Solar Invertor and Panel Recommendations

Was researching for 6.6kw system for residential.
Most of the companies came up with below information.

Investors: Fronius, growatt, sungrow, goodwe, Solis

Panels : Jinko Tiger, Raisen, solar edge, Tongwei

Looking at Mid range budget with good performance. .

Thanks in advance

  • I've had Jinko and Growatt for about 4 years now - it's been hassle free and generated a lot of power, generated about 38 MWh.

    • Got 4 Growatt inverters from. 4KwH, 3x 5Kwh. Performs just fine. There is people who have issues. Everyone will have issues if they don't get installed properly.

If people want to install it facing west get Fronius because it has a fan on it.

Fronius, Sungrow, Goodwe are the reputable brands for string inverters (generally in that order). SolarEdge and Enphase for micro inverters (primarily used if you have bad shading). Unless you are very lucky and like gambling avoid Growatt and Solis.

Panels are less important but get a current generation panel backed by a 25yr manufacturer warranty. Budget wise, Jinko N type Tiger Neo are extremely popular. Other reputable but cost effective brands include Longi, Trina, Canadian.

6.6kW is a small system so unless you have done the analysis on your power usage throughout the day/night, peak draw, factor in cloudy days/winter when much less sun etc it may not be adequate. 10-13kW is much more common these days. And if your hot water is electric, have that moved onto being powered by solar via a timer or similar. This is hugely beneficial.

Don't rush a decision. Understand your requirements properly, how much power you use, peak loads, read up on solarquotes website and other sites to empower yourself with basic knowledge.

Also consider if or when in the future you may want a battery. This will determine whether it makes sense to get standard or hybrid battery ready inverter.

Above all else, do not focus on cheapest price. Focus on established reputable installers that you can see their workmanship. This is a 20+year decision. I went through all of this recently over a period of months before getting our system. There are so many dodgy ABN churnining installers out there and others that just cut corners, do ugly ass installs with conduit all over the place etc.

    • nah, growatt is good as, they have same sort of reputation like other Chinese inverter, their range is quite extensive and you can get some decent hybrid inverter to add a battery later on.

      • We can beg to differ.

      • nah, growatt is good as

This is the sort of review I can trust. Yeah, nah, it's good as bruz…

  • currently waiting for my solar to be installed

its best to get lots of quotes with different panels and inverters.
there are multiple factors for solar efficiency too.

its best to sit down, and look at the graphs provided to you. most of the ones i looked at said i'd save roughly 50% on my electric bills.

    I chose 405 or 420w REC panels, with a sungrow 8Kw invertor.
Supposedly, the REC panels are efficient and are bit more expensive. I paired that with a sungrow 8kw inverter which was a little cheaper.

The graphs are automated gibberish. Understand your own power use, dont rely on a salesman. If your only expecting to halve your bill id be going back to the drawing board.

      • Gibberish perhaps, but it is definitely a guide.
Unfortunately, most electric use would be evening use, when the sun has gone.
But to compensate, once you have solar you can change your habits/timers to use high drawing electric products during the day.
By doing this, you will save more than 50%.

  • Solis always been bottom of barrel. Goodwe was crap but seems to have got into people's good books. Growatt seems to have grown a reputation with certain people for being crap.

Suggest finding decent brand that is hybrid (battery read), make sure it isn't locked to a certain brand of battery. Growatt only compatible with their own batteries.

Panels. Jinko and Trina seems to be popular. The actual problem is usually the install (mishandling the panels, mounting them and inverter incorrectly, general dodgy workmanship causing water ingress etc). Read up solar quotes, some of these 25 year performance warranties aren't worth the paper they are written on.

If you compare specification sheets a $2k Fronius is like 0.5% more efficient than a $800 Goodwe. Panels output the same. There is a psychological effect of spending top dollar so you can sleep well at night.

    • There is also psychological effect of dealing with higher failure rates, quality control issues, firmware and customer support. Don't get me wrong, they all have their gremlins and nothing will last forever. But go in eyes open, understand your requirements and inverter features, there is a wealth of lived experiences and customer feedback on forums and social media.

Besides, not all made in china are of the same maturity or reputation, be silly to think it, just like anything made in china, and there are other options.

      • customer feedback on forums and social media.

Only bad news get on forums and social media unless it is paid advertising.

There is also psychological effect of dealing with higher failure rates, quality control issues, firmware and customer support.

In theory nobody engineers high failure rates that will put you out of business. Maybe that is why Australia isn't in the manufacturing business. Mining, agriculture, marginally acceptable construction (we can't outsource it can we) and degrees that have undesirable outcomes but no class action as of yet.

  • I've got a 5kW Goodwe inverter & 5.4kW Jollywood panel combo and it consistently outperforms the 5kW Zever inverter & 6.4kW Jinko panel system on my GFs place.

    I've been pleasantly surprised.
