points electrical conductivity and rust of steel tape, v stretching of fibre tape… anything else?

      • Depends on usage - I use fiberglass as I work in the natural environment, not the built one and I need the flexibility, but on a job site/building project the steel one would be good, though it isn't often you need to measure such long runs, usually in set-outs.

      • I'm not sure how flexible this steel tape is, but I like being able to pull my fibreglass tape tight around pegs arranged in a triangle to for example make sure a corner is square.

  • +1

I saw these the other day, but memory said they were a lot more than $5 then. Thanks OP, grabbed a couple

  • Good little tape measure.

If the confusing dimensions on the website are anything to go by, this is anything but "little"

Laser measurers are pretty good for the outdoor scenarios and also work as a cat toy. Save a lot of hassle compared to physical tapes.

    • Good call, do they work well in sunlight/ bright areas? Never used one myself.

      • +1

I believe they do, being laser, never had to use it that way though. Just put a stick in the ground so the light can land if you need to measure an arbitrary distance where there are no walls.

        • Ahh awesome. Noted, they have been popping up of late and I have been intrigued.

          • +1

            @diggityfish: Something to consider:
            https://officiallyoutdoors.com.au/laser-measure-outdoors/
Would do it on a day where it’s overcast just so I can see the red dot landed where I want it to, that or some cardio going back and forth, or bring a pair of binoculars 😅 Apparently the strength of the laser is capped for safety reasons, so I’m not sure there’s much of a difference among different manufacturers.

Interesting device to fiddle with either way.

            • +1

@Alley Cat: rad - thanks. Tempted to give one a nudge now. In the right circumstances looks to save a lot of time.

    • 'Laser measurers are pretty good for the outdoor scenarios and also work as a cat toy'

watched a YouTube video (US?) last night of maybe a flock of geese saying they are not afraid of anything - except green laser - guy then started flicking the green laser across the lawn near them, and they all promptly scattered, and took off outta there.

      • Goose is a scary bird, I only learned about that from watching a video of a goose consistently attacking a cat, and the cat kept backing out. Not sure if we broke the food chain by over-domesticating certain species. Now I need to source a green laser to protect my cats 😁

These are also quite useful for kids sports, such as measuring out pitches etc; especially at grades where parents have to step in to help setup. The steel tape works slightly better than the fabric/fibreglass ones which tend to blow around in the breeze.

Will have to get another couple for various kit bags.

  • whats next… a Thermometer from brazzers?

  • 30m ? guessing soft flexible tape rather than the curved metal self-supporting spring retract types used for measuring up to 8m. Soft tape needs two people - one to hold the other end to have any accuracy.
I have a Stanley Fatmax 8m metal type - blade is 29mm wide to be self-supporting when extended horizontally up to about 3.5m - mine cracked at about 3.7m just now. Good for measuring rooms if you don't have fancy laser type, but it's fat (47mm wide not counting belt clip) and heavy (560gm) so not pocket friendly.
    Soft tape - I have a 10m one from DAISO - probably $3-6 - and … I've never used it.
So - my question is - who needs it - as described by OP - for measuring garden and land plots before early stages of construction - most other folks, probably never.

    • Someone mentioned it also comes in handy for measuring out things for sports / kids sports.

Beyond that not heaps of utility.

  • Only 30m?

  • I got this one few days ago at $4.75 with Powerpass. Doing a project measuring the garden to calculate cubic meters of mulch, super useful. 3x 20m+ long garden bed done with one go. No complain for $4.75.
