Soundbar Recommendations under $1000 for New Sony 65" X90L

Hi all,

Looking for some recommendations for a soundbar for my new X90L. This is the first new TV I've owned in over a decade so I've got absolutely zero knowledge about soundbars.

I know my TV supports eARC so ideally a soundbar that supports that. I'll mostly be using the TV for streaming media from my Plex server and gaming with a PS5.

Subwolfer would be nice to have but not essential, and I have no plans for a surround system that would include rear speakers.

My budget is around $1000, though I could stretch a little.

Wondering what recommendations or experiences people have with setups in this price range.

Subwoofer is definitely essential for a superior movie and gaming experience. Soundbars are already generally weak, don’t miss out on a sub too.

    • This seems to be the consensus, guess I'll update my search to look for soundbars that include a sub.

  • It's a generous allowance, you'll end up with something highly satisfactory. Are you mainly into TV/movies/gaming or do you also listen to music too?

    • This setup will be used exclusively for watching shows and playing games.

      • I agree with @skid, X90L has high-end sound so suggest you try it first before spending more. Reason I asked about music? Soundbars without subs have thin midrange which makes them less than ideal for music. If your dwelling doesn't allow a sub, the other setup I'd recommend is an Apple TV running two HomePods. You get deep-excursion woofers, beamforming tweeters, spatial audio, virtual ATMOS and automated room correction. Sonos Era would be a similar solution but somwehat more expensive. I have both setups in the same space: 5.1.2 with tower mains, HomePods on top of each tower.

  • You can probably get a Sony HT-a5000 for around 1k on sale

Not wanting to sound like a dick, but could test out the TV speakers for a while. You may find the speakers are good enough and they will be the ultimate minimalist style.

    • Solid tip, some people love their inbuilt speakers as I gather they’re ok in some of the higher end TVs

  • I'm no expert, but rtings.com reckons the Samsung HW-Q700A is a good buy for your use case. Article here:

Since your profile indicates you live in Sydney, Appliances Warehouse at Bankstown has factory seconds for $450:

Best price brand new is $659 from Elite Electronics:

    Good luck!

  • The Sony HT A9 gets stunning reviews , way way better than a sound bar. Wait a while and save up. I have the same TV and it's speakers should be OK till you get the money for the A9….
that TV deserves great sound and man your movie experience will be fantastic .

    • I too am intrigued by the HT-A9 (and looking for a pre-owned one), just a bit over OP's $1K budget

      • Yep, definitely over budget but the reward for waiting would be huge. The OP may be keeping the TV for a very long time. I bought the 90f when it first came out and waited…..and waited

  • Im using edifier s3000pro. So far so good, plus you could pair it to you phone via blueetooth connection for music.
