Is There Standard Serving Size for Ice Cream?

I wonder if the employees are told what the standard serving size is, because the high and low I experienced were pretty big difference.

Let me show you what I meant:

This was what I called low, chocolate flavour from you know which fast food chain

And this was what I called high, vanilla flavour at a cheaper price from another fast food chain

Definitely ruined my day if I am getting just 2 swirls 😕 but to be fair, surely not expecting 8 swirls everytime, so what's the expected size?

I worked at an ice cream shop as a teenager, and we had to "weigh in" two ice creams at the start of the shift. Each one had to be somewhere between 100gm and 150gm each (although my memory is pretty bad on the exact gms)?

We were also taught to scoop in a swirl so that the scoop looked big, but had an empty hole in the middle, then to cap the hole with a lid of ice cream to hide the hole.

I tried not to do this whenever possible…

For your question, the photo on their website is probably what they are aiming/taught to go for?

    That second one looks ridiculous…

That some sneaky practice…glad that you didn't follow👍

If it's McDonald's or a big chain, I'm sure somewhere in the procedures is a standard serve. But I doubt anyone bothers. I know the better managed McDonald's the manager will look at the amount of soft serve syrup ordered, minus whatever was thrown away, and figure out of the workers are making them too big or not. They count all the other ingredients to figure out what's being wasted or if too many pickles are being put on the burgers.

It makes me sad if I get a small one, hope they can care more!

      • It's not about care. The staff are giving you the right sortof size with the chocolate one. You can compare it to the image linked above to confirm.

Fun memory, I used to frequent Macca's in HK and once I got McFlurry which I deemed too small so I complained and they had a specific scale and they weighted the ice cream in front of the supervisor. The weight was between the lines but they added more goo for me anyways. Since then I always ordered a McFlurry and a cone which I chucked in the cup. And it always amused the staff :D

So they do have a standard size! But as far as I know, Macca's in Asia countries like Japan their sizes are smaller comparing to the western.

      • Yes can attest that asians are of smaller size than western or african counterparts

Whoever made the high one is either a friend or relative of yours. ;)

Each store is different and I am sure they have minimum 'swirl' count but McDonalds is a hit and miss. It all depends on the person who is doing your cone, for example, I got a small swirl vs another day I got a big fat swirl……

Just depends. Back in the service queue in mcdonalds, if I am ordering a soft serve, I would always go to the biggest person serving as they tend to give out the biggest serving.

    • Nice trick! Let me try it next time: I want that nice person over there to do my🍦

  • On average mine have always been bigger at HJ

    • +1

HJ soft serve is usually firmer so it can be stacked high. Maccas is usually runny so no choice but to stack low.

Oh and HJ is only 80c. Maccas is $1.10. You pay more for less quality.

    • Same here!

      also, the burgers are bigger….
      (apparently)

(I think they mean the price tag)

HJs do tend to make things bigger.

When I worked at Maccas we were taught to do a standard soft serve - which I think was 3.5 swirls.

    • Really? Is it above the cone or in total? Cause if the icecream sinks inside, it really looks like there are just 2 swirls above.

      • It was a while ago, but I think it was only on top. Leave a hole in bottom and middle.

  • you scream i scream we all scream for ice cream

  • Wait till you meet the soup Nazi

Most fast food servings are smaller than you think. Every time they're bigger, they're doing you a favour. Every time you complain like this, you increase the likelihood of a crackdown resulting in smaller ice creams for all. Be nice to staff and stfu
