How many “DJ” here regret selling all their vinyls in the 90s for CDs? I use to have 5 milk grates of them, i can’t believe this old tech is back in again!

[“DJ” - Back in the 80-90s you are a DJ if you if you can play music for backyard parties 😂]

    • Weren't vinyl records like $10 back then?

      • +2

you can find them in bargain bins for like $1 each in those corner second hand book shops back then

      • Back in the 1976 albums were $5.95 and concerts with international artists were usually $6.25 (for example, my wife and I saw Queen on Easter Saturday 1976… still have the tickets and photos). In those days bands toured to sell albums. As my t-shirt proudly proclaims "I may be old but I got to see all the really cool bands".

        • that's the same price as now.. pretty much

          • @darkmoss: Yeah, for ABBA, Billy Joel, Elton John and the like. You can still get good money for the right stuff in near-mint condition. I sold my Beatles White album which I bought in 1970 and it had a low number (they were individually numbered) for $300 two years ago. Part of the attraction for a collector was that it included the full poster which had been "sanitised" in most parts of the world.

            • @cryptowiz: I meant the records still cost the same new now , at the price you mentioned, with inflation, as they did then. Many records coming out today swill still be worth $300+ within 1 - 40 years. Nothing has changed.

              • @darkmoss: You're quite right… sorry for the misunderstanding.

          • @darkmoss: What concert is $6.25 now???

            • +1

              @tight-a55: Adjusted for inflation….about $30-40

            • @tight-a55: really great bands for $40ish dollars still.. if not less.

            • @tight-a55: which part of Australia, I will send you a list if you'd like?

              • @darkmoss: Most concerts I see these days are >$100.

"Really great bands" is subjective. I'm sure you can find some quality live gigs for $40.

If you want to see big names, such as Queen was in the 70's, then you'll be paying a lot more than your stated $40ish

                • @ninnypoop: Queen being good is also subjective.
I think it was $20 to see Michael Hurley last he came to Australia.

$25-$35 for imports, nothing was local

    • +8

My vinyl collection peaked at 3,500 albums by 1982 with the vast majority of those being imports from England, Germany, U.S. and Japan (Australian albums had less vinyl and the sleeves were thinner so it was only Australian artists that I bought locally). In May 1983 I bought a Sony CDP-101 CD player (the first one ever released) and I already had imported 60 CDs from Japan (the only manufacturing facility in the early days). I auctioned much of my vinyl in the late 80s early 90s (mainly rare stuff, picture discs and autographed albums) to feed my CD addiction as I was importing stacks of it from Germany and Japan. I still have 150 favourite albums or ones of great sentimental value. I've pruned my CD collection over the last six years down to around 4,000.

    • +5

Well you could dust yourself off and try again

      • +1

I see what you did there

    • +5

she was in a movie with jet li - weird hip hop music with kung fu but very enjoyable movie. very progressive for its time.

      • -2

I didn't read that part yet, was just reading the crash report because I'm into planes. I just can't believe I'd never heard of her or even how to pronounce that name.. 😅

Definitely going to need to check this movie out though, thanks. At 9 years old, I think I was still listening to Human Nature and Boyzone though so probably why I've never heard of her.

Apparently in her short life she already changed the R&B and Hip-Hop scene..

        • +2

I got a collegue with the same name.. she like to be call Arr lee ah. not A Liar 😂

          • @huu: Yeah wtf, a lot of videos are calling her A-liar, weird! 😅 Mentally I was saying Ah-Lee-Ah too.. I think it's a pretty name if said this way.. 😅

        • +1

R&B definitely, she’s incredible. Hip-Hop, not at all.

          • @TightTerry: I never new but researching the last half hour, I've come to find out she's made songs with Usher and even Timberland.

I even read her best friend was Quiney Jones's daughter and that's why she always avoided 2Pac to not hinder their relationship.. 😅 I missed soo much being a 92' kid..

            • @WasBargain:

I've come to find out she's made songs with Usher

She never made music with Usher.

              • @Lucille Bluth: Damnit, I got caught out with YT shorts. There's a few edits and mashups of them.. 😅 I had to recheck one clip I saw an hour ago.

                • +1

@WasBargain: Yes those are mashups. Although Usher did say in recent years he did want to date her.

