Need advise on Airasia transit time

Hi all,

In an earlier Airasia deal, I had hurriedly booked a return flight from Hong Kong - KL - Sydney. The transit time while at KL is 2 hours, do you guys think this will be enough for me to get my luggage and check in to the next leg (KL to Syd) or should I change the HK flights to an earlier time?

Thanks in advance. Hopefully someone has done this before and can share your experience here… or if I miss the flights, will Airasia do anything to help? (Jetstar was really good with this - I missed a connecting flight before, due to a delay on their part, and no questions asked, just issued me a new seat on the next flight)

  • I think that's not doable. IIRC Airasia uses the LCCT and if you are on another airline for the next leg, it will probably be from the International Terminal.

And if you are with Airasia for both legs, remember that even if they are willing to put you on the next flight, it will be at least the next day so you're up for a night's stay. Though KL's pretty cheap.

  • Thanks for the quick response. I'm on Airasia for both legs of the flight… not sure if that helps…

  • It is do able as long as your flight is not delayed

  • Doable. Book into the front row. It is cheap and you get treated properly. If you are really concerned, book red carpet treatment. Someone will meet you at your flight when you land in KL and take you through immigration. You will even get a special car just for you on the tarmac if required.

You need to provide more info:

    1. Most important of all, did you book it as a integral trip from Sydney <-> HK with a stopover in KL? That determines whether Airasia has any responsibility to you for the connection. If their site suggested this combo, then they believe you can make it, provided there are no delays and they should reschedule you if the connection fails. On the other hand, if you made the booking as two separate flights, it's your responsibility. But read the fine print.

    2. Are both flights going through LCCT? That means you don't have to change terminals.

    3. As you are only transiting Malaysia? In that case you don't enter the county so no time spent going through immigration.

Delays are more likely towards the end of the day when time losses pile up. If the HK flight is early in the day, your chances are better.

  • If you booked a return ticket from Sydney to HK then you need not worry about it as they will get you a seat on the next plane.

But if you booked single tickets then most likely they won't be able to help you. Also, if you booked single flights you will be short on time as you would need to clear customs, immigration, luggage and then walk to the other side of the airport and check in, luggage, customs, etc. You should consider buying Airasia Insurance, which is fairly cheap for all flights ($10-$15 i think) which as far as I know, covers for flights missed in situation like this and lost luggage etc(Although you would need to check this again as I am not 100% sure).

On a positive note, I had booked four single Air Asia flights abt 6 months ago and all of them got to the destination on or before the scheduled time.

  • I think I have done this before. At your first flight at counter, tell them u have a connecting flight straight after at KL, see if they can give you front row seats and organise your luggage at door so it come out first.

I did get front rows, though my luggage didn't get out say after 15 mins. When u get to the LCCT to see your flight to Sydney, it will say gate "Closed", do not panic just proceed to counter they will check u in (given u are not seriously delayed).

Hope this gets the anxiety out, my fiance instructed me what to do as he flied out first with these experiences so I wasn't too panic =)

  • Thanks for all your comments! The flights was all booked separately with Airasia, therefore not a connecting flight as such. I think I will try to get front row seats as suggested, and try to organise for my luggage to come out as soon as possible… Thanks guys and gals!

  • I've gone through the LCCT a few times. In my opinion, the queues in immigration are some of the slowest I've ever seen, and when you add in the non-flexible way that Air Asia (as a low-cost airline) will deal with you if you're a few minutes late for check in… I'd move it to an earlier flight. But I prefer a long, relaxed coffee in the starbucks after check-in rather than the grey hairs you get as you wonder 'will this line EVER move'?

  • Knowing there are only 2 hours transit time on you return flight from Hong Kong -> KL -> Sydney. Did you fly with AirAsia on your outbound flights (Sydney -> KL -> Hong Kong)? If so, I don't think you can to that without staying for 1 night in KL as you would arrive in KL at about 15:20 or 15:30 while the same day flight from KL to Hong Kong would have long taken off.

  • In 2009 there was no transit at LCCT. You had to go through immigration, not sure if that has changed or not?? But anyway I missed my connecting flight and they booked me on the next flight and i didn't have to pay again. It was the next morning so we slept at the airport, it was OK. There were a lot of people doing it. Otherwise there is a Tune Hotel at the LCCT, you can look it up on their website. Have a great trip!!

    • That Tune is very popular and seems to be booked out a lot.
