  • So, is thunderbolt still only Apple or can it be used by Android now etc?

    • +4

Thunderbolt 3 became USB-C and has been available for Android since then.

      • Thank you, that clears up a lot.

        • +7

          To clarify,
Thunderbolt was co-developed by Apple and Intel, and thunderbolt was licensed from Intel in various products (Macs, PCs, Displays, Peripheral devices, etc).

Thunderbolt 3 was the basis for the USB4 standard.

        • Not correct though. [clears comment]

          • @Elijha: You mean to say that Thunderbolt 3 did not switch to the USB-C connector? Are you sure?

            • @Clear: Technical but:USB-C, or USB Type-C, is a physical connector (not a protocol) that supersedes previous USB connectors such as Type A and Type B (and mini and mico versions). The form factor is preferred by many due to its ease of use and reversible connection.
Thunderbolt 3 (a protocol) uses the Type-C connector, as does thunderbolt 4 and 5. Previously Thunderbolt used a minidisplay port connector. Either case give Thunderbolt the opportunity to connect to devices already using these ports ie displays. So no Thunderbolt 3 did not evolve to a physical port. Thunderbolt 3 and USB 3.2 have many over lapping features but Thunderbolt supersedes it in many ways. There seems to be a common aim to merge USB and Thunderbolt standards - but its not there yet TB5 was announced a few months ago and is still advancing ahead of the USB releases.

So basically your wording was not clear. It either read as a software stack to physical which makes no sense or to a lot of people who associate USBC = USB3.2 that Thunderbolt downgraded to be the equivalent of USB3.

              • @Elijha:

Thunderbolt 3 (a protocol) uses the Type-C connector

Correct. My statement that Thunderbolt 3 uses USB-C is correct. End of discussion.

      • would you be able to suggest any of these?

A few reviews saying it's only usb4 not thunderbolt 4 and doesn't work for their monitors and egpus which a thunderbolt 4 should do.

    • +4

      You’re correct.
One of those reviews is mine and it’s definitely not a Thunderbolt 4.
      Quite misleading advertising.
