      Don't have a cow man

Unhappy Cow would be a good name for an app to find your local butcher.

      • -3

        Tasty Cow?

      • +3

Yeah, I don't think the cows are overly happy when you slit their throats.

Why do meat eaters constantly complain about vegan lecturing when they can never keep their own dietary habits and love for bacon to themselves?

      Ps I eat meat.

        • -1

Yes it's carnivore, omnivore and herbivore. No problem with being any. Stupidity though….

        • I'd bet we will once we colonize Mars

          • @ozilicious: Just make sure you keep the bloody Belters under your boot…

        • -5

i do agree that vegan's way of conveying their information is like an imposition. So even though lot of their info is correct but due to their tactics it becomes annoying and repulsive.
it is a cultural problem as people try n impose their views on most topics including political and cultural topocs.

Loser of the week goes to AircraftFreight.

Pretty childish acting like a pork chop.

Already had a login from years ago but no ads with dns server settings. Still a handy app when travelling and eating out.

Excellent app! Always my go-to whenever I am in a new area and need to find somewhere to eat. Being mostly user generated content though, some areas can be a little out of date or lacking in listings for newer places with good options.

An app to help you locate the nearest cheese triangles

  • +2

I want an app that helps me discover free/cheap healthy, vegetarian and vegan food options.
There are plenty of healthy option in local shops these days, you do not need an app, the problem is they are super expensive compared to unhealthily options.

    • +21

You do need an app when you are in a non English speaking country like Japan and want to find vegetarian or vegan food. Happycow quite useful in Japan during our trip.

      • Yes, in that case would be great.

      • Yes in Japan happy cow is very useful

    • +1

there are tons of non blood, bones or flesh; vegetarian and vegan dishes in the world, I don't understand why the restaurants down under don't adapt them here. They are so easy, delicious, healthy and cheap to make.

  • +2

great now i crave happy cow cheese

  • -1

Added a few clients to this app. Didn't do anything to help their business.

    • -3

      Who cares

      • +2

No one, only get a couple reviews each over years they were on there.

        • +1

How many views have the reviews had? That would be a greater metric than just the number of reviews.

          • @DYEL: I don't see anywhere that tells me how many views each got.

            • @AustriaBargain: I use HappyCow all the time, I rarely will post reviews on it though

  • I don’t know anything about this app but I remember “Happy Cow” being an old Smosh bit! 😂😂

  • I dont get it. Do you get free cheese?

  • It's good that they've decided to make the app free for both Android and iOS, but we can actually do search and get the same results on web browsers anyway.

Interesting app name, because without beef eaters there'd be a LOT less cows. Plus, mostly they live pretty well in Australia, free range and well looked after.

Is a relatively good, but short life better than no life at all? Probably not but hard to say. Would you have a child if you knew they'd have an amazing life but pass away 'painlessly' aged 20?

    • +3

Too bad if it turns out to be a male. In that case, they'll probably only live for a week.

Forget about a beef cow living to 20 before ?painlessly? being slaughtered , as it's more like 2 years. Oh, and they don't get to be raised or breastfed by their mother either. Humans need that milk.

      • +2

Oh really, they don't raise male cows / steers for beef? Didn't know.

I was trying to think of an equivilant human comparison lifespan in terms of percentages, but yeah it would be lower. 10-15yrs a more realistic number if that's even a fair way to compare.

I wasn't having an actual dig at vegetarianism, just posing an ethical question. I have heard it said in the past (as an argument against the animal rights perspective) that without the meat industry there would be far fewer domestic animals and therefore less get to have a life, enjoyable or otherwise. I find it an interesting argument because there's no clear counter, so long as the animals live well, which unfortunately in reality isn't always the case.

        • +1

Fair enough, I've also considered the arguments around not being born at all vs living as livestock. Some animals like hens have been bred to lay absurd numbers of eggs leading to health issues (overweight and brittle bones). Mind you, I also think some dog breeds shouldn't exist.

        • +3

          Let me try to counter.

Animal agriculture is resource intensive and provides far less calories per input than most plant based food sources. This inefficiency reduces the output of our food systems overall and has serious impacts on other living systems. Animal agriculture is one of, if not the single largest contributor to global species extinction. The totality of impacts to natural living systems ethically far out weighs the pleasantry of giving a cow a half decent 2 years of existence before the horrors of slaughter. Australia is unique as we have the space to farm cattle without resorting to factory farming, which is a plus. The grains we feed to cattle however could be feeding humans in some other impoverished region, so there is still an net negative impact to the capacity of our food systems.

In impoverished countries this impact is devastating, where cheap food crops are diverted to animal feed, providing meat for the wealthy whilst the poor starve. In those countries it is human lives being lost as a result.

I have friends who are farmers and treat their animals like pets for the most part. However the mothers still wail when their babies are taken away and all of the cows know when they are being taken for slaughter, with a horrifying look of sheer terror in their eyes. It was this alone that turned me off meat personally.

Let me know if that counters the argument?

          • +2

@Goatmon: That's just a different argument, from an environmental perspective. I agree with it. But doesn't directly counter the 'more lives' thing from the animal's perspective.

        • +2

I find this to be an interesting perspective. Realistically if everyone stopped eating cows, they would become near extinct as they are not naturally adapted to any kind of wild environment.

Using your line of thinking though, would you argue that it isn't ethical for a human to not have kids? Of course there is nothing unethical about that in relation to the unborn/non-existent child, however it would be unethical to restrict a human mother from the option of having children. For a cow though, they have no choice about weather or not to have a child, regardless of whether they are farmed or wild. The difference with farm cows is that they could be restricted from ever having calves at the farmers will - whether the cow realises or cares about this is something I don't know if we have evidence for or not.

I would also argue that it's the intention of the birth that makes the difference, not the type of life they live. Realistically the only reason cows are bred is to eventually use them for meat or milk. It's not equivalent to your child living to 20 and then passing away painlessly, but more like have a child for the purpose of them being murdered at a set age to benefit another species, when the murder is biologically unnecessary and is simply because the other species happens to like the taste of your child.
