Hi. What NBN up speed do I need to allow someone to remotely stream moves from my NAS?
I have 20mbps ATM and it's consistently buffering.
Or is the Up Speed not the issue?
NAS is a Synology ds413j and I have 100/20 FTTP.
Thanks

Depends on the file streamed …
A file encoded at 4k @ 50Mbps will require ~ 60Mbps upload to run without stutter …
A file encoded at 720p @ 3Mbps will require less than 5Mbps upload …
Stutter also occurs if NAS is trying to "transcode" a file, NAS CPUs are crap at transcoding …
Stutter also occurs depending on ISP, some crappy ISPs only have inter-connects in one place in Australia (crappy ISPs connect two people in perth via an inter-connect in Sydney only - so if both people in perth on crappy ISPs, the traffic from both go perth > sydney > perth) …
There are a number of factors that could cause buffering, you would have to identify if they are contributing to the issue:
* Bandwidth - Is the bitrate of your file higher than your upload bandwidth?
* Latency - The "distance" to the person streaming. Not much to do here
* Hardware - Is your server or the viewer's device attempting to transcode?
* Software - What service are you using to stream the file? What app is the viewer using?
The CPU in that model of NAS is very weak — all the Synology models ending with a letter "j" are their underpowered ones.
It's not really capable of transcoding video in real time. It will work fine on your home LAN, where it just serves the files to clients in their original format. But it will be hopeless at converting them to serve to remote users via the internet. Your NBN speed isn't going to make a lot of difference.
For decent transcoding performance, you'll need a Synology model ending with a "+", which will have an Intel CPU with onboard GPU that Plex can leverage. Or set up a separate, more powerful device as the Plex server and just use your NAS for basic storage.
Mine is a +, but it’s got a Ryzen V1500. Not the best option for transcoding I hear.
Say you have a 10GB Video file which last 90 mins.
10Gigabyte = 80 Gigabit = 81920 Mbit
81920/90mins/60sec = 15.17 mbps
This doesn't factor overhead nor transcoding, meaning if you stream the actual file without transcoding, in best internet speed scenario. With absolutely no internet packet overhead.
you can do your own math.

Are they forcing a transcode on your NAS? Have a look at the CPU when they are streaming.
I dont think the NAS transcodes.
Can i turn that off/on?
The other end is a Sony Google TV.
Would it help if they used a Media Box of some kind?
I dont think the NAS transcodes.
Plex will try to use the CPU to transcode. So have a look at the CPU usage on the NAS
Can i turn that off/on?
With the correct client/server settings then it won't transcode.
We don't run PLEX.