Honestly, give her One in a Million album a spin, and then her self/titled ones. You can start of with the self titled one, as it is more modern sounding and has aged really well. She could have released that album today and be fresh sounding.

They only recently became available on Streaming services such as Spotify as her uncle was incredibly greedy with family disputes essentially for the majority of the last 20 years.

                  • +1

@Lucille Bluth: Woah, and the plot thickens..

Very interesting story I should have known a lot earlier! Will definitely give that One in a Million album recommendation a whirl. Hopefully bring back some nostalgic oldschool R&B sound. 😊 Heck, I might even faintly recognise a song or two.

She seemed pretty mature sounding from the random clips I saw of her speaking briefly. Would have been interesting if she got together with Usher. Maybe a still-together power couple today if they had got together.. 😅

          • @TightTerry: She was!

        • +1

She was married to R Kelly at 16

        • +1

Her entourage convinced the pilot to take off overweight. The plane got to 200ft then fell to the ground because you know - carrying too much shit.

          • @MS Paint: Yeah, that's crazy. Heard it was 320kg overweight. And I think that's on top of them already 1 person over the passenger limit for that plane.

The plane they took to the place, wasn't the same plane they tried to return in either. Apparently they had issues trying to start one of the engines on the plane they ended up using AND they inevitably found trace amounts of alcohol and cocaine in the pilots system.

      • +3

Romeo Must Die. Still a much loved movie for me!

        • Weird that after @huu above mentioned it, it came up in my YT recommended. The whole movie is entirely free on YT.

          • +1

@WasBargain: Yeah, but 🏴‍☠️ for better quality though 😏

            • +1

@KangaDrew: Wait, was that a piratebay reference? 😅

              • +1

@WasBargain: TPB is old school. There are a plethora of much better sites to sails the sevens seas on these days.

                Also, yes haha

    • +6

Would have been bigger than Beyoncé

      • You actually reckon? I'm still researching here and there, I wonder if they've ever crossed paths.

I think I only got into R&B and stuff when artists like NE-YO became bigger.. 😅 I was probably a few years out from listening to her stuff.. 😪

      • Not in a million years.

      • 100%

  • +3

    Rip 😢

    • +5

Yep.. :( was quite sad when it happened, she had a bright future

  • +1

Age ain’t nothing but a number is her best

    • +8

The song turns a bit creepy when you learn that she wrote it when she was 15 years old and illegally married a 27 year old R. Kelly.. who is currently in jail for committing child sex crimes..

  • Her 2001 s/t has been repressed recently, and is a way better album for similar money

  • +12

I almost did a double take here to see Aaliyah mentioned on OzBargain.

I was fortunate enough to meet her and her brother Rashad whilst filming in St Albans VIC during filming for Queen of the Damned. Also have her autograph on a concert stub from Germany. Rashad even did vocals on Aussie band's 1200 Techniques – Fork in the Road ended up moving to Melbourne.

    Amazing talent cut short.

One in a Million album is one of my all time favourites, produced by Timbaland. Never Givin Up is a beautiful and so is obviously One in a Million, 4 Page Letter, A Girl Like You, Got to Give It Up (Marvin Gaye sample), The One I Gave My Heart To, Choosey Lover (Isley Brothers sample).

Another tid bit, she was meant to be in Matrix 2 and 3 as Zee but was replaced due to her death, here is some footage.

    • +1

have her autograph on a concert stub

      Does it look like this

      Pretty cool autograph.

      • +3

Yes that is correct, with added "Love + Peace"

    • +1

Timbaland and Missy Elliott for the album - before either of them were particularly famous. Missy E and Aaliyah were close friends after that

    • +3

I didn't know about the Matrix, that's cool. She always looked happy and having fun in behind the scenes footage. I still feel sad that she passed, definitely a bright light extinguished to early. Thanks for sharing.

  • -3

Awesome, I love Guns N Roses, I've never heard of this person or this cover version.

      • Lol

  • Sad loss, her music wasn't my style but respect for her as an artist.
The only one in a million that I acknowledge is Bossons version and that's thanks to Sandra Bullock in miss congeniality <3

  • Does this have the r Kelly remix?
