Recommend Me a Compact Camera for $2k

I used to enjoy photography as a hobby but haven't dabbled too much in the past few years. I have a Canon EOS 77D which is a good camera but I don't want to take it out with me due to it's size. I typically use a 50mm prime lens.

I am looking at selling the Canon and getting something smaller/more portable in the hopes i'll be more included to use it. I have seen recommendations online for the Fujifilm X100V as an excellent compact camera. Is it worth the money, or is there something else that is better? Budgeting around $2k, not including whatever I would get for the 77D.

You could get an iPhone Pro or whatever equivalent Android is. It's a camera you'll always have on you. Won't work with extra lenses and won't trigger external strobes, which is kinda dumb in 2024, but you'll always have it on you.

  • New or pre-owned? Any vlogging aspirations? What types of subject matter?

    • Happy with either, no vlogging - just for my own enjoyment. Typically automotive but i'd like to take it travelling so cityscapes etc

For me the joy of cameras (vs phones) is the choice of glass. I think you should go wider than 50mm as 35mm is great for automotive and also for travel images.
        Sony ZV-E10 $900 Sony E 35mm f/1.8 OSS $500
Sony's compact camera line is targetted at vloggers but will be fine for stills if you mainly use auto modes. Maybe visit a store and check one out?

the X100 series isnt very compact and it is a 35mm focal length which might not work for some people (I am one of those who do not favour 35mm). I am quite fond of fuji X trans sensors

The Ricoh GR III (current model) is a 28mm wide and is a camera that is pocketable.
the GRIIIX has a 40mm focal length

Alternatively, there are some phones that have good sensors. flagship phones have almost 1 inch sensor

    • There's compact, and there's tiny.

I carry a DSLR frequently, so the X100V is certainly compact to me (but overpriced atm). GRIII is positively tiny.

I think wider than 35mm would be better for automotive though. The 28mm on the Ricoh would be nice. Get the X as well and you can carry a different focal length in each pocket ;-)

The Sony Rx100 vii is an impressive compact camera. A lot of the same features you will find in a full Sony interchangeable lens cameras. I looked at the Fujifilm X100V before I bought the Sony. I like the X100V too but decided on the Sony for 2 main reasons, the 24-200 lens vs the fixed 35mm in the Fujifilm and the overall size, the Sony is lighter and more compact. The price difference is also another plus for the Sony.

    • Thanks for the recommendation, the Sony looks like a good option

    • +1 for this recommendation. I have the first gen and the images are amazing. Wife runs around with Canon R5 and I have this. I’m very happy with it.

  • X100v might as well wait for next gen, v has been out for so long and been so artificially limited in stock it’s a joke. Also doesn’t have Image stabilisation which imo is required for shooting anything less than decent light…

Might as well get a mirrorless camera if you are looking at things the size and cost of a Fujifilm X100V.
That way you can choose what lens you want instead of being stuck with only one.

    • Exactly. You can get a Fuji APS-C mirrorless body (or Olympus/Panasonic m43, Sony APS-C) for a lot less than the X100V and use the remaining funds to purchase a lens or 2. You will still be ahead cost wise and have a more flexible option.

  • I have a Fujifilm X100s and I love it. I can't be bothered spending the money for an X100v when the S is so similar, I'd suggest you either get the X100V or something used for cheaper like an X100F. I think you'll find they'll be a lot more photography orientated than something like a Canon M50 or a Sony ZV-1 or ZV-E10.
