  • Although it's nice to support a company other than the monopolistic Luxottica group, you're still paying $140 out of the $149 for the brand label here. It costs about $5 to make plastic sunglasses, that's including polarised lenses.

They're now owned by this mob. While still not a part of the should-be-illegal Luxottica group (https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/72fwkp/til_o…) they're now just another big boring Corp.

Not sure who to buy decent sunnies currently.

Maui Jim are decent sunglasses, and if you have scripted lenses, their after sales service is great battery on the value of the lenses. I've had a few frame issues, and they're replaced quite a few frames under warranty when I'm well outside the warranty period

So.. expensive and unreliable? And the only thing saving them is their customer support and willingness to replace the crap parts that break, even outside their irrelevant warranty period? 😅

for sports, consider these independent brands: Rudy Project, Randolph Engineering, Roka, Tifosi

$5 for a good quality product? Where i get one of those?
Even a cup of coffee these days cost more then $5..

Manufacturing cost. There's of course some added costs for a business to run that need to be added on to the retail selling price but people should be aware there's an absolutely ridiculous brand name mark-up on molded polycarbonate.

Most of their lenses arent polycarb…… thats Oakley…. in fact ill say 90% of their lenses if not 99% arent PC… this coming from an industrial insider but i dont work for Maui

How is this difference from any other product from any other recognized brand? An iPhone doesn’t cost $2000 to make. A Rolex doesn’t cost $15k to make. A OLED tv doesn’t cost $3000 to make.

  • Maui Jim used to be good but pricing jumped the shark when they started sponsoring Man U

Serengeti and Bolle now the best remaining players

    • Serengeti is owned by Bolle

  • Are the cancer council sunnies owned by luxotica as well?

    • No they wouldn't be

Those prices are still insane, both for the glasses themselves and the threshold for free shipping. Glasses are so cheap to ship lol.

I tried Tonic sunnies last time, Japanese made, really nice lens and well made. Price is still silly for what they are but Ive enjoyed them.

    That is patently untrue…

    • It's more true than you might think.

This is why you can get Chinese polarised sunglasses delivered to you for $5. It doesn't cost that much to make. Especially with economies of scale as companies like Luxottica pump out millions of the same design to send globally. It's peanuts to manufacture.

  • No deal for me. I think can get cheaper locally
